Thanks Mike, I've really enjoyed building it.

Some of you might remember the 0 gauge model of the station built by David White and Bill Hudson the best part of 40 years ago (!) that was in the old Slater's factory. I don't think it was ever fully finished, but the viaduct section is supposed to be at Butterley, though not on display. The station was scrapped because the boards had woodworm!

    Peter

I often wondered what had happened to the Matlock Bath 0 gauge layout. I used to visit and stare in awe in my younger days. I guess that there was no hope of reinstating it once the woodworm had taken up residence!

  2. Hello Gilbert, further to the earlier discussion regarding the multi-storey car park, I have been  racking my brains and I believe it was built in 1992-3. I actually worked on that job as site engineer so I ought to be more definite but age is taking it's toll! I have admired your layout ever since I started looking at RMweb. When I came across it I spent many happy hours reading the thread from start to finish and that was when it was about 250 posts! Great work and brilliant photo's.

    Regards, Malcolm.

  3. Well, here we are back on the sceptred isle, back in the jug agane and starting to finish off some of these wagons. First tranche are all for Wickham Market as thoughts turn towards its first outing in May.

Some of these vehicles have been built for a while but needed weathering and loads.

    palvan-sludge-carrier.jpg

GE tender as a sludge carrier and a Ks Palvan. I've detailed the palvan a little and also made a plastic roof to reduce the weight.

    oxford-bachmann-unfitted.jpg

Pair of unfitted opens, one Oxford, one Bachmann. Both have had some detailing work - the Oxford was a repaint from the LNER, done so you could see the old lettering - which I then sheeted over. Next time I'll leave it uncovered. The Bachmann is a repaint from the LNER version with extra body brackets added.

    bachmann-pipe-parkside-open.jpg

Bachmann Pipe, from their bargains list and a Parkside 5 plank open. The Parkside was a rescue of a badly built job, having had the corners tidied up and new brake gear added.

    bachmann-parkside-steel-highs.jpg

Pair of steel highs, one Parkside, one Bachmann (again from the Hattons bargain list). Some detailing on the Bachmann one - solebar brackets and lamp irons - while the Parkside was another rescue of a basket case.

    ks-lms-shock.jpg

Lats of this batch, a Ks LMS shock open. Again, a certain amount of detail added to this one and it has no floor, again to save weight. Hence the need for the sheet.

Now, with Grantham not due out until November I was looking at the projects I have for Wickham Market and discussing them with the Ely chaps. I was going to crack into the Easterling set based on a carriage list given me by Andy Rush, but I was advised that they'd rather have an F6 for the Framlingham branch first. I've had the Gibson kit in the pile for a little while, so on Sunday afternoon I brought it out.

    Gibson-F6-1.jpg

This will be 67230, as i have the most photographs of that one. Now, don't make the mistake of thinking it's almost finished. Up to now has been the easy part - there are no witness marks for any of the castings, steps or handrails, I haven't yet made up the drive mechanism and the carrying wheels aren't even ordered. Most importantly I haven't worked out how to get it to go round 3' or tighter curves, because it sure as hell won't as it is. I have some ideas, but would be pleased to hear from anyone else who's already been here.

    Hi Jonathan

I built the F5 some years ago (and have another in the pile!) and eventually realised that it would not negotiate anything less than 8ft radius as designed! I cut the main frames just ahead of the front drivers and cut and carved them to suit a pony truck arrangement for the front axle. It ran very nicely and stayed on the track! Regards Malcolm

  4. Work on the chassis has been on going. It would appear that there is just one remaining item to attach thereto but first a couple of pictures . . . .

    attachicon.gif261218_1.jpg

Look closely at the above image and compare it to the one below!

    attachicon.gif271218_1.jpg

    Can you spot the difference?

The final task on the chassis as far as I can see from the instructions (other than fitting the pipes to the sandboxes) is to fit the said sandboxes. I did this out of turn because I'm also supposed to:

Laminate the two parts of the chassis toolbox front and fit between the chassis frames. Cut in half the toolbox wrapper & solder in place, ensuring access is left for the mounting bolt.

I've no idea what these parts look like but it's club this evening so hopefully someone will guide me. In the meantime, back to the sandboxes.

The sandboxes are white metal castings with the inevitable oddments of flash that need removing. I set about this working on the assumption that the long side of the castings was soldered to the frames. Consequently and probably without thinking deep enough about why I was finding what I did, I removed the approx. 5mm diameter by about 2mm deep protrusion from said long side thinking it had something to do with the casting process.

