  1. Hello again Graham

Many thanks for clarifying the above. I had read through the thread before submitting my question as l suspected the answer lay within. I did see your previous comments and photos, but as you say the O2 in question worked local Push Pull services around Yeovil area, so was not quite what l was looking for.

As l m am planning a layout based around Seaton Jct, l was hoping these locos would have been seen on the main line either as light engine moves or standing in for a failed M7s on local working to and from Exeter?

    Bob C

There are several photos in books by Derek Phillips showing O2 non push pull fitted variety operating in line which are connected to the main line to Exeter. They would would of operated on services such as the line to Sidmouth, Budleigh Salterton and Seaton on rare occasions.

As for operating on the main line I believe you wil struggle to find an evidence of this as the local services were either pulled by an S15 or a Bulleid Pacific too.

The only occasion I can think of an O2 operating on the main line to Exeter is a the Yeovil service which did once a week run all the way to Milborne Port but I've been told no photos exist of this service but it is documented in Main line to the West Part 2.

  2. Allocations of mainland O2s for May 1949, April 1950 and May 1951 tabulated below if this helps as it certainly shows a few east of Exmouth highlighted in bold

Well I did post earlier on this thread that 30182 was in fact a Yeovil town engine for a few years and posted several photos operating on the Yeovil town to Yeovil Junction push pull duty.

Prior to it being allocated Yeovil 30182 was an Eastleigh engine and posted a photo of it at Yeovil town shed still with it's Eastleigh shed code attached. The popular photos of this locomotive carrying out the RTCS special at Plymouth with the gate stock push pull set shows clearly it still has a Yeovil Town shed code fitted. So these locomotives did operate east of Exmouth and there are several photos of these locomotives in operation .

I also contacted Derek Phillips who was a driver at Yeovil Town shed during the 1950s and confirmed that 30182 was shedded there but was not the preferred choice on the shuttle service as the crews would prefer to use the 2 M7s instead so 30182 was reallocated in the mid 1950s to Plymouth as it was a redundant engine at Yeovil Town.

  3. Well the issue of derailing seems to be isolated locomotives, even with Quality Assurance inspections there will always be a few locomotives which will have problems. But do not let this distract anyone from a locomotive which has been wanted by Southern Region modellers for a while. Besides there have been worse models out there which could not deal with any curves, I own a Graham Farish BR std Mogul which if you run it backwards round any curve the valve gear locks up. It might be a quick fix to resolve the de rail issue but not any issue to boycott a model or snub it out of hand.

I am not a rivet counter or anything but the photo references used for 30182 have shown if modellers want to recreate the RCTS special to Plymstock then should note the shed code is incorrect on the locomotive. It should be 72C , a good photo is shown in Southern Branchlines by C.J Gammell page 183 and 184.

  4. This photo hopefully shows the line nicely on 30182. It is allocated at Yeovil Town in this photo. But I do have another photo showing the line just after she arrived at Yeovil Town still with her original shed code on.

  5. there was an article a few years ago in BRM about a Tower models 14XX a customer had ordered and wanted in the colours of the locomotive in the film. This included several black and white photos of the locomotive whilst filming was carried out. The finished locomotive was a very grimy green if I remember rightly but don't quote me on that with with a light shade covering the GWR lettering.

Hopefully this can be some help maybe someone knows which issue this article was in.

Failing that you could alsways use the Mainly Trains detailing set for the 14xx and use reference photos for the correct top feed.

  6. very nicely done. It's a nice simple design and not overly complex. The station does have that north cornwall look about it. Also impressed with the backscene and building applied to it. Hopefully not too long till we see more pictures of this layout. The question is when will a Bachmann n class make an appearance on tis wonderful layout as the were perfectly at home on a line like this?

  7. I built one of the Cambrian model versions of this brake van, and it was minefield of variants which did not help when attempting to build. The instructions were as clear as mud but once i took the plundge and built it it was a nice model to have, then 2 weeks later Bachmann announced they were going to release the model and I thought oh well these things happen.

I did use as reference a few photo I took of the West Somerset Railway brake Van, but I believe this one to be an ex MOD version and also the one at the Yeovil Railway centre.

  8. Thank you chaps for the advance warning.

I don't think that there was any LSWR influence in the design of this prototype. However, operational circumstances took them in number to the Withered Arm, and so they became an Era 3/4 icon all over the Southern network, including the far-flung West. Perfect behind the N class mogul, just as good behind the Q1 and T9, at home in Padstow, and alongside a Gate-stock pair.

The addition of this little gem is an essential step in the right direction for 4mm freight working, I shall be looking to place an order asap.

I believe these brake van were in fact based on a SECR brake van underframe and due to number actually they were widespread on the Southern Region.
