    A New Start

As the Scalescenes free silo & creamery can be seen in the background of the last pic in the post above I’ll move on to some other bits. I’ve loved the idea of the same designer’s canal stuff, so had a bash at the lock & bridge kits. Suddenly realised I didn’t have a close up of bridge, however it’s there in the photos of the overall view of what could become a railway. Scratchbuilt the paddle winding gear on the lock from styrene, partly because it was easier than cutting out the card versions!

And there’s some interior detail too

Thought I’d change supplied canopy for one scratchbuilt from various styrene parts.

Then added an office based on the one in the free Scalescenes L/R warehouse.

Last of this set of freebies was a warehouse/transshipment shed. Chopped an extra door on one end.

Thanks both! This is just a beginning, a new layout may be in the making...

Next was a workshop. Delighted to win an eBay auction for some equipment As I couldn’t print transparencies at the time all the roof lights done with Wills corrugated clear styrene.

Thank you! Photos a bit cruel about the finish, & of course firebox door would need a giant to stoke the thing, but I was pleased!

Next up was the boilerhouse from this set. Decided to make a boiler using various types of styrene & an old tube which had held sports hydration tablets. I did all the buildings with a skeleton made of styrene profiles. The idea is that when this goes on a baseboard the buildings can be lifted off to show the interior. I’ve also been cutting out the bullseyes in the end walls & fitting scratchbuilt fans & vents.

Been a while since I’ve been around for a lot of personal reasons. Modelling went on, but only occasionally. Then when winter hit & I was locked down & even my charity shop closed was delighted to gone across some free Scalescenes kits from a magazine. Thought I’d get building again!

That roof is the Wills bike shed! Many thanks, I was really pleased with all the little bits I could add to the scratchbuilt side, some dustbins to go in next.

Building has been there from early on, Julian, it’s one of the modules of the Scalescenes medium station. I have been gradually adding to the scene, though. Sadly something seems to have gone wrong with the lighting. I fear a dodgy soldered joint inside & have no way of getting in & fixing it short of tearing up the station...

...thought so, there he is. Must be late meeting my mother off a train: He’d better not have been in the pub or he’ll be in trouble

Many thanks, Julian. Yes, MGB still thunders about the place pretty much whenever the sun’s out. There’s even a little one on the railway. Sometimes seen outside the station, sometimes on a 1-plank being taken places...

Few more from today. How I solved the staircase problem in the freebie cottage: How the @BRM cottages will fit into the overall scene, with the freeshops from another publication alongside: And finally a little find from eBay. Really wanted one when they were released, forgot, then found one in aid of a Class 37 preservation project: Rather a happy weekend in between a bit of cycling, sister visiting for weekend & the parents’ Golden Wedding photo shoot, updating the one from their Silver Wedding

That’s just brilliant! The Plastruct staircases have arrived, so can deal with that in due course. As I have ready access to the railway at the moment concentrating on buildings for the branch now. Here’s WIP on the @BRM free laser cut cottages: I’d been slowed down as my dry-brushing of the brickwork was awful. Finally gave the walls a good coat of Red-Brown Tamiya acrylic, then a swipe of Humbrol enamel dust wash. Random bricks picked out in other shades. Some touching in to do. Roofs only taped vaguely in place for photo.

Cheers, Al. Just ordered some Plastruct stairs to do the job. I’ll put the staircase running across the building with the foot by the closest window in the near wall & the head over the door on the far wall. I can then block off the “extension” from the room which will have the hearth, but leave a gap by the near wall to allow the illumination to come through. Not completely realistic, but an interesting exercise. It’s my only quibble with the otherwise lovely Scalescenes medium station. No stairs to the upper room!

Just a quick one. Metcalfe cottage which was a freebie in BRM ages ago being given a bit of an upgrade: i found the wallpaper patterns on the internet, imported them to MS Paint, resized & cut to fit. Peeling & lumpy paper for realism, obviously. May let glue Scalescenes panels to the backs of the doors. i’ve replaced the first floor with a solid bit of card (not shown) covered both sides with Scalescenes cream clapboard, which I find useful for floorboards. Am debating putting a staircase in to divide the ground floor so there aren’t two doors to the same room. Next up is building the chimney breast & furnishing. Goodness knows where it will go, but it’s a fun build!

This one. It’s a Guillows T-28 Trojan. Bought in the local Hobbycraft ages ago to amuse TSC, & also because it was reduced & looked all lonely!

Thanks, Al, & for your PM. I’ve been doing a fair bit of modelling (converting a MINI Cooper S hard-top to represent my Cooper Convertible was fun, along with a straight Cooper & a Countryman rally car) & a SR-71 Blackbird which I’m pleased with. Also started on a balsa & tissue aircraft as a project for when I’m at my own home. it’s been fun adapting figures & so on. Just another tool in the modelling box!

Have taken advantage of that a few years running, Richard! Rarely use on C&WR as I’m a member, though.

Oh, & didn’t add this one. When I build the railway they’re to be used on it will obviously be heritage day:
