are they set to  push button??

Good point. I’ve yet to check all those settings. (I’m still learning the full capabilities) having said that, I put Rails Heljan 18000, KR GT3 and a Road and Rails Loksound V5 fitted Kernow D600 full their full F sequences. Everything worked as per the F map. So I don’t see any conflicts at present.

Having had another go with the dongle yesterday, it appears via my Lenz system that you can only operate the first six functions (F0 - F5). Anything above F5 doesn't do anything. Not sure if that's because I'm using the dongle via a Lenz system or if it's the same if you use the dongle via the Hornby Elite. If anyone else has set up and is using the dongle, it would be good to know if they have the same problem or not and what system they are using. I'll drop Hornby a note and see what they have to say. Will add, this is the case whether it's a sound decoder or a non-sound decoder.

Yep. All mine are working fine, up to F29. Really impressed you can customise the F maps, it’s so much easier than trying to remember all the different maps for each loco-but like going from DOS to windows lol

There is a bug that only allows the first function map to be imported. They are working on a fix, but in the meantime here is a bit of a convoluted work-around issued to the test team.

    • Unassign any locomotives from the HM7040 in the Manage Device screen.

    • Create a new 'Temp' vehicle in the Engine Shed.

    • Assign the HM7040 to it, ensuring that this is the only locomotive the 7040 is assigned to.

    • Tap on Settings.

    • Tap on Profiles.

    • Find your chosen function map.

    • Plug in the HM7040 / 'Temp' loco.

    • Tap on Import Function Map.

    • Go to Locomotive Settings of the 'Temp' locomotive.

    • Tap on Export Function Map.

    • Save the Function Map with a given name.

    • Go to Engine Shed.

    • Tap on the correct locomotive you wish for the newly exported function map to be applied to.

    • Tap on Import Function Map.

    • Choose the Function Map you recently exported.

    • This will install the function map for another locomotive.

    • Repeat this process using the 'Temp' locomotive with other profiles, exporting each Function Map out and re-importing them back in to the correct locomotive.

    • Once complete, go to Manage Devices, tap on HM7040 and assign the HM7040 to all locomotives you wish to control with it.

Once it is fixed it will follow the previously documented method.

Crikey! Erm, I think I’ll wait for the bug fix. One further question, if I may, can I go ahead and add all my non Hornby sound chips (as additional locos associated to the Dongle)? The ability to customise the F icons in the TXS app is BRILLIANT, as it’s a real pain to try and remember all their individual different function maps. The ability to customise each loco with its own individual icons for function maps is a massive benefit. What I don’t want to happen is do all that work (30+ individual maps) then find that data has been lost in an App fix/update?

Dongle how to guides here https://uk.Hornby.com/hm7000/hm-dcc-guides

The TTS profiles referred to are simply the function key assignments to save you having to type them in. You cannot import a TTS sound file.

Set up your legacy locos in the Engine Shed then assign them all to the dongle. They appear on the control screen loco ribbon same as the HM7K locos. The only limitation is you cannot read CVs over the air as they are commanded thru' the rails as per normal.

Right. I'm with you. And thanks for the advice - very useful. However:

When I follow the procedure to load the function map, it's only giving me the option of assigning to the Dongle, not a choice of the other locos assigned to the dongle in the Engine Shed. e.g.

"Tap on Profiles. Tap on the Profile panel of the Function Map you wish to import. In the Decoder Selection box, tap on Select Now > Select your Locomotive from the Decoder Selection pop-up box"   - But it only gives me the option of TXS Dongle - #1 (not other locos assigned to the Dongle).

    Alternatively:

If I go to an assigned loco in the Engine Shed and select import function map , it only has an option of "Default (HM700)" ?

So I cant work out how to access/upload the individual function maps for multiple {different} TTS files for different locos assigned to the Dongle in the Engine Shed.

Now that profiles are available for TTS decoders are available, so that you can control these loco’s via the dongle, are Hornby going to do the same for their earlier sound decoders (Loksound) that were released in models that had the XS suffix.

My dongle arrived! Plugged into my Elite and popped a TTS cl37 on and away we go. But, I’ve a lot to think/learn about how it functions. The App sees the dongle as a resettable device (like one loco{chip}?) So I guess? Other locos can be added-without having to re-enter the loco address each time?  Anyway, for thickos like me a comprehensive manual would be useful. I await others wisdom!
Don't get me wrong, I think the dongle makes TXS even more amazing. It’s a great system-once I understand it!

    Hi,

Just received my 4 VEP in SWT. The power car may be the heaviest RTR OO EMU power car at 427 grammes.

I haven't got a way of measuring OO speeds at the moment but here is a plot of current vs. DC voltage for the power car (with interior lights):

I'm going to dig my vernier callipers out to measure the wheel flanges and other wheel dimensions.

