  1. Hi Philip,

Thanks for informing. Unfortunately there is not much progress on the layout due to some other priorities. For example I've made a totally new module, named Ollerbrook Booth, which attended in two exhibitions in The Netherlands.

Cysgod-y-Fedwen has been set up in our clubroom. The control panel has been wired up. And for the last 6 months it has been tested thoroughly (read, we have played with the trains on it :locomotive: ).

This autumn we will be starting with the scenery. Hopefully I can show you some progress in the not so distant future.

  2. @John,

Thanks for the compliment. We use the module standard from a Dutch railway forum (beneluxspoor.net). It uses 60 cm black boxes between the individual modules. This way the modules can differ in location, company and even time (although the trains will cross all of them).

The couplings on the coaches of the HST are made by myself (lasercut). It's just a simple bar with two loops bolted to shortened Hornby couplings. The Mk1 rake is owned by Leen (3737). I thought he used slightly modified Hornby close couplings.

    @Rich,

Ah, from the Chinese take-away. :secret:  It was nice talking to you guys.

  3. Let's start with introducing one of the modules.

    gallery_129_4459_204609.jpg

This is Ollerbrook Booth. It is set somewhere in the Peak District, with the Hope Valley line near Edale as the main inspiration. The aim was to get the feel of the dales on the module. I hoped to capture the tranquillity of the area.

    gallery_129_4459_54211.jpg

I've started the build of this module about two months prior to our first big outing on Eurospoor 2017 in Utrecht. I opted to use some ready-made structures and scenery to get it done in time. The bridge and barn are from Hornby, trees and bushes from MBR Model and the background is from ID Backscenes. Although the module now has attended at two shows, there is still a lot of scenery work to do. Mainly work on the grass and greenery, the water in the brook, some more fencing and further detailing.

    gallery_129_4459_180324.jpg

One of the features I wanted to incorporate in the module were working semaphores that reacted to the trains passing. The signals I've used are Ratio kits. They are driven by a servo connected to an Arduino board. Train detection is done by an IR-receiver just behind the signal. A few seconds after the end of a train has been detected, the signal will turn to 'danger'. After 12 seconds, the signal will turn to the 'off' position again. If a second train passes the signal at 'danger' a relay will switch off the current from the track. The film below shows the working signal in the distance after a GWR AEC Railcar has passed.

Further pictures will be posted in the future.

Meanwhile I'm also working on another module (Cysgod-y-Fedwen) with two clubmates. You will find it here: http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/118309-cysgod-y-fedwen/

  4. Hi all,

Last weekend the 'Britse ModuleBaan' has attended at the Eindhoven Maker Fair. This was also the first outing for Cysgod-y-Fedwen.

    gallery_129_4139_77303.jpg

Although all the motors for the points and ground signals are now working, they couldn't be operated. Simply because the control panel hasn't been wired yet. But the trains can travel over the main line.

    gallery_129_4139_61822.jpg

    All working well.... Although :umbrage:

    gallery_129_4139_37921.jpg

We had one or two derailments. Probably due to the screws that temporarily fix the track in place. That will be solved once ballasting commences.  :declare:

    Regards,

    Werner

  5. Another small update.

Still working on the underside of the modules. There are lots of wires to be connected. Progress looks pretty slow, also due to the holidays. But we are getting there. Almost all motors are now connected on the main module. This module also has the ground signals in place. We are about to calibrate the motors tomorrow and then test them.

    Paul is busy connecting...

A Close up of two point motors

We also made a temporarily signal tableau. This will eventually be replaced by a lever frame.

More updates soon (and hopefully one with a moving train)

  6. I would go for just two platform faces in stead of three. The platform could be located between track 1 and 2. Track 3 can act as a loop and goods reception siding.

I think plan 2 is better on the loco spur. I think it looks better to replace the double slip in the goods yard by two points.

