This week saw the 150th Anniversary of the coming of the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway and Midland Railway to Marple.

As part of the events in Marple this week the Marple Locks Festival is to be held again on Sunday 5th July 2015.

One of the regular stars of the Festival is the MS&LR horse-drawn canal boat 'Maria'. She was built at Marple Locks in 1853 and used by the MS&LR for transporting stone from Derbyshire, later becoming a canal maintenance boat for the GCR, LNER and British Waterways. After being abandoned at Ashton-under-Lyne in 1961, she was acquired by the Peak Forest Canal Society in 1972. Following service as an excursion boat she was restored to near original condition in 2000 and now carries MS&LR livery.

She travelled to Marple today and will be at the top of Marple Locks on Saturday and Sunday, returning down the flight at the end of the festival on Sunday afternoon.