It wasn't until I had done all four and had then looked at one of the lose-up pictures of 41708 that I realised that the long side of the sandbox should be horizontal (and that the sandbox should be affixed to the frames by the smaller flat side). The protrusion that I'd so glee-fully removed was in fact the filler/cap.

Fortunately, having looked at the picture of 41708 again I could see that the filler cap and fixing were shaped. I turned this to my advantage and cut three different size discs from 0.010" plasticard which I then stuck together and fixed to the casting.

The instructions also state that the sandboxes should be fixed "in front of the guard irons". I must admit that this could have been an easier place to fix them although the sand pipes would need to have been significantly longer. However, looking again at the picture of 41708, as far as I can tell the sandboxes appear to be positioned between the guard irons and the wheels/brake shoes so that's where I've put them. I shall make fitting the pipes one of the last jobs, possibly after painting.

I built an Oldbury Models kit of this loco a few years ago which involved a lot of very enjoyable research including crawling all over 41708 and taking a lot of photo's. With reference to your query about the toolbox, the Midland era loco's were fitted with a toolbox between the frames at the rear (there is a good photo in Midland Locomotives volume 3, p 91 Wild Swan. The LMS/BR period locos had the toolbox relocated to the front nearside footplate, where they often seem to have received damage.

  5. Well, one day to go! I'm off down to the club room this morning to pack-up Fullers Wharf ready for the move to the venue. I may be a bit late arriving at the college as I have to attend a hospital appointment mid-afternoon but rest assured the team will take care of things until I get there! If you are planning to set up this afternoon then please do not arrive before 4.30pm as we are not allowed access until the students have vacated the premises. Looking forward to a good show!

  8. A reminder to all our Ely & District MRC Members (and wives, girlfriends etc.) that we normally have a superb collection of home made cakes "appear" just in time for the Cafe to open (in the main hall) next Saturday 20th May...these cakes don't just appear out of thin air you know - someone has to make them!  Hint, hint.

I've booked the van (extra LWB Sprinter) so the barrier and tables collection crew (me, Keith and Andy C) can collect said items from CMRA's Welwyn store next Friday ahead of the show.

Someone REMIND ME NOT TO DRIVE UNDER ELY RAILWAY BRIDGE in it (when we also go and get Westgate Park from the Clubroom later that afternoon) or there might be a disastrous scalping of the van's roof!!!  - and Stuntney Road will be even more jammed up than normal  :O

Exhibition poster attached - plus Club's website in the signature.

I have sent the finalised floor plans to the committee members so there are no excuses for not getting the stands in the right place!

  9. Hello

I'm doing two this weekend Malcolm, Watford Saturday and Derby Sunday, nothing like a bit of flagellation for purging the soul. By the way if you are looking for an East Anglian layout in the future we've got one called Fenchurch St Peter.

                                                                                                    Cheers

                                                                                                              George

Hi George, I will definitely take you up on that. I'll be in touch.

    Regards

    Malcolm

  10. Well spotted that man! Yes its at the City of Ely Community College, Downham Road, Ely CB6 2SH. The opening times are 10.30am to 4.30pm. Apparently some satnavs will send you to the rugby club on the other side of the A10 Ely bypass so the best advice I can give is to follow our signs when you are approaching Ely. I hope you can make it and have an enjoyable day.

    Regards Malcolm

A late change to the list of traders. After a quick blast down the A1 to Welwyn on my trusty Triumph Trident I can announce that Kevin's Model Railways will be taking on the mantle of second-hand trader as Milnsbridge Models are unable to grace us with their presence for the first time in more years than I care to remember. As you may imagine I was somewhat concerned at the loss of one of our main traders but I hope that this is going to prove a fruitful relationship - welcome Kevin!

    Regards Malcolm

  11. Hi Malcolm

  14. Hello George, I built an MTK 7mm scale kit of the Q1 a few years ago (it would have been easier to scratch-build!) and I got a copy of the drawing in MORRILL Jan 1995 which I blew up to 7mm scale. you are quite welcome to a copy if you like. I also strongly recommend you track down a copy of John Scott Morgan's "The Story of the Q1's" published by KRB Publications ISBN0-9544859-1-2 which is full of useful details and photo's of every class member. Good to see you have returned to O gauge.

    Regards
