We're not dead yet!
To be honest, the lack of a newsletter is due to... well.. lack of news. That and a very hectic schedule here.
We're proceeding with several project already announced, but both we and our partners have decided that it would be best to hold off on any new announcements until we all see what impact current going-on in the Brexit situation will have. However, we do plan to continue, so you haven;t heard the last of us. (Sorry...) :>)

Mine did it in a couple of places but it was the track not the dynamometer carraige. Any slight drop in track level and it will derail. Once i adjusted the track level it is running fine.
You might also try loosening the screws slightly to allow a little more motion. The factory will sometimes cinch them down just a bit too tight....

Careful you will have Jason Shron from Rapido himself posting directly on this thread for polluting a Rapido model thread with mis-conceived ideas about Doctor Who! He might turn you into a DCC controlled cyber man using a Stirling's sound chip.
The Single's sound chip won't work for this. He has a special one though... ;>)

Over the last several days Adam and Oliver at Rails have been diligently searching for information that will either verify or refute our decision regarding lining - or the lack of it - on the Dynamometer car. Yesterday they provided me final and - I think all will agree - irrefutable proof that our decision was correct. The discussion can stop now.

Now a question - getting away from the lining issue!
When in use, did the vehicle have to be a particular way round? In other words, if doing a recording southbound, did it have to be turned before returning north (assuming another recording being done),
Stewart
The recording gear inside all seems to be oriented towards and connected to the drawbar at the same end of the car as the instrument room (the one with the ducket fitted in later years). Additionally the plugs for the instrumentation were on that end only. So - I'm going to venture a guess (HORRORS!) that yes - that end would always be towards the loco during a test.

Are there no written records archived anywhere? Presumably the painters in the carriage factory had some sort of design / instructions / diagram to follow to know what lining they were or weren't painting ...?
Stay off of the forum for a few days and look what happens...!
Throughout the research on this project we both corresponded with and visited the NRM, met with the conservation people there several times and corresponded with several LNER experts on the issue of livery - specifically the lining (or lack thereof). While we could find no definitive information that exactly indicated the livery in 1938, we did find a large amount of circumstantial evidence that guided the livery choices on the models.
- What everybody seems to be in agreement with (even on this forum!) is that between 1938 and 1948 the car received no major repainting with the exception of the number change.
- The conservation experts at NRM that we consulted with indicated the car was restored into the livery that it was retired in and NRM documentation seems to support this.
So - working backwards, if we assume that the car has no lining now (It doesn't) and that the NRM was diligent in the restoration (they seem to have been) and that the car was not repainted significantly during the war years (as shop records indicate), then it would follow that the vehicle was not lined in 1938.
Further, it is my understanding (and I'm sure that I will be corrected!) that LNER post-1928 or so did not line secondary or non-passenger carrying stock.
We were NOT able to find any livery diagrams that covered this car specifically so had to base our livery decisions on the information we were presented with - which concluded that for one of a few possible reasons the vehicle would not have been lined in 1938. Vintage colour photos on Steve Bank's web site - https://www.steve-banks.org/prototype-and-traffic/133-teak-coaches (scroll down about half way) seem to support a lack of lining.
The photos posted from the Pathe film are clearly from a period before the car was re-shopped as they feature the earlier bogies and no gangway connections. As such, they are not really relevant to either the 1938 or 1948 appearance of the vehicle.
I will now crawl into my bunker and await incoming rounds....!

Have you SEEN the Hornby 8 May announcement thread.... RMWeb = reading way too much into everything.
OK, so we are under on the batch size....
Not trying to be coy, but it's not my place to announce Locomotion's production numbers. I'll let them do that if they wish.
As for the Hornby thread - Seen the thread? Yes. Read any of it? I'll just wait for their announcement. To be perfectly honest I'm up to my eyeballs in making our own models, commission and otherwise, including at least
three..four,,, .errr.... make thatsix.... seven.... I mean.......... never mind... that have not been announced yet.Read what you want into that ;>)

Please tell me your making 10,000. . . .I might be able to get a 3rd one !
Just three?
-
I noted 40 per bin and approx 40 bins which gives 1600 for a production run.
I was informed a while ago that Heljan production runs are 2000, so having a run of between 1500-2000 would seem about right for such a niche loco.
You're reading WAY too much into this by assuming that I photographed all the bins.... :>)

Greetings from lovely (?!) downtown Donguan, China!
I'me here on one of Rapido's quarterly China trips to work with the factories on upcoming and current projects. As it happens, there are a few of our UK projects underway while I am here - one of particular interest to this thread - so I thought that I would share some photos of Stirling Single production that I've taken over the last few days.
This production line is working on Single tenders.
All of the Single chassis have been assembled and are being tested. They are stored in blue bins awaiting final assembly.
There are lots of them!
Every chassis undergoes a QC test to ensure that they operate to specification. This is probably one of the most exciting jobs in the factory. Ahem....Likewise, every tender is attached to a running chassis to check all the wiring connections. While we all are anxiously awaiting our models, you can just sense the excitement that this supervisor will feel when she sees the last one LEAVE!
On the other side of the table every decoder is tested ahead of adding the tender shell. This woman's testing routine included blowing the whistle to check the speaker connections. I've been here three days and am already tired of hearing peanut whistles!Once she is done testing the chassis they move to the final assembly steps. This involves adding the body, railings and coal load. I'm afraid that the woman on the right has given away our secret factory location. Don't tell anybody....A few finished tenders awaiting the arrival of the dreaded Blue Bins. So, you ask, where does all this leave us who are waiting SO patiently? The assembly workers are working today (Sunday) to get the final tenders finished. As I mentioned, all of the chassis have been assembled. All of the remaining parts have been painted and decorated. The plan is to start final assembly on Monday, with the finished models going directly into packaging for shipping. It will likely take a little more than a week or so for this to be complete. I'm hoping to be able to watch them load the container before I leave. I may even offer to help! So, the model IS coming - and soon! Thank all of you who have pre-ordered for your patience and support. For those who have not pre-ordered - what are you waiting for? ;>)Now, off to the other factory which is working on another project! Updates next week on another thread!Bill- 30

