  1. Take 2 coaches. 1 x TGS and 1 x FO.

Cut the guards area out of the tgs including the 1 passenger window, cutting as close to the next frame as possible

Cut the end two windows out of the one side of the FO leaving as much frame as possible

Insert section of TGS into FO side and trim guards end to fit.

    File, sand, paint and glaze

    Should about do it

Thats assuming the other side is just windows as per a normal FO?

  2. In particular the blue/grey variety

I have no memory of ever seeing them as they wher no doubt out of the area I used to visit as a kid, plus blue/grey is a few years before my interest in all things rail began,

I was wondering what the consists where like and what kind of haulage they had, as well as where they could be found??

Any info appreciated. I've got a growing rake of Jouef here that need something to pull them

  3. I pass toton most weeks along the A52 and this scene has been developing gradually for the past few months. It looks like DBS are storing all of their potential disposal haulage at Toton now, including the failed 37419 and a few 08's. Sad to see them like that. Presumably they will shortly be offering them for sale 'as is' and with any luck one or more of the smaller TOC's will be brave enough to save a few from the gas axe. If you look at it from DBS's point that a whole chunk of cash just sitting there. I bet the scrap value alone would pay a few months worth of the lease on the 66 fleet.

  4.

How often I've heard it said "we come for a ride behind a steam engine.......We can travel on a diesel anyday on BR". They can't of course but that sums up their knowledge of railways.

And in 50 years time when all 'BR' are using is Japanese built 200mph EMU's that all look the same and make virtually no noise how many people are going to get excited about the idea of seeing a huge rumbling beast beltching black smoke? Quite a few i would expect.

  5. The new tube stock ran past my house? How random is that!!

I'm sure it does get used as i could have sworn i heard a shed the other night. It was definatly a shed type 'ying' and it did seem to move so couldn't have been to do with the industrial units that are the other side of the line.

A couple of 'non train' people in Ashby have suggested that there may be a morning and afternoon working of 'frieght' along the line so i shall continue the quest.

One thing to note about the line is that it isn't fenced for the most part. I could easily have strolled along the track on sunday morning. I'll have a look through the Flickr, thanks for the tip.

  6. Ok so that's not it's official name, rather the name the campaigners were/are using to try and get much needed passenger services restored. What i'm waffling about is the goods only line from north of burton-on-trent that goes via Coalville and Bardon and joins the Midland in Leicester.

I know FL work the Bardon to Leicester section quite regularly as there are generally a couple of FRED's stables at Bardon and i remember seeing some excellent cab shots on the earlier RMwebs.

What i'm interested in is the workings to the west of Coalville, across through Ashby and down to the burton-Derby line. It passes within about 200 yards of my house but i haven't as yet seen a single train on it. I remember seeing a couple of EWS sheds crossing the M42 some years ago but that's it.

We have a signal box at Moira West if that helps as a passing point? It's definatly live as it's all been re-signed and tarmaced and the box has a NR hi-vis jacket hanging inside.

Can anyone with access to TOPS or Frieghtmaster give me the times of the regular workings?

  7. I had a relco on my first layout when i was a kid. I was mostly old Hornby stell track and was a constant battle to clean hence being draw into the Relco idea. It never really did anything and i got rather sick of the electric shocks i used to get when touching the track.

One thing i did notice was that if i left the layout powered up by accident my dad would go mental because the relco would put out that much HF interferance that he couldn't get Radio 4 in the kitchen! It seems the track was acting as an antenna and the relco a short range HF transmitter!

  8. I'm really just after coaches, either the motor or divisable, that can be attacked with an exacto saw

Does anyone know what the light grey is? I have Phoenix's blue and eurostar grey, but that appears to be the shade of the grilles rather than the body sides. I did see some mention of Renault Glacier White but i'm not sure if that's accurate?

  9. I have a set of the Hurst overlays but i'm not entirly sure i want to use them. Apart from the additional bulk they would add to the stock, it would certainly mean trying to match the paint finish or re-painting the entire set.

I did have the HO guys site bookmarked but it's not there anymore. It was basically a guide to a simple cut-and-shut of the more readily avaliable leading coaches into a passable intermediate coach. I'm sure it's not totally accurate i just fancied building a few more articulated units rather than cheating and using lots of expensive and inacurate divisble coaches.

I have the recent MR article, and it does refer to the original, but goes on about filing and filling windows which to me sounds like a recipe for disaster. The article i saw originally suggested cutting the side out and flipping it to give the raise window line effect of the bar car.

I do plan to have a full set one day, i just wanted to build it up gradually. The idea of having an 18 unit emu that is unusable until it's all finished would drive me slowly bonkers.
