  1. Hi Rob

What I do is first is get all the track and points cut to the correct lengths etc. and dummy lay it to check. I then next remove it, coat the area where the track will be laid with raw PVA glue, relay the track onto the glue, positioned it all correctly, hold it down with the large coloured notice board pins. As I am using SMP finescale track the sleeper depth is shallower than that on commercial normal track ie PECO, Gaugemaster. Because of this I use extra fine granite ballast. This is just poured over the track with the PVA glue underneath and pressed down. It is then left for 24 hours and I then, using a very soft bristled 4" brush, remove and brush up the surplus ballast. I then have a small hand vac which is used to get the final loose ballast up. All this ballast is sieved ready for reuse. Any areas where a little more ballast is needed or has been missed has more ballast laid and secured in position with some diluted PVA mixed with a little Fairy Liquid and applied either using a dropper or a large syringe.

After this is all done the whole track and ballast are spray painted to give the required effect. This can be seen on my other layouts listed on my thread.

At present due to a big photo shoot this next weekend for Hornby Magazine this layout has gone on the back burner for a while and am just working on buildings. No doubt my 'photographer' Jamie will be recording all of this in due course.

    Hope this helps

    Peter

Yes that all makes sense now and the results it produces are very good!

    Thanks, Rob

  2. First off, I would just like to declare my admiration for this layout, looks as if this will be an excellent layout!

The ballasting is very effective and looks very good. I see that you are completly covering the track with ballast first. After this what is your method for securing the ballast in place and removing the excess ballast?

    Thanks, Rob

  3. Thanks for the comment Rob, have you weathered any other locos as I would love to see them, thanks for the comments

    Cheers

not yet, me and my dad originally were n gauge runners, but have just made a start in OO and have 5 locomotives now, but not yet made an attemp at weathering any of them, wouldn't know where to start haha. Any tips?

    cheers

  4. That looks like a good plan you have come up with their Rob.

haha cheers i had originally designed something like this but bigger and with an end to end main line at the back. I only had space for this sort of plan at my mums house but she said no so i have had to turn to these baseboards.

  5. Hi everyone,

this is my first thread on RMweb and is going to be about a fictional modern image TMD in OO gauge i am creating from 2 old baseboards from an old n gauge layout me and my dad used to have. I hope to fully detail the layout and in time it would be a dream of mine to enter the exhibition circuit.

The first job for me and my dad to complete is to add fold out legs to each baseboard and sort out how were going to attach each baseboard together.

This so far is the plan i have come up with but it is most likely to change over time.

The baseboard sizes are 42x19 and 36x19 giving a total size of 78x19 when together.

Any comments and advice are welcome,

    thank you for reading, Rob.
