  1. If the subcontractors were claiming to be HEIS compliant go to trading standards, is it not the main contractor who has gone bust? May even be worth getting trading standards to check out the HEIS reply, sometimes these type of bodies always deny liability in their first reply, Trading Standards may have a different view Secondly were the main contractors still members of HEIS at the time of instillation ? Again this is why I chose Solar together, as I would not have had a clue of what I was ordering. Plus we were offered an insurance backed guarantee, which I assume protects the buyer from these sort of issues I too had Greenscape install my system, no problems what so ever By the way what is the length of the Solar Together guaranty and what does it cover
  2. Two very badly tarnished loco sides after a 10 hour soak (for the worst one0 and 6 hour soak for the better one. Whilst I doubt it will increase the value much, it certainly will show it off much better. This was the better of the two sides If clock cleaning fluid works for the repair Workshop, I thought it was worth a try
  3. Taken out of the solution at 10pm and given a quick burnish, nearly back like new Well worth the £12 it cost
  4. On the left is what I brought and on the right what's being cleaned. The bottom side was very tarnished and been in for about 5 hours, the upper etch has only been in for just over an hour. Whilst not as shiny as on TV, I have no idea how long they soak them for on TV plus they may have started off much less tarnished Still very impressed and as I will be selling this (incomplete) kit cheaply anything is better than what it was like
  5. The backhead and parts painted, so I now have a better idea of what I am looking for with the Collet
  6. One of the benefits of using Solar together is they vet the suppliers/fitters and provide an insurance backed system If you have paid for a system and the contract stated the HEIS guarantee would be supplied I would take this up with the installers
  7. Yes defiantly Some Romford wheels, which alone are worth the £19, everything looks tidy so a decent kit for your money. I have at least 3 non running k's motors (2 smaller 1 larger) may need springs and brushes just was thinking of making at least 1 good one. However buy a modern can motor and a slimline High Level (I think Chris does two which will fit between the frames) gearbox and transform the loco
  8. We have real issues here where many small traders are stopping attending exhibitions to demonstrate their wares, and fewer model railway shops supporting the kit building group outside the very big players Sometimes its very difficult to find out what is actually available, even when some have a web presence. I guess its down to the fact there are less kit builders around ?. Or demand is too low
  9. Surprisingly when I returned home from the L&B workshop (working on replacement parts for coach 17 which is having an overhaul at Woody Bay) a package was waiting for me It was the two Slaters L&B 15/16 brake third, a quick check showed one bogie, 2 step boards and a pair of seats were missing and probably some glazing material. When the cost of these coaches are £100 each there is plenty of room for the spares, the most difficult to reproduce are the benches, I see a new pair of bogies are £24 so I might try and have a go at fabricating one but at £20 each I am happy I have not read the instructions, but interestingly the outer sides and ends slide over the inner sides and ends, these will be an interesting build
  10. Kits are a bit like busses you wait for ages then two or more all come at once. I am a member of the Lynton & Barnstable railway mainly as I volunteer at the East Anglian support group as they build their coaches 3 weeks ago I brought a job lot of incomplete loco kits, unknown to me there were incomplete kits of L&B Comp and brake third etched Langley 0-16.5 coached Anyway I became aware of a couple of Slaters early version brake 3rd coach kits, there was quite a few watchers and I thought I would have stiff competition as there were quite a few small bids. I was amazed to have won the first one for £23.57, the second one had more parts visible and was the better bet, well I got it for £11.50. plus another £5 postage. All I could see were a 3 step boards missing, providing the 2 35nn film boxes contained the brass castings Not quite so good a buy was A L&B 0-16.5 loco minus chassis a nd a few castings, this came in just under £100, I am hoping Langley or Slaters will sell me the chimney and dome which is missing and I should be able to knock up a basic chassis as most of it is hidden behind extended frames
  11. I think Colin* has used bar codes for a little while * Sorry if I have got the name wrong
  12. Phil at Hobby Holidays has done this with all his small parts for a few years and he has not been on the exhibition circuit for a couple of years
  13. Primed and painted black, next up painting the smaller parts. No guide with the instructions, so its down to Google and their photos
  14. Not for the smaller traders, or the traders who don't want to learn yet another skill. But as one of those who tends to buy more through the mail a good website is a godsend
  15. They have taken over Southeastern Finecast and it seems to be working OK, adding extra loco kits to the range should increase the viability of both ranges through economy of scale, plus to a certain extent those locos still on sale complement the SEF range, one interesting thought would be will they reintroduce some of the discontinued models As for affecting the show stands, I would assume they to a certain extent two different teams Its quite encouraging that we are seeing ranges being taken over and continued as the NuCast partnership is growing
