    It reminded me of a photo I once saw in a magazine of a brand new 1/1 scale Rock Island Railroad boxcar in the USA that had been lettered "ROCK ISALND".

     

    Does anyone know of any more examples of railway spelling mistakes?

     

  2. Part of the issue in newsprint and to an extent broadcast TV is that there are a lot fewer reporters, writers or actual journalists writing original copy. Souch of what we see/ read is from Associated Press, Reuters, and local newspapers. Editorial or owner control has a strong steering influence. 

     

    The biggest issue I see in the hobby is that we are as a rule lacking in Alphas - people who will say "Yes I'm a model railway enthusiast. Got a problem with that?   Pete Waterman is not a shrinking violet and I cannot see him accepting some of the abuse and scorn I hear of others suffering.

    With this hobby being such a web of smaller interests and preferences, can we really tolerate punters being so militant towards each other in the name of *insert toy train maker here*?

     

    A visit to a Facebook group or similar will find you downed with accusations of lying if you even dare share your rightful disdain towards quality or customer service of a particular manufacturer, the reports of quality issues, breakages or lackluster customer service being viewed as trends not worthy of notice. I became entangled in this sort of attitude earlier and thought it shocking that genuine complaints and a gag lead to abuse within minutes, with passive aggressive suggestions and remarks received from more influential users from publishing and manufacturing. It wasn't a good look, only making me feel terribly uneasy even if the whole saga was initially hilarious.
     

    It hurts the hobby at least in the retail part, very well playing into the changing of buying habits from retailer to direct. Not to mention, the perhaps jaded admiration means that issues some companies would get crucified for (Hornby, Bachmann and Heljan are still blasted about mazak rot on 20+YO locos) end up dismissed and forgotten due to favoritism.

     

    A growing demographic that no longer wishes to hold our suppliers accountable should be discussed more and discouraged. Fixing brand new items has become commonplace with returning seen as too much hassle, even when pre-paid postage slips are supplied. I may be exaggerating, but considering the risks? I dunno about yourselves, I find it terrifying.

     I think the issue with aggressive defenders/accusers to which you mention is a social media issue, more than a model issue. There are always reviews in the main modelling magazines and although "options may differ" I don't think all reviewers can be "bought". 

    As regards fixing defects in models, it depends. A faulty item is a faulty item, whether a washing machine, model loco or anything else.  I cannot think anyone would accept poor quality without redress. However if you buy a limited run and it is faulty, then if there is not a replacement you would only get a refund. If you feel you can make good the defect to keep the limited edition model then fair enough. 

     

    Going back to the original post, I recall an item on radio four - the country which has the most people who hate the UK is .... the UK". It applies to model railways. We can be the hobbies worst ambassadors.

As regards child protection, which is essential for reassurance it is not a huge problem for clubs to access and download policies from regulating bodies, other longer established organisations, and for charities and volunteers in many cases a PVG (protection of vulnerable groups ) certificate is not chargeable.  With a bit of planning, organisation and forethought, it is not necessary for everyone in a club to be certificated. It does mean that say juniors night is on a separate night or day and only with vetted personnel or parents/guardians. 

     

     There is a lot of pearl clutching from some at the thought of child protection, which is more worrying.

  5. Do you know the area or the railway company that you are intending to model? A number of the former companies have associations, oh such as the Glasgow and south western railway association, or the great eastern as mentioned. These associations have a wealth of plans of station buildings, signal boxes, engine sheds, etc. 

     

    Many such associations have Zoom meetings as well as face to face meetings, ideal for overseas enthusiasts to keep in the loop. 

  6. There appears to be a strong tendency to catastrophise in many parts of the media  and the "model railways is about to fall" is a great by line. 

    The example that comes to me is the vandalism at Stamford. It could do easily have been a "crossed arms, frowns" and generated a "poor train spotters, innit a shame, kids these days". No - whether it was media wise members, or good pr background they turned a bad story to a more "we can do it" and that generated the positivity and support.

There are two manufacturers of kits  (one of which has I believe bought the kits or etched from an earlier manufacturer) whose kits are either enlargements of 4mm kits or are scratch building aids. I'm not saying they are bad kits or bad companies simply that they have their challenges. Some kit builders will say they will not touch them as they require a lot of fettling. 

    Often we are told to "Be nice" with small operatives in the hobby sector. They are one person businesses, they are often a sideline etc. I'd agree in most instances, but failure to produce with no communication is not justifiable. An email/phone call/letter does not take any time. Even medical reasons can be brief "Joe Stiggins unwell - I'll be in touch an a month or so". Not difficult. 

    A good builder will have a backlog and you may have to wait, but worth it in the end. 

    Have you looked at the Gauge O guild website for kit builders?

  8. A very touching article and one that hopefully can help others in a similar situation, personally and professionally. Other articles on the benefits of a hobby which exercises and stimulates the brain from many, including Steve fay are excellent and should be taken on board by medical professionals. From my professional.experience in primary care, medical professionals do. The issue is convincing social service "allies" who seem to have a defined agenda.  I and my colleagues do our best to convince them into the therapeutic effects of railway modelling.  Sadly I cannot see this happening as successfully as it should. 

  9. I've been using a gauge master super shuttle on my dc plank, following an article in BRM. The article said the shuttle was only for DC as "DCC modellers had their own system". Now I am dipping into DCC is there a guide as to how I can use a shuttle system on DCC?

    Would a series where a group of successful model railway builders constructed a model layout(s) for groups who might benefit from the enjoyment of a model railway ( health and therapeutic benefits) make good television and advertise revenue generation? 

     

    We know that there are mental health benefits from having a hobby and the skills and challenges that model railways bring tick many boxes. Steve fay of this parish has written about this, articles in the gauge o gazette corroborate this. The well known modellers in Pete Waterman's show have mentioned incidents from their past whether Jools Holland recreating family shops and properties, eddi Izzard and their father giving a present to his mother, Simon in the Hornby show and his childhood - there's a back story in many cases. 

     

    Nursing home residents, hospitals community locations - mens sheds etc as locations. 

     

    TV series from the US where a team of builders restore/rebuild a home for Veterans/people living with various challenges and disabilities, even here with professional landscapers building gardens are clearly popular. 

     

    Is this an idea which would work? 

     

    I am aware from various articles interviewing manufacturers that websites such as this as well as other media are noted. No doubt they get lots of "dear Mr Hornby please make a model of the midland Paget loco it's dead good and you'd sell millions I know. Well I'd buy it and my mate Kevin would so... " 

     

    Is this reasonable?

    What I have noticed about TV programmes is that German TV often shows influential people (high-ranking politcians etc) showing their layouts - whereas a British politican would be well advised to keep off the subject of railways or model railways because of this prejudice by the British media.  Portillo only gets away with it because he's given up hope of future high office, and I assume he's getting a decent remuneration as well as the opportunity to travel the world's railways on expenses.

    I believe there is a sitting MP (currently) who is a keen modeller. I think he represents a Kent or Essex constituency. 

  12. It was a shame we did not see Francis' layout completed. The trackplan and concept, especially if one of these automatic train reverser gizmos would give an entertaining watch the train (tease the cat) to attract interest. It would allow the introduction of sidings at a later date to experience the "joy of shunting"....