    Regards

    Nik

My Southern arrived today! Yep, the MBS is a bit of a monster. It thinks it’s a Heljan cl128! I’m impressed!

Some not particularly brilliant shots of the SWT one on the bench. The new style of packaging was a bit of a surprise but at least it made it easier to remove the models. The old foam tray was quite a tight fit. Though it's odd that the motor coach comes in its own packaging.

The colours look pretty good to me, be interesting to see how they compare to Bachmanns 3-CEP.

Still missing the door handle (grab) on the refurbished (added) saloon door! But overall sounds a great improvement. Just fitted TXS to my other B+G, NSE and blue. Can’t wait for my Southern!

Just had a battle with mine to get the body off to fit a dcc chip. The instructions state to unclip the body from the sides of the chassis but at least some of the clips are part of the glazing and are under the chassis. They are part of the glazing and I will try to show this in the following pictures. You can see some of the clips in the four square holes on the underside of the chassis.

Just had the same, this afternoon when I was fitting a TXS! It’s a real s*d. Eventually forced it off, amazed the clips didn’t snap. It pulled some of the window glazing out, but I’ve found it pops back in-if you refit from the top of the window (the opening lights). Not at all sure why it had to be this hard!

Not quite so. You only need access to Hornby servers to fetch the sound profiles. Operating on bluetooth is local to you, though one wonders if the app would still function if there was no Hornby Towers server to login into to start with.

But in that worst case scenario (hopefully wont happen) I'd just flip all the TXS decoders to DCC and they would continue to function as any other DCC sound chip. If that were to happen, hopefully somebody else would pick up the "format" and market TXS as a discrete system in it's own right.

  10. Tried out both my new 110 DMUs today. As previously commented, new motor, but the other bogies are exactly the same. The new motor is *sort* of Limby, it’s actually different, small can motor at the top of a plastic tower (I guess the gears are inside) so a variation on the previously seen  Limbys (73,31,92) etc

Smooth and sensible top speed. Slightly noisier than {73 etc} but good slow speed control. Would have been nice to have NEM though. It’s clearly an economy update. But still fair value, when one looks at some rather more expensive DMU models.

I've tried it and followed instructions (using Hornby eLink power supply only).

When it works, it is great, but I've had 10 of these chips so far and 4 were dud (one only worked in one direction before it died and I cannot get shot of the thing from the app, one made made whistle pop sounds on the speaker when connecting and refused to work, two have had no bluetooth signal what so ever).

In 40 years of buying Hornby products, these seriously affect my confidence. The potential is there but reliability has not been in my case.

I’m on 26 installs now, only had one dud, so sorry to hear your problems. I think it’s a vast improvement over any current DCC system, let’s just hope the sound files further increase in diversity.

So does the Triang Metro Cammel DMU, They are all old.

As they are spending money on upgrading the VEP, updating it to similar levels as current spec, just as several others are doing surely makes sense… ?

in a few years the VEP may find itself out of date to contempories and need a 2nd (or 3rd) round of upgrades.

Looks like they are not - just like Bachmann are not on their (southern emus), but at £362.99 vs £589.99 rrp {4VEP vs 4 TEP)

They started with the 117/121, then subsequently the 150 and them moved on to the 158.
    They all have underfloor motors.

    EFEs 144 has underfloor motors.

The 4DD from KR has a mostly subsurface motor.

Dapols Bubble car / GW railcar is underfloor

Realtracks 142 and 156 are underfloor.

i’m pretty sure the Heljan 104 is

The industry is moving on.  putting a lump of metal around the motor reminds me of the Dapol 150.

There are some clever solutions, Pikos EN57 has a hidden underfloor motor, they made the seats cast for to add weight for example..

Yes indeed. But I was simply pointing out that for 3rd Rail units, CEP, BEP, HAP, EPB, 2H etc, that’s a whopping great big motor shroud on show….(and especially noticeable in the CEP {R})

Bachmann have moved on from this, even KR Models 4DD has a motor below floor…

The videos last year of the 755 show Hornby have gone that route too.

i saw this at Warley last year and it didnt register at the time this is what they’d done…but when you see the two side by side it stands out, which means when you couple 4 coaches together this may stand out too.

    i’m unsure now.

Bachmann haven’t moved on with the refurbished CEP and the new 4TEP is well over £500!

We'll have to wait and see what size these things are when Hornby start producing them with smaller available components..

But when and if is still a big IF as updates seem to be quite infrequent now the launch had happened. I'm hoping we get more profiles soon to keep up with the projected list and then we do get a new run which may reduce the size to make this more useable. Not just in other manufacturers trains but also in a lot of hornbys own current and back catalogue.

Agreed! I see they have sold out of TXS21pin now. HM7000 does need a push, with new profiles and available stock (and the Dongle) to get "back in the race"
