jpachl
I started building a new TT scale diorama for display on the modell-hobby-spiel fair on 03-06 October 2013 in Leipzig, Germany. It shows a fictitious scene in New York City with a closed firehouse beside a rail yard. While not having a real prototype, there are several places in NYC that had that kind of athmosphere in the 1950s/60s, e.g., the area around former 30th street yard. The first attached picture shows the background picture I made from modified cutouts of seven different photos of NYC. This way, I created a picture showing a typical NYC scene that never existed in reality. On the left side, there is the firehouse placed in front of the background picture. On the right side, in front of the grey industrial building, the yard tracks and facilities will appear. The grey building is printed on the background but will be replaced by a half-relief structure. The second picture shows a first test arrangement of some models on a naked base board in front of the background picture. It already provides a good imagination of how the diorama might finally look like. Left of the bumpers, there will be a wall to separate the yard area from public space. Along the front side of the base board, there runs a street, which is not shown on the diorama. The modelled area will more or less end at the curb. The diorama will be displayed on the stand of German US TT scale manufacturer Lok-N-Roll, probably with some rolling stock of that manufacturer on the yard tracks. Taigatrommel
Hi Joern, Nice to see another TTnutter here. I hope I'm going to make ModellHobbySpiel this year, so fingers crossed I'll see this! Cheers Rich B
jpachl
Hi Rich, That's really nice! Always thought, I'm the only TTnutter on RMWeb. Would be very nice to meet you in Leipzig. I will be there on 4th and 5th October. Regards, Joern
rodshaw
Nice to see some US TT modelling. Pity it's not widely available, particularly in the UK. Are there any more of you out there?
jpachl
Are there any more of you out there? In Germany, there is a small but growing US TT scene. The leading German forum is the US TT thread at http://www.tt-board.de/forum/showthread.php?t=23698. Most of the members are also active users in the English language forum http://www.ttnut.com/ US TT models come from just a few small batch manufacturers. The leading vendor in Germany is the Leipzig based online shop Lok-N-Roll: http://www.lok-n-roll.de/9.html. There are also some US TT manufacturers in Eastern Europe, e.g.; Ukrainian manufacturer RailTT: http://railtt.ucoz.ua/news/1-0-1, which is famous for excellent US TT road vehicles. Due to the limited availability of models it's still difficult to build a big layout. However, you will find enough stuff to make small layouts and dioramas. jpachl
Here is a short update. I used the last days to do most of the modelling. While many details are still missing, most of the job has been done. Here are some photos of the current state. Even with a holiday break of three weeks, it will be no problem to finish the diorama on time for the exhibition.Joern
jpachl
The diorama is now finished. A set of photos, you find in a Flickr album at http://www.flickr.com/photos/jpachl/sets/72157634975866844/ Joern

shortliner
Very nice, Joern = Stefan has some great retro-art - which poster did you use for the side of the building?
jpachl
Very nice, Joern = Stefan has some great retro-art - which poster did you use for the side of the building? To avoid an copyright issue, I just used the slogan 'Diesel City', which is the title of Stefan's main work: http://www.dieselcity.fr For the poster, I modified an older advertising picture for a completely different product. However, Stefan likes it and granted me permission to use any of his artwork for free in my future modelling projects. Joern
