  1. Ian pinch away. Cut the porch of the shed, needs grass around the bottom then some general cluter laying around,i'm happier with how it looks know. Ray
  2. Adrian You may be right about the porch,it needs cut of, as for style of the building, i'm sure there would be building somewhere made out of planks,i got the idea for my team track from this picture of Erie 28st yard, theres a small shed, but can't tell what it's made of. It's the illusion i'm trying to create, not trying to be to specific,so as not to date the layout which makes it more flexiible for when i change railroad theme's. Point taken about crates, will leave a few new, when i buy my next batch will weather then heavily. Thanks for all your comments, keep them coming. Ray
  3. Found a old woodern shed,of a failed project, think it will do for my yard office, bit of grass around the bottom, jobs a good'un. When yo've got'a go,yo've got'a go,hope he's not looking for the end of the paper!!!!! Pete, these crate's any better, want to keep some new one's,companies do buy/build new one's for shipping, don't they??? Ray
  4. Took a photo of the Conrail local arriving to do some switching the landlord finally put his "for rent" signs up. also the team track got a couple of forklifts, they need drivers now. Progress is a bit slow at the moment, running out of detailing bits and sorting out my local exhibition, and starting on the "new layout",theres not enough time in the day. Ray P.S Nick, not this year!!
  5. Done the other building last night, single story warehouse Ray
  6. Had some spare time today,so started on the alternative buildings, which i can swap for different railroads, first done is a concrete loading ramp to swap with US pencils,(i getting to like this better than US pencils). The veiwing area is only 15" high,so when you stand back,it seems to open the layout up more,(got to think of all them crowds flocking around an American layout at a exhibition),my idea was to use the buildings as a scenic block, which i think may work on a bigger layout,i'm not so sure on a exhibition layout, the idea of a theatre type presentaion means people have to look into the layout, so building blocking there veiw may not work. Will have to have a few mates around when the other buildings done for a second opinion. Ray
  7. Andy Thanks about the kind remarks. I know what you mean about the fire escapes,i had buiilt the buildings first with no thought of fire escapes, then decided i would have fire escapes, tried building a angled one,but the stairway looked far to steep, then i found a photo of one on the net, don't know if it's on a American building (looks to be),but it fitted the bill so went with it. Prof what did you use for steam??????? Ray
  8. Rust st building all fix now, just a couple more bits of detail to do and to finish the gap along the bottom of the buildings,(one of my pet hates),run out of detail stuff again, only thing i've got left are the switch stands. photo of #9101 switching some empty coal hoppers, which are being use to transfer crushed stone up the cement branch, where they are building a new freeway Ray
  9. I'm in the hands of the Gods (exhibition managers) for that one. More fitting for Mal's post about J H Wright's 'Federal Street', i took a photo of a rather clean, Erie 'decapod' shunting the cement branch Ray
  10. Ian the beer monster want it at Barrow 2013,you'll see it there Mal High praise indeed,to be mention in the same sentance as J H Wright Thanks for all the kind remarks Ray
  11. Not done much since my last post, except build/kitbash my team track crane from a old ratio kit i had from a failed british layout (pleased i got that out of my system),just need some cable for the hook and fix to the layout at a later date (knowing me i'll knock it flying while doing other things) don't those cars need weathering,my to do list never seems to get smaller. Ray
  12. Looks like i'm going to have to watch a lot of tele/films for ideas and cockups. Done the layout sign today,to look like a American road sign (near enough that will do) just the railroad logo's to find on internet, and some wat to attach them not best photo, think auto focus has gone on the camera. Ray
  13. I don't think it matters which city it is,probably all the back alleys will look the same, won't they??? Ian don't think exhibition managers would appreciate steam coming out of the gratings, all those health and safety issuses!!!!!!!!! suppose i could use dry ice,no forget that, that means more work. Ray
  14. Once again guys thanks for all the imput, keep it coming, now just got to persuade SWMBO that we have to watch the blues brothers again. I also like watching American police dramas like "Cannon" (how sad),they always end up chasing the baddie's around downtown industrial areas and railroad yards (set dvd next time) Got a shopping list for Halifax now, think i'll struggle with most of it,but you never know. Ray
