  1. Hello,
Has anyone who owns a Heljan Southern liveried Manning Wardle managed to fit the extra pipework that is included in the detail pack?
I can see from photos of the prototype how it is meant to go but there does not seem to be any obvious way of securing it.
The Heljan instructions don't show anything only about removing some lugs!

  2. If an extra auto trailer was added and it faced the same way as the initial trailer, both coaches would run together with the loco at one end. If it faced the opposite way to the original trailer, it would not be possible to couple the mechanical linkage and so it would have to go at the other end of the loco. At least that is my understanding of W/Region practice.

    Thanks Coachmann that makes sense.

  3. Very impressive service from Ian today at Warley. I took my Hornby 08 with me to the show today to hand over to him to get it reblown with his sound. I expected to have it posted back to me within the next few weeks but when I handed it over he said to come back before the end of the show as he would have it done for me ready to take home! A big thankyou to Ian for the great service. Been running it tonight and it sounds amazing.

The third Garratt turned up and has run in for a full hour in both directions. No problems this time. Will do a longer sound video at some point when i get a chance. Best wishes. Colin

  6. Colin,

This fault that you have described has happened to me on numerous occasions now, indeed, with 47975 the front motor 'Locked up' and was returned to Hattons, then a few days ago, the rear motor 'Locked up' this fault appears to only happen on the last batch of releases, all my Garratt's from the first batch seem fine, I must also say that the staff at Hattons have always been superb with me in dealing with returns, I have also asked in an earlier post about Howes sound for the BG, I would also like to compare it to the Olivia's sound chip, but, for the time being I'm more than happy with Olivia's.

I hope all is well with your replacement Garratt when it arrives.

    Bob,

There are many, as you properbly know, weathering professionals out there, I first met Steve Johnson at Warley a few years ago and his weathering skills impressed me so much that I have entrusted him with my models ever since and believe me he's done god knows how many for me, I havn't  the skill or the nerve to weather an expensive model such as the Garratt, I tend to stick with someone I know who will bring my models to life and that gentleman is Steve Johnson.

To be honest, I was very disappointed with Heljan's factory weathering, I will hopefully, get round to posting some pictures of my weathered Garratts  on here in the not to distant future.

Thanks Brian. Hopefully the next garret should be ok. My dads run both his on my layout and both have been fine. Ive ordered a howes chip ready for its return as i have had quite a few from them in the past and they are normally good.i plan to do a video at some point.

  7. My garratt arrived yesterday while i was at work. I started to run it in on rolling roads and after ten minutes the rear motor stopped working so its on its way back to Hattons. Congratulations to Hattons on their customer service as they replied within half an hour with a parcel label to send it back. Looking forward to the replacement arriving. Outof interest has anyone fitted a howes sound chip.? Ive seen the olivia trains offering and wondered if anyone had compared them.

  8. Don't you mean 'push' it.... That's the usual proceedure I understand, so the inspection people can see the road without a loco being in the way.

    Dave Franks.

    I do indeed!

  9. Mickey Mouse 2-6-0. 2MT...ability to work tender first. Bachmann do one.Just one suggestion.

Whatever was available I expect within reason. I've seen photos of an LMS 2P 4-4-0 and also a Mucky Duck Ivatt 4.

    Hello Colin,

As previously stated, you would be safe with an Ivatt Class 2 2-6-0, a Standard Class 2 2-6-0 (see link) and by then, a Sulzer Type 2 (class 24 or 25).  I haven't seen many pictures of them paired with anything else until much later.

    Alun

Thanks for the suggestions. I have a 2mt so will use that to haul it.

    Best wishes

  10. Thanks for that, when our 128 Specialist speaker units come out, August ish! We will be doing some RTR Weathered ones! the speaker/cab mouldings will be available separately!

    Ian & Charlie.

I will hold off ordering a sound chip until these come out.

  11. The last of the four Kernow commissions has arrived.  I'll pass on the re-issue of the blue one at this stage as with one mainstream "pristine" one as well I now have a total of five Dapol Westerns and a fleet of ten in total.  That's enough for now!

Three of five have had the "Stiff screw" issue which has been readily overcome in all cases by removing the other three screws and gently prising the body away from the frame which brings the fourth screw with it but does no harm.  Four have required tiny amounts of moulding flash to be rubbed off the bogie suspension to prevent that snagging on curves.  All five have required the leading brake rods to be trimmed to prevent those catching on the tank placed behind the front-end valence.  That is another invisible modification.  I have still failed to fit lifting lugs to the pristine loco; they are quite simply too small for me to manage.  That loco has had some light weathering applied here and two of the Kernow ones have had a tiny amount of detail added just to vary the effect of their superb weathering a little.

All four Kernow ones have had haedcodes fitted internally but the other wears its stick-ons outside the "glass" - at least for now.  All have two-man crews added, a single coupler added at the trailing end and are "one-way" locos requiring turning to change direction when hauling a train.  Some of the Heljan ones have couplers both ends for shunting work.  Double heading remains possible with a 42 or 22 by placing the smaller loco (which also has two couplers)  "inside".

I have had virtually no running issues.  Two locos have a very slight wobble at one bogie which is barely noticeable when one allows for the out-of-scale "rock and roll" sometimes encountered on models.  The others have none.  They haul 10 Mk1 coaches or the equivalent freight loading very happily and will manage 12 on full power.  Hauling a full prototype rake of 40 clay "hoods" is no problem.  Slow speed control with any sort of load or light engine is good  and if my track and power supply was better it might be excellent.

Fitting the brake rods was a little fiddly; fitting the works plate to the pristine loco was as fussy.  Fitting the name and number plates to that loco was quite easy thanks to the faint guide lines provided.

Several months after the first arrived and with most having run quite a few hours in traffic now I remain delighted with them.  I'll stage a line-up and post a picture or two when there's some decent weather.

Just out of interest. You mention you have fitted crews to your locos. Which company did you get yours crews from.

    Best wishes colin
