  1. Interesting, sounds expensive though. Isnt the Bachman N-class difficult to take apart?

    Dave.

It is tedious rather than difficult. The trick is knowing which screws to remove and where to relieve the metal when replacing the footplate casting. The casting are freely (literally) from Bachmann in exchange for an email.

Would it be easier to use the DJH tender?

It occurs to me that you might like this to complement Bill's main station building. It is a standard Yeovil and Exeter design, and was built a number of years ago for a loft layout of Chard Junction, and situated in Beaminster.

I seemed to have completely missed this post or at least responding to the kind offer, in short, I would be honoured to use such an evocative building on Beaminster Road.

Just send a pm for further contact

The grass tends to look rather too uniform, therefore a quick blast with Sainsgogs cheapo hairspray followed by a sprinkling of Heki winter grass with a layer of WS blended grass seems to have done the trick.

This will be applied where the bank meets the cess and the lineside vegetation would have been more parched.

  4. Thanks for that, might try making some. Static grass looks really good too.

No problem, I aim to help, whenever I am asked

As a postscript, I am constantly amazed by the good natured tenacity of Southern modellers who make do with so little and the quality of the excellent layouts built with such a small range of available products is simply amazing.

  5. Unfortunately,

there is no room for the greenhouse on Beaminster Road consequently I was contemplating using it as a replacement for the raiway cottage that I used to show when demonstrating. Otherwise it will find a home with another layout, hopefully, on RMweb or to be sold on Ebay.

Meanwhile I have to create a typical wall that has been colonised by Red Valerian*, this will be familiar to anyone who really knows West Dorset and South Somerset.

The Wills greenhouse is a nice old model, goes together without problems except the interior is empty, rather than paint the glass white (keeps the sun off the veg) here are some pot plants for the station (and Mrs. Station Master)

Most are no more than 8mm high, I wish that I had included a matchhead for a comparison but they are nice.

  7. Dave,

You may want to access The Locomotive History of the South Eastern & Chatham Railway by Don Bradley, which details the various changes to frames and chimneys. Slightly less complex are the tender changes to the U-boats. All the new boats had 4000 gall tenders by 3/39 but after the war some were fitted with 3500 gall tenders:

    31610 - 3/53 to 6/57

    31613 - 9/47 to 8/62

    31616 - 10/57

    31618 - 2/44

    31619 - 5/46

    31625 - 12/47

    31629 - 10/47

    31638 - 10/47

The last six to withdrawal, and (3)1618 is preserved with a 3500 gall tender on the Bluebell Railway.

    Bill

    Bill,

31613* was seen on M&SWJR on 14th March '61 and there is a different photo of 31613 at Southampton coupled to the larger tender whilst 31610 seems to have been fitted with the smaller tender until 1961, unless two separate images of the loco in '60 are incorrectly dated.

However many thanks for the information, the model is intended for Beaminster Road and hopefully will depict an example based in the area - 31610 was a long term Exmouth lass.

  8. Jeremy,

A bit like this except a wee bit smaller and the wonky handrail and window bars straightened?

This is awaiting lettering (there is also a Finney 1401 awaiting a similar fate) before earning its keep on Beaminster Road.

Don't forget the invite for a running session.

  9. And the goods yard is coming along nicely-

    IMG_0150_1600.jpg

That is all the major swathes of grass completed - more in-fills to be done but this is the beginning of the end (or end of the beginning)

Now the trees, fences, turnout rodding etc. to be done.

  10. http://www.rmweb.co....eaton-junction/

Although by no means fully representative, Seaton Junction or rather its general appearance provides the inspiration for Beaminster Road, unfortunately having no more that 16'x10' dictates that only a very small station can be built but you can still see the visual clues.

There are other stations on the route which are equally blessed but the proximity and preservation(albeit by neglect) of Seaton Junction does help in capturing the 'atmosphere' of the Yeovil-Exeter mainline.

However it is only a pastiche and not a copy which allows a location of my choice and to omit the other essential 'Seaton Junction' features.

Meanwhile, the awful Ratio concrete fencing is ready for planting and weathering, it is a horrible kit. Tonight, I have to drill lots of little holes, exactly 20mm apart and 'plant' the fence.
