  1. Hi there,

Hoping this is the correct place to be posting this query...

I'm wondering whether or not anyone would have any information on the subject of the availability of 4mm scale passenger coaches that ran on the Isle of Wight railway network anytime between the 30s and 60s, preferably. I'm beginning to build a small layout of a station set there and am not sure if I'll be able to get hold of some stock to run on it or if I'll have to scratch-build / modify existing available models. The more prototypical correct, the better I suppose.

Thanks in advance for any help,

    Andy.

  2. I may well end up doing the ballast with as you suggest, but I want to fix the track down as well, without pins.  I'll have a go on the bits that will be hidden using the different methods to find one that has the right balance of ease, speed and looks.  Obviously looks is going to be most important, but the others will have some bearing.

On that note, I'll be listening any suggestions of how to ballast 180 feet of running line from anyone who has any.

    Hi,

The way I personally would go about doing it is not spending all that money on pins as you suggest but also not spending it on too much PVA. I'd glue the track down using the PVA glue sparingly and let it dry fully. That'll save on pins. Then use the "PVA+water+dash of washing up liquid for good flow into all the gaps" to set the ballast in place after you've spent six hours tidying it up around the sleepers. Trust me, that will give you the best looking and most realistic look.

It's probably worth spending some time on the ballasting or you'll look back on it later and wish you'd done it differently. Especially as you've invested so much time and money on all that track.

    Hope that helps,

    Andy.

  3. Thanks Andy, I'm really happy with the greenery, it's certainly brightened things up a lot.

I have 3 fully running 08s n a scrap 08 that makes an appearance under taro and an 09 which is pretty much the resident shunter, can't get enough of then to be honest, quiet fancy a intercity livery 08 if I'm honest.

    Cheers

My 08 is in the Intercity livery, named Piccadilly. Its a Hornby model that I got about a year ago. I'd really like a Mainline livery gronk (like your 09) to match my tractor in Mainline blue. The Mainline livery is one of my favourites. Who is your Mainline 09 by, or was it resprayed? What livery is your scrap 08 in?

  4. Hi Andy, Not a problem except that I cant set it up at home now as there is not enough room in my 9ft Den. The next time I will have it errected will be to check it out ready for its next outing at the Misdland Railex on 11th ./ 12th August so it will be set up in the club room a couple of weeks before for a clean and a running ssession to check it all still works. If I can find a full lengthe pic in my archivers I will post it on here for you so keep an eye out.. You never know another R.M Member may have taken one at a show. Model Rail did a photo shoot just before Christmas but I don't think there was a full length one in with those. All the best Andy, (the other one ha ha ).

    OK, thanks Andy no.1 :)

    Andy.

  5. Nice weathering on those TTAs and the Limpet. I must get round to weathering my two Bachmann TTAs soon. Mine are in the Green BP livery. I'm thinking of fading it, and adding spillage marks as you've done. I've been trying to research what livery the TTAs were in to replenish the TMD refuelling facilities in the 90s. Was it this Mobil livery?

The TTAs will look good on Millwood (or is it Mill Wood?)

    Thanks,

    Andy.

  6. On my fiddle yard I only have one line coming from the main scenic board, my dad suggested two Y points to give a few lines that I can have trains/locos ready to go, if you look through the great there should be a pic of the current fiddle yard, the new version will shorten it slightly but it's not as if I'm running long trains into the scenic board ha ha

What are you doing with yours??

I see. Well, the longest thing entering my depot via tracks will be the Class 60 :)

I also only have one line because I figured that it wouldn't look realistic to have 2 lines coming in to a TMD which only has 3 sidings and a headshunt. On my fiddle yard I'll probably simply have a 3 way point with a siding coming off each junction. I don't want to pack my fiddle yard, which will be only 1' x 2', because I need decent room for the other equipment like controller and point control, etc. However I don't like picking up my stock to make space for the next loco departing from the scenic section - it'll just slow everything down.

Anyways, good luck with the upcoming work on Deeping Lane Depot.

  7. Thanks Andy, it's always worth trying to add little details that make things unique

    I agree with you.

What actually needs to be improved on your fiddle yard? I ask because I'm going to start constructing mine this weekend.

  8. Hi Andy I basically drew it out to scale on a bit of paper, folded it up and soaked it in PVa glue and folded it and screwed it up a little then draped it over the side of the brake van very easy to do with very effective results

Ok, thanks, I might try it :) I does look very effective.

  9. Another superb layout of yours, I see :) I suppose that not having a sky-painted backboard makes operation a lot more clear for the operators. Are the figures wearing the high-vis jackets from the Bachmann range and are the CCTV cameras scratch-built? I'm currently on the hunt for figures (and CCTV cameras) myself.

    Andy.
