Thank you all for your advice about Kadee’s I think no 18 is probably the most suitable.
I will probably need to get a hight gauge to make sure everything matches up

Could anyone give me an idea as to what Kadee coupling would be suitable to fit to Bachmann and Hornby wagons, using the nem coupling?
There seems so many different ones, that I’m not sure which would be best.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for your comments, yes the gswr is well worth modelling, pity it doesn’t get the attention it deserves.I well remember the double headed ore trains rumbling through Corkerhill from Hunsterton to Ravenscraig;all now just a distant memory.
Hopefully we will be able to get back to the SECC next year.

Glad you like it,I think a painted back scene blends in a little better than a photo, though some of the new ones are pretty good.

A recently completed layout, loosely based on the Highland Railway.Lochinver does exist, and I believe a line was proposed many years ago,but like so many other projects,it never materialised.
The model took 5 months to complete track work is Peco code 100 with large radius electrofrog turnouts. These are operated by wire in tube, using slider switches to change the polarity of the frog.
Signals are cobbled together using mse parts, and they are also operated using the wire and tube method.
Buildings are scratch built, and taken from numerous locations in the Highlands.Either end of the layout has cassettes made from mdf,and aluminium angle.
The backscene is hand painted, trees are kebab sticks, covered in glue from a hot glue gun, sprayed, and then covered with Woodland Scenics foliage, and the building are constructed from mounting board, and then covered in Slaters Plasticard.
I have tried to create a uniformity with the layout, everything I hope blends in together, whether that be buildings, locos road vehicles etc.
The baseboards are of conventional design, both 60ins.x16ins.and jointed together by brass dowels for alignment, and coach bolts.
The period is mid fifties,to early sixteen, which means I can run both steam and green diesels, and with a little bit of modellers license, blue stock as well.
Its not a layout for the purists, instead its been constructed for the feel, rather than absolute accuracy, but I am happy with the end result,as I think I have achieved that.

Peter Denny's Buckingham layouts had a great influence on me back in the 60's. I still have the Railway Modeller mag (around 1964 ?) which was devoted to his layout. The intrigue for me was his gas works, how he wrapped card round one of his wife's cooking pans (2 of em - one a bit smaller than the other) laminated to make a gas holder. I duly tried this and got a clout round the ear for evo-sticking up mothers best pans !!
Gas works !! Wonderful places, my first day of work was at Wigan gas works in 1969, nearly getting run over by a small diesel shunter, just before the coal gas plant was closed.
Glad to know his layout is in safe hands.
Edited to add - Just remembered, In that mag above was a series of articles written by peter. How he built the Gasworks, Buckingham Signalbox and portable work bench. These articles are also in his book "Peter Denny's Buckingham Branchlines Part 1" published by Wild Swan. Both Pt 1 & Pt 2 are excellent books. Peter also wrote about the smoked brick paper he used in his gas works buildings , I've forgot the make, but he searched high and low for the last remaining sheets back in the 60's. (Was it erg ?). Smoky brick paper, can anyone recommend one (to buy, not download).

The model railway dept.at Argyle Model Dockyard was down a flight of stairs,if I can remember correctly, very claustrophobic, and hot,but always plenty to see, happy days!

Sorry to hear that they are closing,Glasgow in the sixties was well served by some great shops,Glasgow Model Centre,Argyle Model Dockyard,D&F,MacMillans(two shops I believe)MacKays in Paisley, and the shop in Cambridge St(think it was called Glassfords,it was an experience to shop there!I remember a small premises.in St Enoch Square,up several flights of stairs,ModelmastersI think,All a sad memory now
Where will we go now?

In reply to the problems you have with the 14XX,remove the traction tyre wheels, and fit a set of normal14XX wheels (without the grove),they simply pull off and push on,Peters spares should stock them.check the wheel gauge is okay. Then put some lead weight in the cab,I used flat lead sheet glued to the inside roof.My 14XX will pull six or seven wagons or two coaches, more than adequate for this loco, and runs lovely, Hope this helps,Warren

Greetings one and all,
Recieved today a (used) Hornby 14XX, advertised as 'like new', which it was...except for the traction tyres, one of which it shed after running a few foot in what is best described as a bumpy fashion. In my eagerness, i didn't check before running (lesson learnt). Can i run the loco with the remnants of the tyres removed, or is it not advisable? The usual Hornby bumph wasn't included with the loco (previous owner presumably having kept or chucked it), so i've no diagram to work from in order to dismantle it to replace the tyres. i've never actually attempted so much as removing a locomotive body. Would it be difficult to replace the tyres? The connecting rods etc. are relatively more simple than a larger loco....
Apologies for what could be construed as a silly question, but i'm fairly new to the hobby, and always get good advice/tips/help here.
Cheers!
Adrian
PS, if it's of any consequence, the receipt for the original sale was in the box, and it was sold new in 2014...

Just a few photo’s of a recent project that has had a slight makeover.A recent housemove has given me a large open atic, which will enable me to enlarge and extend the layout.
Hope you enjoy the photos.
