  1. D & S do the AWS equipment for these loco's.

I used them on my B1 to K1 conversion a few years back and they're very good.

    Cheers.

    Sean.

    Hi Sean,

Doh! just a bit too late for me, ordered some AWS kit from Wizard, never mind will have a look at 'em tho'.

    31A-you're welcome.

    Cheers Phil.

  2. Hi David,

no probs, I've got 2 x 61138 as well, 138 was a Sheffield/Rotherham loco for approx 9 yrs (Darnall,Millhouses,Canklow) and a swift number change on the other to 61139, also a Darnall loco, will give all I want for now. Late crests will be added to these to make them contemporary with 61239 (all 3 shedded at Darnall in 1961).

    Cheers Phil.

  3. Hi,

61249 'Fitzherbert Wright' was at Stratford then Parkeston Quay until 1959, she moved north to Sheffild Darnall May '59 (BR database). There are pics on Flickr, http://www.flickr.com/photos/64215236@N03/6386483519/ shows her at Stratford April '59 with same S/box door as 243, later pics I've seen, at Sheffield Midland in '64 with wider spaced hinge strapping on door (sorry no links). Have renumbered mine as 249 as she would have been at Darnall post 5/59, after removing fillets and fitting Fox plates. AWS box & cylinder need removing also, as no sign of AWS on '59 pic or the '64 pics.

    Cheers Phil.

  4. A couple of interesting pics of 'strangers under the wires' appear in 'Great Central Mainline- North of Nottingham' (compiled by A.R.Kaye-Lowlander Publications). Class 17s D8616 & D8607 (Barrow Hill locos) heading thro' Woodhouse soon to be under the wires at Rotherwood, with coal for the Woodhead route (1964). Also A4 60014 'Silver Link' at Sheffield Victoria having arrived with a 'down special', ready for hand over to an EM2 (May 1956).

    Cheers Phil.

  5. OK I'll stop it, despite being over excited about rogue loco's getting lost all over the shop and me having to be sedated by my guards. However, not before I mention the Hall (or was it a Grange?) that reached Nott'm Vic and then got as far as Sheffield I think before being 'banned' (no one in that part of the country knew what to do with such a strange machine and it had very wide cylinders). That might must have had to return via Worksop, Retford & the ECML for 'clearance purposes? Then there were the various Bulleid Pacifics that strayed off course on footex, RCTS jaunts etc.

Seriously for a change, when did that Smeltic prototype thing start wandering up and down on the ECML? I saw it there at the X in 1960.

P (breathless from staggering about with stacks of books containing images of loco's off course) @ 36E (which is was actually two sheds as you know and where many strange loco's turned up so I'm told). :jester:

P.S. I'm told York (Tom stirs from his slumbers) was also a place where all sorts of unknown stuff appeared, especially at night on mail and parcels stuff.

    Hi Phil & GN,

6858 Woolston Grange made it to Huddersfield thro' Nottingham & Sheffield on ex GCR metals on Sat. 15th Aug. 1964. Apparently taken off after fouling platforms near Penistone. The train would have passed thro' Woodhouse (Sheffield) en route, so given my liking of odd workings, guess who's got a Grange awaiting it's new plates!

Great layout GN keep the pics coming :sungum: ,

    Cheers Phil.

  6. If this appeared on a layout one could think it was an overcooked cliche :O !

four buses in all, the two (route no.s 23 & 32) on the bridge were stationary, it was a mid circular route staging point. The two to the right are at the terminus of the 52 route, the one to left of the lamp is in mid turn. The location is Woodhouse Station Sheffield C1988. Cheers Phil.

  7. After looking further than the end of my nose I answered my own question! Gresley subs. did run in local trains around Sheffield, and indeed some were built at Cravens, there's a nice ex works photo in 'Sheffield Victoria to Chesterfield Central' by Ken Grainger, of Lav. Comp. no. 63914 outside the works. Phil.

  8. Am trying to find an excuse to have a rake of these, however I can't as yet find any photos of them on ex GCR metals around Sheffield. Were Gresley suburbans ever used in the area? If not I'll have to change history as they're very nice :sungum: . Cheers Phil.

  9. For anyone interested, as of Jan 28th !956 these locos were still around-47967-9, 47971-4, 47976-82,47986-8,47992, 47994-6 & 47998. 22 in total, from Ian Allen ABC 1956. Stationed at Toton & Hasland.

  10. Yeh, inspiring stuff, I found a pic a Garratt at Sheff Vic, but it was Gresley's giant!! There's still a chance that an LMS one might have turned up at Woodhouse Junction from Hasland as there were exchange sidings there, any excuse to have one of these iconic locos!! Cheers Phil.

  11. After Coachmann's mention of his 1958 Observer book I had a rummage under my chest of drawers, you know the place you put things that might come in handy next millenia  , and found a 1957 copy along with an Ian Allen ABC 1956. The ABC reports, as of Jan 1956, 22 Garratts still in service. The 1957 Observer book has all surviving locos at Toton & Hasland.

  12. In my little Observors book of Railway Lomotives 1958 edition, it says..." ...all (Beyer Garratts) have been withdrawn in the past three years, leaving one survivor at the time of going to press. Location : Stationed at Hasland (Chesterfield) and may be seen on local freight trains in the district". Running numver 47994.

Hi Coach, now that is very interesting indeed, could very easily have trundled its way up thro' Woodhouse (the chosen location). Coal was always the bread and butter of this particular stretch of line, ended up with MGR coal if I recall correctly. Thanks for that info much obliged. The one I've ordered is 47996! Cheers Phil.

  13. Just ordered one despite the knowledge that they probably never ran over exGCR metals (or did they?) on which a proposed future layout is going to be based. However the chosen location was a main coal route into Sheffield and was connected to the Midland at Chesterfield so who knows? :sungum: .Phil.