  16. Ready for the paint shop, I have made a couple of mistakes, but that was why I did this before the Collet. It will also give me the chance to paint the backhead starting with black all over then brass, copper, white and red The brake standard also is in need of repair
  17. I need to clean some old brass and Nicklesilver brass etches, I have used Carrs cleaning solution in the past, it works very well and for the amount you get in a bottle its expensive. I have come across this from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/Brass-Clock-Cleaning-Concentrate-Solution/dp/B0B1F7H6R6/ref=sr_1_1?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.O-2Jd4UjNGgAc8Qcl35aShHVNzjd6YaxOpI5uNciesR2gkn0NNUe9acN9nO5f-qgmcSvfG60HY1RUoMEXe-al5LJ-D65O4Vks9G3shPIDK4XmEWaW7jTuYkNethWtRk2wKZeNftcoFlpGYLHxOZyPbsxeeDSLEZl1H9SpZfSKidHTWJcC_ZwYvt3bYKjV7ZIad79pxjdvA7N2arRnHUR9AS3Md3tHkx8Z0ZDTLYCSzwY2tTW8nYGIyQobW9ePcnFBktz1psv_-UEPSif-eZSgjt16OWIYW7zTZoFlLWubrc.zpEc1oxgLHQzjgncok1BNp1qBg9Fraxh7RRrZS5M7c0&dib_tag=se&keywords=Clock%2Bmakers%2Bcleaning%2Bsolution&qid=1708105245&sr=8-1&th=1 Clock makers cleaning solution , any thoughts about it please
  18. I have used a Circuit Specialists digital 75 watt solder station, excellent value and a great range of spares Firstly whatever make you decide on buy a selection of different sized bits (larger jobs need bigger bits) as these extra tips are designed for differing jobs Secondly buy a second hand unit, if one becomes faulty you have an instant back up, but I use two different tip sizes. Saves having to wait for the iron to cool when changing tips, and of course you always have a spare tip(s)
  19. I have a couple, one has a mk1 motor the other a HP2M. The Southeastern Finecast is a much better version with an etched brass engine. But then the K's kit must be all of 50 years old, compared with the Triang or Hornby Dublo chassis at the time if well built it was far better The detail on modern RTR locos in most cases is far better than the average builder can achieve, however the longevity and reparability of some of the modern locos sometimes is questionable
  20. I have made a start on the back head and on its own its quite a kit. The lower parts are the injector steam valves and steam heat valves and handles for both, I need to drill the holes for these Upper parts are some of the additional cab details, bottom right are the faces for the gauges. plus lots of copper pipes to add. I now have a slightly better idea of what some of the parts are called
  21. Steve sorry for the belated reply partly due to sorting out the kits, and yes I was still checking what I had sorted and either found new items or relocated items I put with the wrong locos As said before I am keeping the main items I require and selling the bulk numerically as I am trying to downsize my collection. In your case many traders just want complete kits and only pay as you say a fraction of their value. A tip so you enjoy things is to sell little and often, I have just sold (on a non discount weekend) 5 lots of what I call spares and netted £59, all packed up and sent the next day. Take your time with the presentation and sell on a day and time when people are in. In focus photos and clear description and sell on a weekend when reduced fees are on offer. in the days before listing create the listing as save for future use. If you make and save a standard listing template, this will save you hours. Good luck and happy selling The first step on building is not an item from the lot I brought this Springside kit some time ago with a vies of fitting it into an old CCW whitemetal kit I brought 2 or 3 years ago, the Springside Collet locos back head is far more complicated, plus I am not certain I have identified all the parts. So I thought I would build this kit first as its simpler Lots of bits and it could still be a bit clearer Still quite a few bits of wires once the parts have been attached
  22. Dave What the government or any pressure group says means nothing to me, when we brought this house we saw 2 new houses, parking put us off. There was no way we would have brought either of these two houses. The government/planners state a minimum, not maximum, housing targets are different. I can understand builders wanting to maximize profits though There are a couple of estates in the Maldon area where now parking is much better where at least 1 but normally 2 car parking spaces per house are provided plus off street, seems the developer(s) are starting to realize to get a premium they must consider parking
  23. I think we all now expect to get a discount on the advertised price, unless the house is just what we want and know others are interested When selling our previous house we found that our neighbor's estate agents took the other view by starting low and they had 3 offers all above the asking price. I took the other view by asking £50,000 more than the neighbors achieved (2 months earlier). we had two offers both below the asking price, but we got £25,000 more. We then had a dash to buy a house for ourselves (we put the house up for sale at the end of Jan and moved at the end of March) we tried to get a discount but only got £2500 off, unknown to us at the time the house had just been reduced by £50,000. I interview 6 estate agents, did not go for the cheapest quote but the one that gave me the most confidence, however the prize is not what you get for selling but what you buy, wait until you find the house you really want.
  24. We have never brought a new property and for the last 35 years had the ability to buy properties where we can park 2 or more cars If people stopped buying properties with insufficient parking developers would add more parking
  25. Ask them if you could buy a new set of instructions, if the full set is not enclosed with the chassis kit BTW The SEF chassis is so much better than the Triang/Hornby 2-6-2
