That P-Train coach used to sit in the foyer of the CM&EE Dept. at the RTC in Derby. I suppose BR donated it to the Silk Mill when the project was cancelled. At one time there were two of them with the articulated bogie connecting them, but the 2nd one vanished after a while
The Silk Mill used to have a DTS coach on display too complete with a double (action) manned cab.

Not really on the subject of this thread, but I'll be giving an illustrated short talk on APT tilt systems at the Crewe 30th Anniversary Event this weekend.
It won't be all that technical, just a guide to how and why they did what they did. I'll definitely give the talk on the Saturday, maybe Sunday as well if there's enough demand.
I recorded Kit's presentation on the Saturday and it can be seen / heard at the link below -

You are right Kit, and the TBF should have a passenger door on it too on the side shown.

If anyone knows anything about this could they please help. Any would be appreciated.
See below scan from Tomorrows Train Today for a representation of the APT-S driving power vehicle

More evidence that it is something to do with the allocation of seats comes from the fact that the sheet appears in the 'Boarding Pass Kiosk' in the BTF's Round Trip to Glasgow film.
See still here -

I have attached it too as my website seems to be offline again :-(

"Waster Point", whatever one of those might be...?
It is a "WAITER POINT" Sorry the scan isn't too clear.

And soon will be again!
Except that the power car won't be slotted into the existing set, due to lack of room and that it is going to be a 'walk through' exhibit so visitors can see what's inside, with perspex panels replacing the current metal covers.

Further to my original post earlier today, we've found most of the formations to be correct. However we are still missing the 7 car set. The flyer indicates that this is proposed to be with two power cars, therefore it cannot be any other combination than a 3+2+2 formation. Regardless how many times I've trawled through the books, I cannot find an APT with that consist. Any ideas?
3+2+2 was how the APT-P was originally preserved at CHC in 1988.

Just to remind you all that the new Ian Allan book "APT the untold story" is out in the UK today.

Perhaps the One Show is to coincide with the following book being published next month?
Rob
APT: THE UNTOLD STORY - A STUDY OF A CONTROVERSIAL PROJECT AND ITS DESCENDANTS
The story of the APT is one of ultimate failure. The pioneering project for a tilting train was headline news in the 1970s and 1980s but it failed as much for political reasons as it did for technical reasons.
The story is still controversial, and many still see it as a missed opportunity. Yet the legacy of the original APT project is that tilting trains built by foreign competitors run almost unnoticed on Britain’s railway network today and much of the power car technology heavily influenced the design of the later InterCity 225s and the Class 91 locomotives.
Now David Clough has delved into recently released archive material and has unearthed a story never before told. He reveals some of the top-level thinking behind the APT project, internal politics and some of the real reasons for APT’s eventual, and expensive, demise.
Analytical and balanced, this is a fascinating read for those who would like to know more about what happened behind the scenes of the doomed APT project.

The paint and bodywork on 49006 wasn't touched at all since it left BR until it arrived at the ERM so it was just the environment that caused the deterioration.
The sunny side heated up so much it expanded then cooled, in winter water got behind the cracks in the paint, froze and made it worse.

If it wasn't for my mum we probably wouldn't have 49006 today as a previous manager at The Railway Age sold the power car for scrap. By pure chance mum was in the office and answered a phone call from the boss of the scrap company who rang to check that "all hazardous substances had been drained from it" as his team were about to light their cutting torches!! Mum told him to stop working and rang Richard Gibbon at the nrm who then called the scrapman straight back.

For more information see here -The NRM stored it away at Kineton I think, but I'm sure Rob will correct me if I'm wrong.

If anyone has any pictures of 49006 at the ERM Coventry I will update the website.

Kit - your picture was better though, my reply was sent from my phone, so that was the only one I could find quickly online.[beat me by half an hour Rob. ]

True, but after a few years outside at Crewe without a wash, T-CUT or repaint it did!WOW! Where did he get the inspiration for that? - even the real thing in C.F.Booths Ltd weren't that bad.
As for the power car 49006 before it moved to Coventry ERM that was in a different league, see attached from the ERM website.

Ah, the little known diesel version of the APT-P.
Hi KIt
actually I recently found evidence of plans for a diesel version and one for the Southern Region (would this have been Third Rail Electric??) and a version for the Channel Tunnel !
All listed in a file from 1977, sadly I only have the list of files that were stored in the CM&EE Room 59 Trent House, I hope the actual documents are safe at the RDDS.

The Silk Mill is currently closed until 2020 so it will be interesting to see if they have the model and City of Derby nameplate in the new display.
