  1. DoG is being quoted at £139.99 on Hornby's own website...

Thanks, I went by the post on the "2014 Announcements" thread here. I believe that at the start prices were not confirmed so there were changes.

  2. Whether or not the TTS one is the higher spec or Railroad model, I don't recall seeing any confirmation one way or the other.

They are the higher spec variant.

It's immediately noticeable from the price of the models. Hornby did say that the new TTS sound would add 25 quid to the model. So if you compare the A4 and A3 to the P2, A1 and DoG you will get your answer :)

A3 and A4 sell at an MRP of 99.99

P2, DoG and A1 sell at an MRP of 154.99

    Cheers!

  3. You've done a lovely job!!!

This is something Hornby could have easily done for an RTR model but their lack in being able to plan properly has taken them down. If they felt that we had a problem with a price they could have done two things
    - Check the price themselves, because we know for a fact that their models are over-priced (it's a hard thing to do, but if they do a good job and do their home work properly then they would know how to get a model to sell well)
    - Give us a quality product that was worth the price

There are a lot of inconsistencies with Design-Clever. If you look at the 2BIL, 2HAL then DC has worked very well. Even the EP samples of the Drumond Class 700 looks nice. The P2 looks fairly good. The DoG could have easily been much better. The DC wagons are just OK and the Mk1s are pretty good for their price.

Regarding Hornby's pricing strategy I have no clue about that. The 2014 releases of the Class 60 and 31 are 155 quid and more RRP.

  4. Good news, a pre-production sample has now arrived  :locomotive:  It will be on show at the Bristol O Gauge show on 26th January if you want to see it. I won't be posting any pictures here until then at least.

Since I am not in the UK I will wait for your images!!!

  5.

I've no issue with Hattons but I have always know them to give wrong info about models re: details and delivery dates.

That's a bit unfair on Hattons. They give delivery dates based on Hornby's projected delivery dates. They don't just make them up.

Fair enough, but I always ask RoS and MF also for updates and why do their's differ when compared to attons? I've always know the info given by MF and RoS to be more accurate and similar to what Hornby also tell me. It's a personal experience with Hattons that I've had and I haven't said they are bad.

  6. So this is now a 4pin DCC ready loco?

At first it was supposed to be DCC fitted, Hattons has it listed as 8pin DCC ready.

I've no issue with Hattons but I have always know them to give wrong info about models re: details and delivery dates. When it comes to the Sentinel I have always followed updates from Hornby and RoS and they seemed to be accurate.

Some work done on the sentinel shall be Denise soon p403d attachicon.gifimage.jpgattachicon.gifimage.jpgattachicon.gifimage.jpg

Looking lovely Richard, waiting to see your further updates :)

  7. If I may gently interject here, I'm with HornbyFan on this one.

If you look at the following CAD image of the recently announced Airfix New-Tool 1/48 Folland Gnat, HERE, you'll see that it shares the same "house style" as the Crosti 9F image. The major difference being the indicated colour of the plastic, pale grey for the Gnat and black with silver to indicate the black plastic and metal parts of the Crosti.

Here's a sample of some of the other CAD for more of the Airfix 2014 range:

    Blenheim Mk IVF

    Dornier Do 17Z

    Bomber Command Gift Set.

You'll see that they all share the same "look" as the 9F image. When the initial images were shown on Britmodeller, people thought that the Dornier would be a 1/48 scale kit, judging from the CAD, but it's been announced as a 1/72 one.

    Hope that helps?

    Mike. :)

Thank you so much for the added explanation M.Riddle :) Much appreciated. I tried explaining it to frobisher, I gave clear evidence that it is indeed a CG image. It's now upto him to either believe us or not. I did my part and gave what seems like solid evidence re: the coal load, greyish body (instead of black), white coupling rods instead of silvery) and floating wheels. :P

    Thanks once again.

  8. Until we have real evidence to the contrary, I disagree. If it is CG, then it is beyond Hornby's previously demonstrated ability in this area. About the only thing that is clear is that the images have taken a pass through Photoshop (or equivalent) with some mixed results.

It really isn't rocket science to judge by the looks of the images that it is a CG image. To add to that the simulated coal load, extremely whitesh connecting rods & wheels and the tender wheels hanging in the air are a complete give-away - There lies your evidence. If it was indeed a EP sample there would have been better images and the colour of the shell will be completely different. It is a well edited CG image.

