Here are the beginnings of my new 3mm scale micro layout. First a quick sketch and an artists's impression (using the term loosely), then a picture of the first track lay, just to try things for size. The idea is to represent part of a West Riding station and goods sidings in the late 60s.

There will be a DMU passenger line at the top, possibly raised on top of a retaining wall, with just a hint of one platform to suggest a bigger station out of view.

I may just model part of the warehouse and/or factory, again suggesting that there is more off-scene.

There will be a fiddle yard at the right, with three or four tracks.

It won’t be particularly finescale (I have some Tri-ang to run, after all, not to mention my own naff kit-built locos), but I aim to try and make it a nice presentation piece, with integral backscene.

I’m not sure whether to make the passenger line high level. There were a few prototypes for this, and it might add a bit of interest, but it looks a bit contrived to me. Any ideas?

HI , UK is never totally flat unlike many model display so a suggestion of differing levels always good , It might be better if you suggested lines met off scene so dnu climbed into station on gentle rise with only last 100mm flat. Great idea and look forward to watching progress - unlike my armchair efforts. As written in the snug of the " The Pedant and armchair"!!

Nealy a year gone by and nothing done! (Apart from taking the map pins out of the tracks). But it's all wired up and ready to go. I've re-transfered and re-brushed the Jinty and overhauled the other Tri-ang locos and they all run run well. I particularly like the re-liveried DMU, which I bought off ebay. In fact, they all look better than my kit-built efforts!