Ever wondered what goes into creating perfection?
Take a look at the parts sheet of our eagerly awaited Dynamometer Car:
Screen Shot 2018-05-04 at 16.15.09.png
... and that's the easy part! Nearly every interior part has some level of decoration, from paint (several colours) to printed decoration (I don't want to count how many colours!). I've said before, there is more decoration INSIDE this model than on most goods wagons!

It will be good exercise on the way home.... ;>)

I just can't take my eyes off the platform brickwork - all of a sudden just a plain brick wall will no longer do.....
My gast is continually flabbered by this layout. I have never seen so much character and great modelling in one place. I never even consider the gauge, or Peco track, or it's GWRness (sorry!) - it just all melds together.
Hey hey HEY!!! What's wrong with it's "GWRness"?!
It is truly amazing work....

Cats and pigeons unite!
Greetings from Rapido Galactic Headquarters in Toronto! I've come up from Connecticut for the week to review vaious projects and meet with the guys from the Platelayers Society about the upcoming Great British Train Show.
So, there has been some good progress on the teak livery. The sample that John posted above was the previous iteration. We have yet more recent sample sitting n my desk. At home. Some ten hours' drive away. You'll understand I hope if I don't just run down and get it until Friday night...
The resolution on the plates for the woodgrain effect is now to a point where we are quite happy with it. The colours need a slight adjustment for a bit more contrast which we will do before starting production of the bodies. That's a relatively small change. Unfortunately, we are now at that time where the entire country of China essentially shuts down for a month for Chinese New Year, so we won't likely see further samples until the beginning of March.
I WILL take some photos of the most recent samples on the weekend... assuming that I don't get snowed in up here - It has happened before!

Can anyone tell us where the space for a speaker is located please? I know nothing about LNER steam, but if I fit a sound decoder which sound would be most suitable, thanks?
A cavity has been provided in the chassis weight that will fit a sugarcube speaker. That's about ALL that would fit!

Just to make sure you get the green exactly right, it was described as "green of one shade or another"; "bright, almost grass green"; "green"; "light grass-green"; "slightly yellower green than [a colour previously described as green]" or "bright green".
I hope that's clear.
We have a chip. ;>)
-
No you are supposed to reply "What? Your mean to say the that Stirling single is NOT GWR? But its domeless....."
Of course I know it's not GWR - the green is wrong....

If this is as good as it looks, gets rave review (model of the year?) and sells by the bucket load (even to people who don't model for it) could we see another single being released?
Rapido will obviously have the knowledge.
GWR Single maybe.....
And don't say Hornby have done one, it's crap.
I'm still recovering from this one! ;>)

Thanks for posting those lovely images. Very glad I ordered this, it looks really super - and no - I don't begrudge a penny as long as it runs as well as it looks. Hard to easily fault - bearing in mind they still have some tweaks to do. A pet hate of mine is painted 'brass' safety-bonnets, they never look right. At least one can dull-down a plated one.
A couple of queries for the experts here;-
- Is the wobbliness of the tender coal-rails deliberate/prototypical...?
- Are the two tenders shown simply to illustrate a removable coal-load...?
- Does anyone know from where they are taking the sounds for the Soundfile...?
- Any updates on expected delivery dates...?
This looks every inch worth the wait anyway....!
Guess I should take this one... ;>)
- The coal rails were knocked loose through a combination of rough handling at the show and insufficient glue from the factory. It's on our list of things to fix for production.
- Yes, the model will come with two coal loads so we were trying to illustrate both.
- The Single ran in the 1980s and there are several videos of it doing so. While the sound on the videos is not high enough quality to use on its own, it did give us a place to start. With the help of Matt from ESU America we pieced together a sound file from various other recordings that closely matched what we were hearing on the videos. The NRM staff were sent a copy of the file and were quite happy with it based on their recollections.
- We're just starting the production process now, so we're still a few months away from delivery. We will send updates as things move along.

This one man speculation about Rapido's future plans, put forward here with no evidence means absolutely nothing to me. I await Rapido Bill's comment before believing anything.
Oh, I'm enjoying it....

Model Rail announce GWR Class 1600 0-6-0PT via Rapido
in Rapido Trains
Posted
Man, and this was my day off too Chris.....
The 16xx uses a conventional skew wound 5-pole can motor with flywheel. A screen shot of the CAD file, less boiler and weight, is attached to illustrate.
Can I go back to playing with my own trains now?
