  1. Yes I estimated roughly the same but see whatever looks right when assembled, I will be doing all this soon hopefully on my canopies when the curved brackets arrive.

It may be possible for you to represent the white lines on the glazing itself rather than making separate tiny strips to fit between? Maybe you could do this on inkscape?

Lovely picture of the roof. What are the dimensions of those glass panels do you think? I’m having a crisis of confidence at the moment that I’ve made my main truss too large for it to be glazed in a similar way to this.

Well I've had a quick look at Ilkley and I think they're a similar design to Skipton, just over a foot wide, maybe 40cm. When scaled down to your N gauge it's going to be very fine. Good luck... will send more photos if needed.

Ha ha. I know! It made me laugh.

Not 100% sure about lighting yet. I’ve ordered some 3mm and 5mm warm white wide-angle LEDs and will see what they look like hidden in the apex pointing down. I need the wires to be hidden so may use copper tape. I also need the roof to be removable so I can get into it. I think a bit of trial and error will be in order. Also trying to decide whether to glaze it and if so, how. Current thinking is to use printed acetate with suitably grubby appearance. I’ve not thought that far ahead yet as to be honest I am not sure if this structure will even work! Have you thought about how you’re going to do yours yet?

I will use hanging style fitting warm LEDs but I've got some very thin copper enamelled wire which would need to be run in the roof then out to the power feed. Copper tape may work out fine when all done and painted up.

  4. I think as the drive mechanisms have improved during recent years, more attention has gone into the interior but not the paint schemes. It's nice that you can put the effort in to make it look how you want.

Great work on the pulley tensioner, I hope it's strong?

    Cheers.

  5. Hello,

It's all a learning experience, I don't think those fantastic layouts you mention got their catenary all perfect first time around, must have taken huge effort to get to that skill level.

Looking good for you with the modifications.

    Cheers.

  6. On first impression, my 66704 seems superbly finished. I have only test run it on straight track so far, there is a wobble for sure, I may modify it so that the covers are not connected to axles anymore.

I have added 'Shawplan' nameplates, now it just needs weathering for ultimate realism. The DCC lighting functions are a big plus for me...

Hattons - I would like to see Metronet 66719, 66718/21 (London) if it's possible to do those older liveries...

    Hi armleyroad,

The layout's progressing well, will be a nice 'railway in the scenery' layout.

A suggestion for your cassettes; a friend of mine used a similar system in 7mm scale with larger diameter but shorter length brass rod/tube, approximately 10mm long from memory - the engagement of the rods to tubes was eased by filing a slight taper/bevel on the outside ends of the rods and inside ends of the tubes. You could use a countersink or drill bit for the tubes - possibly the latter now that the tubes are fitted?

    Cheers,

    Mark

    Hi there Mark,

For me the benefit of N scale is the 'railway in the scenery' look for a reasonable size, this layout would be 10m long, 1m wide if scaled up to OO. The detailing on RTR models does not seem that far off OO standards. I'm happy enough with the cassettes for now.

  8. During the last few days the progress has been solid, wire mesh has been completed today and I've started work on the fiddle yards. Meantime a few small  things have been done including Dapol signals, making dummy disc shunt signals and loco detailing on 56006.

Next video update will be on Sunday*.

  9. Hi there and welcome to the beginnings of my first N layout.

I'm  basing it on the Ais Gill Summit part of the line with the Signal Box and 70's track plan.

So far the baseboards and track laying/wiring has been well progressed, terrain building is the next big task.

You can see the first video update here:

    Any comment/advice is welcome...
