Goathland Photos

Recommended Posts

This lot is for Whitby50G who asked for a collection of photos of various bits of Goathland, but to start with I have included some detail shots of an LNER disc signal because I remember someone asking for some ages ago.

Next are a number of shots of Cowath bridge as requested, don't forget though that the railings on the south side are a 1970s addition to improve visibility for road users, originally both parapets would have matched. I have also included the shot of the hoe put in by a lunatic to show the road level in relation to the parapet, it being a good 16 inches lower originally than today.

Now on to the stone crusher, firstly the building itself and the belt guides in the undergrowth - the LNER window frame and the bits of old wagon body are a preservation addition.

An inspection platform was cut into the bankside along the top of the retaining wall, accessed by the stone steps

Two photographs of the weighbridge building (which is vintage NER) which would have weighed loaded wagons

This is the remains of what we surmise is some kind of inspection rampway to get above loaded wagons, recently collapsed to reveal an unknown earlier structure behind.

This is the remains of the chute down which the crushed whinstone would come, landing in the waiting wagon below, part of one of the steel chute walls can be seen still standing on the right of the picture. There was also a chute for uncrushed whinstone somewhere on the site, but it is so overgrown we are unsure exactly where and nobody has been brave enough to climb up and see yet.

Finally two shots of the Pelton turbine which drove the stone crusher, and yes, it does still work as I had it running over the winter after some heavy rain.

Boris very kindly posted a few shots of the inside of the signal cabin  on page1 of my thread back in 2010 when I started the project. I lost contact with RMweb as we had to move and didn't get internet coverage for about a year. We built our model working from about two dozen images we saved which explians why we got many details wrong!

When I get the layout back I have many plans and boxes full of details!