  15. Cheers guys for all the feed back, there's plenty to be going on with. What i need is vehicles that would be about between 1965/70 so i don't have to buy vehicles for each railroad theme, the road is only 15" long don't want to over crowd it with to many vehicles(2 or 3) like the idea of illegal park car or burnt out car, garbage bins, rubbish. would there be any railroad signs ? Adrian power/telphone cables was my next question, how would they get to the buildings, would they follow the railroad, how high would the poles be,baring in mind i will have to get in between them to clean the track now and then, will have to plan where they go so as not to damage them. do i have to watch the blues brothers again  one of my all time favourite films, but if i must in the name of research! Ray
  16. Couple of questions for you guys over the pond or anyone in the no. Looking down Rust st to 59th,the sidewalk seems a bit bare, would there be trash bins and fire hydrants on a small back street ? what type of road signs would i need ? Camera started working again surprising what a tap with a hammer can do!!!! Ray
  17. Got a photo's of the Erie local crossing Rust st,just before my camera packed up,"focus error" tried everything to clear it,looks like i'm shopping for a new camera at the weekend. SWMBO will love that, she knows how i hate shopping (other than for railroad stuff) Ray
  18. Just a quick up date The name of the layout as you can see by the caption is "59th AND RUST" Ray
  19. Done the last building, "US Pencils",well there maybe a woodchip silo to go with it,not sure yet? The "new layout" will be shutting down for a while (i can here you cheering),i've got a exhibition to organize. Workington 17/18 November,19 layouts, 14 traders +plus societies Come along and support us if you can May pop in now and then to keep a eye on you all,and with any up dates, but if i don;t will be back after exhibition over and out for now Ray
  20. I think there a all welded construction!!!,modeling all those old tin can is going to be the problem!!!!! Life to short for that and there's so much beer to drink,no brainer there!!!!! Ray
  21. Back to the darkside again i see, hope you've got all those rivets and bolts in the right place, i'll be counting!!!! Ray
  22. Found this photo of a trolly in the 50's which looks small, think it will be easier to get hold of the Preiser ones,it's the illusion i'm trying to create, don't think anyone will notice the size difference!! Ray
  23. Ian Can't find any space for the beer bottle, unless i make a paper one and stick on the back scene!! The only industry left to do is the small one on the front of the layout (the one with the open back),think i've got it sorted, trying to design the sign for it!! Adrian when did shopping carts start being used, does anyone make a model ?? Thanks about the a/c units, will modify when i get the rest to install. Didn't do much last night but play trains check all my building were in gauge, took a couple of photo's of the test train, which also adds a splash of colour (another job to do weathering boxcars) You may notice there are 3 crowns on now, forgot to glue them on before i took the first picture, doh!! I need a break from building model railroads,so have booked the weekend (22/23 SEPT) off with SWMBO for a luxury weekend in HALIFAX!!!(west yorkshire that is not Nova Scotia) Well there is a model railway exhibition on!,i really do no how to spoil her,eh!!! Ray
  24. Thanks guys for all the kind remarks, i'm flattered Ian it's funny how you get in to a lull, then you see or do something which kickstarts you back in to action,i usualy find having been to a exhibition, picking ideas up gives me the urge, though i've not had many lulls with this layout,i'm really enjoying building it,its been a all new ball game building everything out of card and paper. Pete still can't make my mind up about name/names,may stick with one name and just change the railroad logos for each theme or have six different name boards, will let you know when i do. Got the other big building name done today , just needs fixing to layout, this just leaves one to do (phew) next building is "Goldberger Doll" Toy Dolls,Boxcars loaded/empty, in/out once again thanks for the kind remarks Ray
  25. Got a couple of signs on the buildings to day, seeing its raining again first up is "3 Crown Storage" general storage, loaded/empty box cars in/out Next one is "Tino Tool" garden tools, boxcar loaded/empty in/out both building are fix to the layout, also cut the hole through to the single track fiddleyard/headshunt done this to help ease switching and for when i run my budd car passenger train may do last 2 tomorrow depending on the weather!!
