  1. Congratulations Paul, I also have the 24009 and I like it very much indeed.
Apart from the 24009 I have the Br Blue 24035 DCC Sound from Bachmann which is still a nice loco.
The underframes of the 24's are very different and also the colour which is plain black with 24035 and some anthracite grey with the 24009.

  2. Nice! How does the 24 haulage compare to the Bacchy versions ? - never had any issues with them in that department....

Bachmann's are also hauling these 12 coaches without any trouble just like the 87035

I think the SLW would do the same but I want to leave the bufferbeam details in place.

I ordered my SLW with sound but without "supercap".
If the track is reasonable clean it seems to be ok and my Bachmann's don't have supercaps either.

Nice video! I love the sound of Sulzers in the morning.....

    Thanks Phil !
You have a nice channel too.

Compare it with the sound of my Bachmann 24035 (white handrails) and Bachmann 25286

I'd say the 25286 doesn't come far behind the SLW and the 24035 comes third.

Having just got my D5082 today the new sound functions are superb will just have to send them my others for a reblow.

I was able to make a video of my 24009 on the layout of my good friend.

We still have to sort out all the functions next time because it is a bit overwhelming.

I agree it sounds quite good to be honest.

    Cheers, Jan

I got me research livered sound 24 for Crimbo and quite simply this is the best diesel model I have seen ever!!! Its standards are miles ahead of any Bachmann, Hornby ,Heljan offering and at the £250 price point, which seem to be the benchmark price point for sound locos, it's brilliant! The level of detail and the clever function of the cab lights really shows the attention to detail in the development of this loco. It is simple light years ahead of any other BR diesel model.

I have a large collection of every class of 00 BR Blue models produced going back to my 1978 Hornby class 29 and it's quite startling just how far the standards of models have progressed. hopefully the new Deltic will changing this model for the best yet produced in my collection.

I would heartily recommend anyone to purchase this loco as you won't be disappointed and you will see the value of cost in all it's detail from the packaging to every aspect of the loco. SLW hurry up and do a other loco soon:)

Agreed Mike, I will see and hear it running probably this Tuesday (Br Blue 24009).

Bachmann loses this battle and indeed my 24035 doesn't look as brilliant as this SLW 24009 although they make pretty good models like their Class 40159

Hornby comes not far behind in detail however with the recent Class 87035 and Lord Nelson.
Hornby's 87035 with Legomanbiffo sound was about the same price as my 24009.
That sound doubled it more in price but it was justified I think.

With Heljan I am a bit wary ...........

    Greetings, Jan

  6. I have noticed that my 24009 has NO white round fuel gauge on the larger tank on neither side of the loco unlike what the colour drawing shows on their brochure.

I can live with (or without) it however I can't imagine they have made a mistake by omitting that gauge :-)

My Bachman 24035 does have a gauge on one side.

That’s a great comparison shot for showing the subtle differences between them which helps explain where the Bachmann one goes awry. A combination of errors. I built new cabs for my one, better but not as good as these which are of course ‘there’ in all senses. Maybe one day I will be able to justify getting one but at present other priorities take precedent.

Many thanks for sharing the shot.

    Thank You Izzy,

I thought it not very necessary to explain which one is the Bachmann and which one is the SLW :-)

However I will keep the Bachmann because I think it is still an acceptable 24 with an acceptable sound.

It was Bachmann's very first 24 with DCC Sound and back then I was quite impressed !

You can watch it here :

I also want to keep the Bachmann as a workhorse for pulling wagons where I'd rather leave all those buffer beam details of my SLW alone.

    Merry Christmas, Jan

  8. See Charlie's opening post on this thread.

There is no space inside for a 23mm speaker. My kit came with a pair of sugarcubes.

In that case I presume my 87 should have a sugarcube or a pair of sugarcubes as well, but I will ask Amanda when I speak to her

  9. I got the joke and also thought the sounds spot on.  Is that with the "standard" 23mm speaker or have you used something else?  If the 23mm then they are really good.

    Hi Mark,

I went through my email communication with Amanda and I saw she has mentioned the word "Sugar Cube" speaker.

I don't know what kind of speaker that might be and it still isn't sure if such a speaker has been installed in my 87 (see below).

If i find out more I will let you know.

"I use Model Yard to do my DCC work including not only installing but fully testing and have never had a returned loco once they have worked it.

They charge $80 for the work and this would include me supplying them with a Sugar Cube speaker where necessary"

  10. I got the joke and also thought the sounds spot on.  Is that with the "standard" 23mm speaker or have you used something else?  If the 23mm then they are really good.

    Hi Mark,

To be very honest I wouldn't have a clue what speaker has been installed.

I could check what speaker is inside by removing the body or have my well-skilled friend Tony to do it.

However I am pretty reluctant to remove a body from an unknown brandnew locomotive if it is not really necessary.

I have purchased this 87 from AJMRailways (Amanda Jane) and all I have asked her was to have Legomanbiffo sound installed.

She has outsourced that job to a company called Model Yard near her business in Yorkshire.

Because I have NOT asked Amanda for a specific speaker it may be very well possible that just the standard 23mm speaker has been installed !

If I get in touch with Amanda again I will ask her about the speaker however.

    Cheers, Jan

  11. I have a BR blue Bachmann 47404 with sound for a couple of years already, that has gone through a lot of trouble.

The name Hadrian is on both sides, Hadrian must have been not such a nice guy I am afraid :nono:

First of all I noticed an too visible paint stain on one the sides when I came home with it.

Bachmann UK has replaced the body under warranty, I did send the whole loco to them as removing the body myself did not seem like such a straight-forward job :nono:

Major problem was the utter annoying oblique "hanging" of the loco when you looked at it head-on.

Unfortunately I noticed that AFTER I got my loco back from Bachmann UK.

However I lived with that problem 3 years but was never really happy with this otherwise very nice loco.

It was wobbling from left to right but worse of all it did NOT come to a standstil upright but oblique.

Finally I decided to send it off to a Bachmann repairer in Melbourne which was a great idea !.

Both bogie towers including wheels and bogieframe altogether has been replaced and the result is TERRIFIC (see picture).

The only thing is that the pipes on the bogies are now black with the rest of bogieframe while originally they were white, but I can live perfectly with that.

Another thing to be utmost careful with are the breakshoe assemblies at the inner end of the bogieframes.

They are very prone to breaking off.

When I got my 47 back one was missing but luckily Bachmann was able to send me a new bogieframe.

Now has anyone ever tried to REMOVE a bogie frame from its chassis ??

Well, removing the body is just a piece cake in comparison.

You need to be some kind of Houdini in order to achieve that in a proper way (virtually impossible without demolishing the whole bogie tower I think). So I decided to remove one of those break assemblies from the bogieframe Bachmann had send me and simply glue it on the existing bogieframe.

I finally feel satisfied and happy with my 47 after 3 years, it is running well, and the sound is great, but it took a long way.

And I am sure that driver in the cab will agree with me.

He must have felt like "hanging in a curve" all the time !

Greetings, have a good X-Mas (I most certainly will after this !).
