RMweb Gold Gilbert Posted May 26, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 26, 2011 I'd like to have a model of a cement silo on my layout but I model mid 60s and wondered if it would be a bit early for one. I'm thinking about the vertical towers as featured in the MRJ Compendium #1 article "The Bucolic Silo" (at Barnstaple) and as seen at places like Avon Street and Lawrence Hill in Bristol or Beeston near Nottingham. Thanks Chris
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted May 26, 2011 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 26, 2011 Do you mean something like this one at Beeston I took from a dmu in 1969? David

Fat Controller
They would have arrived sometime in the 1950s- the first Presflo wagon was deliverd in June 1954, with large numbers being delivered from 1955 onwards.
Bartb
Hi Gilbert you mentioned Lawrence Hill, I took some pictures there in the late 80's. Here is a photo of the silos, hope this is of help. John
RMweb Gold Gilbert Posted May 31, 2011 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted May 31, 2011 John Thanks - useful photo - I'm forming the view I can use this sort of silo for late 60's onwards but without the side skirts which seem to be a later addition. jcb 3c
Dunno wether this is any good because it's from 1983 but Silos may be much earlier , from Free Photo site, http://www.free-photos.biz/search/ These cement silo sidings seem to be long term survivors there is still one in Middlesbrough no longer served by rail though. jcb 3c
Hi Gilbert , I should have put the location in it's Northenden , if you do google image search 'Blue Circle Cement Northenden' theres a few images , it still appears to be on the go with more modern silos. Also realised its featured on this website about all kinds of goods facilities, which confirms pictured silos are early ones - http://www.igg.org.uk/gansg/12-linind/cement.htm
