  1. I've worked out what was happening. If you dont do the recomended alterations to peco electofrog points ( I couldnt work out why this was necessary-i know now) and then subsequently weather and ballast the track  the balast/weathering causes a resistance between the switch and the stock rails, this is sufficiant for the dcc80 not to switch and pass a lot of current through the on board resistor- enough in the attempt to drive a loco over it in the wrong direction to cause a lot of smoke but at the same time not enough current is passed to trip the boster overcurrent or district cut outs.