  7. With the help of Paul and Mike I've corrected the signalbox diagram. The shunt ahead signal (5) has moved to the advanced starter. And the "in between pull" has been corrected.

    gallery_129_4139_7488.jpg

I want to incorporate a working interlocked leverframe. So I have been working on the interlocking table. It should be something like this.

    gallery_129_4139_291.jpg

The signals with the red text are locked when the levers are in the normal position (backward). A little bit special are levers 15 and 16 which can lock 10 and 14 in both positions. Is this correct? Any other suggestions or corrections?

    Werner

  8. Hi all,

Just a small update to let you guys and girls know that we are currently laying down the track. And some pictures to prove this.

All the pointwork is in place. The rest of the track should be straightforward.

  9. Looks like a very interesting project - good luck! Can I just ask what software you used for the track plan in your first post? I have tried using 3D in the latest issue of AnyRail and have not achieved the same success!

    Hi Mike,

I've used Wintrack (version 9.0) for this. See http://wintrack.de/.

The 3D-library for Wintrack is mostly German orientated. But if you are skilled enough (I am not), you can make some UK-models. This is an very nice example that Sierd-Jan (Trains&armour on this forum) has made for us with his 3d models.

  10. Thanks, Mike.

I don't know what the exact position of signal 5 will be (on- or off-scene). We might place it on the other end of the bridge and use the shunt signal.

The distance between points 7 and 14 is about 80 cm. We will see in practice if we will include an extra stopsignal on the down line.

  11. I have been working on the signalbox diagram of the layout. It should be something like this.

    gallery_129_4139_38445.jpg

    1. Up Distant
    2. Up Home
    3. Up Starter (or would this be the inner home?)
    4. Up Shunting Signal
    5. Up Advanced Starter
    6. Ground Signal - Down Line to Down Siding
    7. (Catch) Points - Down Line ↔ Down Siding
    8. Ground Signal - Down Siding to Down line
    9. Ground Signal - Up Siding to Up Line
    10. (Catch) Points - Up Line ↔ Up Siding
    11. Ground Signal - Down Line to Up Line
    12. Points - Down Line ↔ Up Line
    13. Ground Signal - Down Siding to Up Line
    14. Points - Down Siding ↔ Up Line
    15. Ground Signal - Up Line to Up Siding or Platform
    16. Ground Signal - Up Line to Down Line or Siding
    17. Down Starter
    18. Down Home
    19. Down Distant

I'm not too sure about signal 4 and the arrangement of signals 15 and 16.

As there are no facing points, I assumed that there will be no FPL. Is this correct?

Both points with the 0 would be manual operated points (not controlled from the signalbox).

    Comments are welcome.

  12. Thanks, Philip. That Ammonia train would be a very nice train to model. I presume that they changed motive power at Pontypool Road. I've only seen pictures of this train in charge of a pannier tank.

  13. Thanks for the information, Andy.

Actually the Wye Valley lines would fit better with my current collection, as i've a couple of panniers, B-set, autocoach, class 14 and baby warship already on the shelves. I've only got a Grange as a 'big steam engine'. And Paul (the third member) recently bought a Jubilee. So enough to put on the wishlist ;).

I've found two pictures in 'Steam in the Welsh Landscape' by Michael Welch. One of an express and one of a mixed freight, both pulled by a Hall Class. I've also found a picture of a Castle overtaking a WD 2-8-0. Seems that a lot of different traction would be possible.

    Some additional questions:

Which loco would drive the stopping service? A Pannier Tank?

Which loco's served the line after the introduction of  diesels? WR Hydraulics? Of MR loco's (24, 25, 37, 47?)?

    Regards,

    Werner

  14. Thanks, Jane. The name has been worked out using Google Translate, knowing that there were peculiarities with the Welsh language but not which ones. As the name is not entirely set in stone yet and we like to be accurate, we might make this slight change. I will talk about this with the guys.

The name has been changed to the proper Welsh grammar. :)

  15. @ The Johnster:

Thank you for dreaming with us. We have the Nantyderry station building in mind (among a few others) to be modelled. But the model will probably also contain some features of other railway lines in the area, like the Wye Valley lines.

Do you know any nice reads (books or internet) on the line? And with reads I actually mean something with a lot of pictures ;).

I know that there is a Middleton Press book on the line from Newport to Herefort, but are there others?

    Werner
