  1. Just spotted on ebay a photograph of a J10 in a siding alongside Walton shed . If you search on the site 'J10 LNER locomotive' it should bring it up . Not sure it's of any use to your research but thought I would mention it to you.

    Excellent layout coming together now

Just as a matter of interest were you involved in a layout years ago called ' Walton & Anfield'  which I remember on the exhibition circuit at the time

    Hi

I was one of the two people who built and exhibited Walton and Anfield.

  2. Hi,

Just had word that my test prints of my 4mm:ft AWS Magnets are on their way,I will hopefully have these ready, along with some most of my other products with me at Wycrail this Saturday, I'll be helping to steward, but if you see me, grab me and I'll show you them!

    Simon

I received my AWS and other bits from Shapeways yesterday and have just had a chance to check them over. I can only say they are excellent!! Photos once I get them in grey primer I think and if I can find a peco one a comparison shot too - they are chalk and cheese.

  3. Hi,

With some help from Mike Turner, I have drawn out some Point Heating Transformers:

    attachicon.gifPoint Heating Transformers.jpg

They are a little basic, but there was some detail on them that would never have come out if done to scale and looked silly if done so that they can be printed. Also, the base of the model is wrong, it should be a bent metal bracket type thing, but that would have been too fragile and meant using a much more expensive material, so I've done it as a concrete base instead (to the correct size and thickness)

Here, they are rendered in standard Metallic Plastic, although the render looks a little rough, so I might print them in Polished WSF (for some reason there are parts of the model too thin for the Polished Metallic Plastic despite the model been over the recommended thickness :scratchhead:

    Simon

    Hi Simon

If you haven't already gone to print with these I will send you a drawing of the concrete I beam base that these usually stand on which would look better than a slab.

  4. Morning Mark

I suppose that's the best side of our hobby, we can get all our favourite places an memory's and put them together to make something that's special and unique to ourselves, which other people will enjoy to.

    Cheers, Paul

    Hi Paul

Such changes are not my cup of tea but as the saying goes it's your train set so good luck! Don't forget that there was a station at Edge Lane which closed in 1948 see http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/e/edge_lane/index.shtml and plans for a new one although that will be on the far side of Edge Lane rather the junction side as it's predecessor.

  5. Hi Paul

Your call of course but to me Edge Lane with a loop isn't Edge Lane. You would have to ask what the loop was provided for given the trains only come off the main line or out of the sidings around the corner.

Pighue Lane with it's reversing moves is just as interesting and even with wires more prototypical. Anyway here's the signalling plan at closure.

  6. Hi Paul

You had already thought about adding a loop and wires at Edge Lane so I don't see the problem in adding an overbridge between Pighue Lane and Exhibition as a scenic break, it's the only one your short of!! And if you still want wires then assume the original plans to electrify between Liverpool and Earlestown had been completed and that the section between Exhibition and Olive Mount was done too, more plausible than a stabling point on the Bootle branch. There were actually electric holding sidings at Exhibition anyway.

  7. Hi Paul

Edge Lane Jcn is nice but Pighue Lane Jcn is nicer and just around the corner :-) Ok you would loose the southport passenger service although you could still bluff one coming in from Olive Mount but you would retain the aintree specials. The big plus for Pighue Lane is that trains from Exhibition Jcn to the docks reversed here through a single slip in the double junction.

If you look at this picture:

    https://www.flickr.com/photos/happyraildays/6851764900/in/set-72157627339905422

The 40 is waiting to draw it's train forward through the tunnel to Olive Mount - the brake van is next to the loco. It will uncouple at the far side of Olive Mount tunnel then run back to Pighue Lane via a crossover there. It then drops on to the back (now front) of its train via the crossover you can see in this picture then heads for the docks via the slip also just visible.

  8. I came across a diagram of Lime Street Station earlier and thought it was worth sharing on here. It was published in a book titled 'Modern Railway Working' which was released in 1912. Looking at the plan, the one thing that I noticed are the additional catch/trap points compared to just the single trap that appears on the model. Perhaps someone could confirm whether they are included in the 1945-47 layout plan and have been omited from the model or were simply not there later on. All in all a very interesting piece of information to come by.

I should add that I have taken this image from the following website, which does not credit the image to anyone or the author. In which case I assume the image to be copyright free. http://locodriver.co.uk/Railway_Encyclopedia/Part219/Part03/index.html If you click on the image, it opens up to quite a large version.

    Hi Michael

I spoke to John about the missing traps when he happened to be on the same train travelling up to Glasgow show back in February and he was aware of them and was thinking of adding them as dummies now because of how far on he is with the build. I am sure one of his team can confirm this.

Looking at the plan I think it dates from pre 1896 (ish) as that's when the connections at the end of platforms 6 and 7 (4 and 3 on here) were altered. Also I have a plan that shows another trap in the scissors to the right of the signal box which effectively created a short through siding in the middle of the throat where a loco could stand.

    Nice find

  9. Hi Steve

Good for John, I know he likes to get things right!

Whilst scanning some stuffs for 'Signal Engineer' I came across the following which might be more use than the previous drawing I posted as it gives more detail. Admittedly it's for flat bottom rail but that would only really affect the drawings it cross references.

  10. Hi Steve

I hate to say this but John has got most of his FPLs the wrong way round - they bolt goes in and out from the front of the switches not the back except on switch diamonds (IIRC). Unless track circuited, fouling bars would be fitted and you will find that the way these are arranged the FPL has to operate this way. That said it is very rare to see the bar itself modelled.

  11. Hello Everyone,

This evening I have managed to get some more work done on the FFA/FGA after figuring out all the measurements and plans I have found. I have yet to add any small details or locking equipment as well as brake gear, but the chassis is complete as far as I can see in terms of main components. Instead of splitting this model up like the parrot, for added strength and ease of drawing/ assembly, the model is intended to be printed as a single component. I also intend to print the wagon in Polyamide with the buffers and smaller details, with the bogies in FUD.

    Here are some renders,

Now to the tricky part of getting the containers to locate in the correct places, hopefully I can design it to take the plastic clips that Bachmann supply. Does anyone know if C-Rail use the same pins?

    Wild Boar Fell

    Hi Wild Boar

Not sure if you realise but the transverse struts are not in line from one side of the wagon to the other, they are stagered. See this photo of an FGA 601342 on Martin Reids excellent smug mug site.

  12. Hi Gary

Just back from a weeks holiday in Scotland walking the dogs. Imagine my pleasure when I noticed on the map that our walk to the abandoned settlement at Smirisary would mean we would pass through Glenuig.

We stopped at the station and whilst my wife pottered about in the craft shop that has now taken over part of the main building I wandered on to the platform just in time to watch a 156 from Fort William arrive.

The signals have all gone but the box still survives and appears well maintained as a bothy, control now being affected by ground frames and RETB from Banavie centre. The siding to the distillery has long been lifted but I noticed that the one along the harbour appeared to have been in use. Talking to the driver of the unit he informed me DBS had recently trialled loading timber here and a class 57 "Thunderbird" had been used similar to the trials a while back from Crianlarich.

All in all an interesting day. Or did I take too much of the Moidart in the nearby Glenuig Inn....? ;-)

    Regards

    Mike
