  1. I 'thought' the 3 Litre had a longer wheelbase but then memory does play tricks I suppose.

The 3 litre had an inline six cylinder engine, driving the rear wheels, that's why it's longer. The same engine was fitted to the MGC. People expected a Healey type sports car, but the engine was designed for saloons, with 7 main bearings for smoothness.

  2. Who remembers Skoda's on the RAC Rally? The real one that is. Won their class more times that you could shake a stick at. Another area they were good at was trials like the London/Lands End. Rear engine, good torque and good traction. And the Skoda Rapide was a cracking car. Slow in, fast out. Just don't change your mind halfway through!

What I do find a little regrettable, though, is that the majority (I'm speaking generally, rather than about the specific cars in the pictures) now have Le Mans type bodies, whereas the coachwork would originally have been much more varied and, in many ways, more interesting. I remember reading an interview with Bentley dealer Stanley Mann where he bemoaned the fact that he was having to sell some cars with covenants on them to prevent the buyers from stripping off rare and original saloon coachwork, for example, and indulging their Tim Burkin fantasies.

I couldn't agree more. Another one that comes to mind is THAT Aston. A prototype DB5, painted red, was repainted Silver Birch, fitted with a weird sunroof and launched on the big screen with a certain Sean Connery. Nowadays, it seems nearly every  DB5 is Silver Birch. The Aston Zagato though was a beautiful thing,in a rather menacing way. Not like the later ones.