You can disagree to this but I am sure by the images that it isn't a EP sample. To me the colour, coal load, connecting rods etc are a give-away and seem to be like a CG image.

If the model was like this (see image below) I would have been a little confused. If it were an EP sample it would have looked like the model below.

  9. Originally I thought Railroad was a cheap range of models for the train set market and good for those wanting cheap models for kit bashing, super detailing etc using old Lima and pre-China Hornby tooling but the range does now seem to be developing quite differently and now covers a wide spectrum from cheap(-ish) toys up to models using new tooling that are acceptable to many enthusiasts. The Mk.1 coach is much, much better than a toy, as is the DoG in both versions. I must admit I'm a little confused by it all but if the Railroad range is developing as a de-spec version of the full price range then I can see a lot of merit in the idea. On the idea of design clever, that is still finding its feet and is a bit erratic, I thought it worked remarkably well on the 2BIL, was a failure on the GWR tanks, and appears to be finding its feet with the Star and DoG. Whilst it is probably never going to be universally accepted I do believe that if done well it can work. I also believe that others including Bachmann will be following suit to some degree whether or not they announce it loudly like Hornby did. On the Crosti 9F that was a bold and commendable choice of subject by Hornby, I'll certainly be getting one.

Hornby had stated that the RailRoad range is going to witness a big change in the coming years. I think after ther re-branding in Feb we shall get to know.

  10. Maybe a bit harsh but not unwarranted. So what are we getting with this model, will it be like the DoG and if so which one , the considerably cheaper Railroad one or the main range "design clever" one. Will it have moulded handrails like the main range "star" , comes in at about same price I think. The catalogue needs to be specific, but I somehow doubt it

The CAD images shown on RMWeb and on Hornby's website was clear enough for me to understand this models features.

    - It is a RailRoad model. (I hope the livery is applied well though) :P

    - Most of the model has wire handrails except the handrail on the cabside.

    - The chassis is completely new tooling as I heard from Hornby and I think Graham Muz has also said the same.

    @Frobisher

Here is the image of the CAD and someproof that it is indeed a CAD image and not an EP sample.

The image also shows where exactly are the wire handrails and where is the moulded one.

    Hope this helps :)

  11. Hey All,

I am absolutely pathetic at Photoshop so I've used MS Paint for this. I'm not sure but I think there are only 2 well known Co-Co AC Electrics on BR (i.e. Class 89 and Class 92) So here is my take on a Co-Co AC Electric locomotive for passenger services. It is done is EWS/First ScotRail livery.

This is my first shot at something like this so please bear that in mind. :)

Thanks in advance for all likes, compliments, criticism and disagrees :P

  12.  I also have to design some etches for handrails and the distinctive cab window protective grilles, and do a sheet of decals. I've designed the cabs as separate parts so that I can fully model and detail the cab interiors, and will probably add some figures.

What will the handrails and window grills be made off? Are they going to be from shapeways of are you talking about brass etches? I need window grills myself. Hoping you can explain a little more :)

    Cheers!

  13. After butchering most of Kato Japanese fleet to fit decoders and other details I notice the multiple units use especially small central mounted motors slung very low in the underframe leaving the seating area clear (well, up to at least cushion level), would one of those smaller motors not suffice as one power car pulls around six other coupled trailers quite happily.

Then again thinking from fresh, how about a powered bogie (motor bogie mounted) with drive taken off using a propshaft to the other bogie, all you'll have is a small prop running low through the cab area and if there is weight added over the "trailing" bogie in the body it can be removed to add a speaker or whatever after?

    Just thinking aloud...........

    Oh yes......Copyright 2013........Me!!!!  :rtfm:

    :sarcastic:

One of my Mehano BO-BO diesels has a similar arrangement.

  14. Hi Dave,

In my opinion, I think you should go with a centrally mounted motor that sits below the cab window. It would be nice it it was concealed with a grey lump of plastic (something similar posted before??). The idea of a PCB in the fuel tank also seems excellent.

  15. How about some more track in OO.... something compatible with Hornby, Bachmann and PECO setrack.

Off the top of my head... an express diamond crossing, larger curve points... track with concrete sleepers
