Mr Thompsons Finest brake third - Part I and the first loco

Modelling has been slow of late as work and life intrude into modelling time. In order to get some stock ready for the final track laying (and to have something to play with! :senile: ) a start has been made on the etched pixels Thompson brake third kit received for Christmas.

Kit contents:-

As can be seen the kit is a combination of etched sides and 3d printed body which should make for an easy build.

Progress after a couple of hours of modelling:-

Having carefully soldered and cleaned the door vents I now realise these should flat fronted, so a dose of filler is in order prior to paint.

The rainstrip looks a little heavy, although these appear surprisingly thick in photographs, whilst pondering whether to redo these I came across this photo (http://www.flickr.com/photos/irishswissernie/5742932663/in/set-72157626647363095/) and realised I had the profile wrong anyway, this made the decision easy so off they came! A trip to Eileen’s Emporium at Stafford last weekend sourced some smaller profile styrene section which should do the trick.

I’ve also taken delivery of the replacement wheels, the original Dapol units supplied are surprisingly undersize, the photo below shows the comparison. I was contemplating sending the originals off for re-profiling as Dapol use a split axle to transfer track power to the bogie to enable coach lighting, given the discrepancy in wheel size though I’ve decided to use the replacement wheels.

Unfortunately after two attempt I keep getting sent the wrong axle lengths so cannot assemble the bogies with the 2mm wheels yet :umbrage:

Handrail caused an initial problem as I couldn’t find a fine enough wire. Stripped and unbraided layout wire was trialled on the guards compartment:-

But this is too flexible; Eileen’s Emporium again provided the solution in the form of 0.3mm wire.

Finally the paying public have been purchased are ready to be painted and installed, I am still looking for details of the interior décor of these coaches any information would be gratefully received.

The first locomotive has also made and appearance :danced: :-

The photo was taken during its running in turn so it’s off with the wheels for re-profiling (via the 2mm society, I don’t possess a lathe, or the skill to use one). I still have to decide her final identity and look at what detailing to add, that said, the Dapol original looks pretty good already. Headcode will need changing, most of the photos of these engines on the Oban line have a single digit, usually "9" showing.

and pulling a couple of wagons, both part completed conversions using TPM kits not intended for this layout.

One head scratcher for the future is the difference in coupling heights between the Micro-trains couplers and the Dapol couplers (which are too long anyway):-

Another mad week awaits so the modelling table will have to wait awile....

I'll be interested to see how the coach works out as this new breed of multi-media kits look to be a positive advance that may even encourage me to build some coaches. No promises mind!

On the handrail wire you can buy straight lengths of 0.2mm nickel silver rod (aka wire) from Albion Alloys:

http://www.albionalloys.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/Complete-Range-Metals-Brochure-4pp-Print-low-res-3.pdf

In 2mm scale it is better to use the smaller diameter wire as paint will add disproportionately to the thickness. Also remember to slip a piece of thin card or paper between the handrail and the body when soldering to preserve a gap between them.

On the coupling question, I would stick with DG Couplings. Any auto-couplings in 2mm scale are a bit offensive due to the size but when DGs are blackened they do recede from view somewhat. If you can keep your curve radii above 21" ('officially' it should be 24") by, for example, using nothing less than 1:6 turnouts you will find that for most diesel locos you can mount the couplings on the buffer beam. You can then cut off the mounting box on the bogie and fit most of the pipe work that enhances the front end of diesels. All my Class 24s, 73s and 33 have the couplings mounted like this and never give any trouble propelling stock through crossovers.

Nice work. Look forward to seeing more progress. I particularly like the work on your 2 cement tanks. What colour grey have you used to paint the vee-tank?

Thanks Dave for the link re: wire. I also agree with the use of DGs, although I never thought of attaching them directly to the body?! Interesting though.

Watch the height using the larger wheels. I re-wheeled some Dapol coaches with 7mm coach wheels and they now sit noticeably high next to everything. The etched pixels coach might be designed to match the smaller wheel size?

They are indeed designed to match the bogies but if you are careful you should be able to file down the mount slightly, taking care your flanges still clear the coach floor.

I look forward to the day I can put the rainstrips on the roof in the 3D print - but right now the rainstrips are right on the limit of the material and combined with polishing get a bit unpredictable to say the least so for now they have to be added by hand.

David,

thanks for the link to Albion metals, I nearly bought some at the Stafford show but the price seemed a bit steep (my 50% Yorkshire, 50% Scottish genes prevent that sort of squander), I'll have a go with the slightly thicker wire and see. I am intending to stick with Micro-trains couplers as I find them very effective, no more intrusive than other aftermarket couplers, the picture shows them on 9" radius curves so normal 2mm radii are not a problem, and most of important of all (see above!), I've got a large selection in stock following a sojourn into the world of modelling Canadian Railways.

Robbo,

Apologies for the delay in replying, only the Vee tank is painted and, I think (it was a while ago) it's painted Railmatch Freight grey, I may have darkened the grey slightly with a dab of black though, I seem to remember the unadulterated paint looked too pale. The PCA was (is?) to be a model of the RMC lime tanks seen at Peek Forest (http://www.flickr.com/photos/blue-diesels/5946253822/in/set-72157604138184474) so will be gloss orange, there is still some additional pipework to add though.

Rich and Etched, Thanks for the tip on the buffer height, I suspected that would be the case.
