Shawbury BR 1987-91ish in N gauge

My layout is based on the Shrewsbury area in the late 80's.

After a house move i dismantled my previous layout called Oswestry Junction, also based on same theme & as i now have less room, ive had to compromise on how to build my layout.

I've decided on a terminus instead of a through station with 5 platforms, 3 long enough to accomodate 7 coaches plus a loco, & 2 bay platforms long enough to accomodate 5 car dmu's. The station is on a higher lever while below is a continuous oval (as i like to see trains running continuous) & a fiddle yard at the rear.

The passanger trains are:

London Euston - Shawbury InterCity services, Cardiff - Manchester/Liverpool services either loco hauled or class 156 operated, Birmingham to Chester/Aberystwyth, the later exclusivley operated by Class 150 'Sprinter's as well as the daily through Cambrian Coast Express InterCity service from Euston. There are also local services to Crewe & also Stafford via Newport Shropshire (yes modellers licence saying the line remained open)

All services have to reverse in the station.

The layout is Not DCC, just operated through a normal DC controller, though i do have dead sections of track in the platforms & sidings to allow attaching/detatching units.

Here's a few pictures of my progress so far.....

Excellent work there, I liked your last layout but this one looks like it is already just as good. I like the location and especially that you have kept the Wellington to Stafford line open.

Is the continuous run going to be used for any purpose i.e. a freight line separate to the main lines into the station?

Keep up the good work.

Looking good, good size as well.

Cheers for that Richard :)

Thanks for that stephen, yes ive moved to Stafford ;) ....hence why ive kept the line open lol

The continuous run ive kept for whenever i need to run a loco in...but as it stands on the layout, just as a freight only line. This is my 1st attempt at a 2 level layout, so quiet pleased with the results :)

Love the look of this layout, particulaly like the way the trains pass through the stabling yard before entering the station so that it gives an enclosed city feeling.

Are the platforms a kit, or scrathbuilt.

ATB

Nik

Cheers Nik,

The platforms are from Metcalf Platform kits, i prefer to use them as they're solid once constructed & you can cut them to any shape. Glad you like the layout :)

Hi Mark

Great layout - I especially like the canopies over the platforms, as they still allow you to see underneath.

Keep up the good work

Cheers

Phil

Hi Phil,

Cheers for that & glad you like it  . I designed the canopies baring in mind i want views of the trains from a few angles.

Hoping to get some more done this week to the layout before my late shifts, there's a good chance if this rain keeps up!

Your layout is looking great too by the way B)

Hi Guys,

I've completed the station building today by adding turrets to the clock tower. Ive done this by chopping up 4 pencils then painting them

Pretty pleasing results.

Here's some pics of the layout so far....

I will add i've been considering basing my layout a little further north in the Chester area, & re-naming it Chester Northgate, if i did this i would imagine Chester 'General' to be the station for Merseyrail services, with all other services re routed to Northgate such as North wales coast etc & having to reverse....Still having a ponder on it

Relocating to Chester would give you the opportunity to model some 3rd rail electrics. It could spice things up a bit (not that they need spicing up!). Electra graphics were going to produce a kit that could be adapted (the class 313, not sure what is going on with it but info can be seen here http://www.warr.biz/erg/313.htm ).

I like the inventive use of pencils there it really gives the station a very grand look to it.

Keep up the good work!

I'm undecided as to what to do yet, but if i do, i was thinking of a fictional Chester Northgate, with all Manchester/Crewe/Euston - North wales/Shrewsbury services diverted to there. I think the electics started just out of my period so i'd prob use DMU's if thats where i decide on. I'm looking forward to aquiring a couple of the fab looking class 101's when they come out & maybe a Dapol Pacer

Is it just me or are you missing a means for incoming trains to cross over to the lines fed in from the down line? Seems like where you have the crossover to allow departing traffic to cross to the downline, you need a similar set of points to cross traffic onto the downside platforms. I think you could fit it in without too much fiddling. Have the leading cross over starting just beyond the point to the stabling point. Then the point to the stabling point - which would move down a little but a short piece of track should solve that, then the existing trailing crossover after.

Hi Katier,

I have a crossover just after the fiddle yard & before the start of the incline for access to the 'down' Platforms at the moment. The straight section of track before the stabling sidings isn't quiet long enough to fit in a crossover there as there is then a short curve, (even with set track points). I'm going to see how i feel after ive completed more scenic work & before i attemp to ballast but for me at the minute, the current track plan works pretty well :)

As others have commented, the canopies are great, very neat and functional. Great idea, too, using pencils as pinnacles - sharp thinking!

Steve.

Cheers Steve :)

The canopies i designed with wanting an unobscured view of the trains in mind, pretty pleased with them  & glad you like the pencil idea lol! B)

Lol. I ruled out the use of stationary objects...

Looking nice so far.

Thanks devondynosour,

its taking shape now thankfully :)

Good to see this layout keep improving really like the high level signal box overseeing everything.

What are the dimensions of this layout, just asking as planning a terminus and this looks a good size and seems to contain most of the features/ train lengths i'm trying to include, although i do need a parcels depot as an excuse to get some of the great looking GF TPO's.

Keep up the good work

Nik

Hi Nik,

Thanks very much :) . The signal box is off a previous layout but is in need of a bit of a makeover, hence i havn't taken any close up pictures of it. The whole length of the layout is 9 feet. The station area is 1' wide, while the lower section is 2' wide including the fiddle yard at the rear. I have 1 GF TPO & they really are great, make my older RES MK1 stock look pretty dated. I'll look forward to seeing your layout on here when you get round to it :pleasantry:

All the best

Well due to me not being too well & having to stay off work, its given me chance to work on the layout, populate the platforms & just generally tidy up the layout in readiness to start the dreaded ballasting at some point soon....

A shot of the holding sidings on the station approaches with a variety of Sprinter units & a stabled class 47 on the left. I'm yet to tidy up the signal box as it is off previous layouts & looks very 'tired' (apologies for the blurriness of this picture)
