That looks so much better - did you spray Exec. light grey straight on top of the Dapol "colour"? I'm guessing you removed the original lettering?

    ….

Tracking down 8+ for a Inverness/Perth train or the 7 needed for a Land Cruise rake could take some effort.

Near enough, Steven; three thinned coats of Exec Light Grey were brush painted over the top after having removed the lettering and coach numbers, then any slight overpaint onto the red lining was carefully scraped off with a cocktail stick. Transfers then applied directly onto the finish which seemed to work well without a gloss coat first.

Currently repainting a few Mk1 FO/RBR to go into a short Land Cruise rake with the sleepers - and therefore expecting Farish to announce an ICC FO in their next quarterly update…

Not sure if's a trick of the light but the red stripe appears darker on the compartment side - more like the claret that IC experimented with in the 90s.

I think you’re right, and being picky there’s also a slight bow in the stripe along the length of the body but I don’t find either are particularly noticeable at normal viewing distance.

My first sleeper is now finished - top coach in the photo - with two out-of-the-box examples below for colour comparison. The repaint is of one of the Intercity Charter/Land Cruise sleepers of the late 80s/early 90s. Precision Paints P146 Executive Light Grey below the stripe, P976 White on the roof and side handrails, P148 Yellow on the axle boxes and lifting points, Humbrol 56 Aluminium on the window frames, and the excellent Railtec Transfers for the INTERCITY, Sleeper and carriage numbers.

Images of sleeper mk3s in InterCity exec seem surprisingly hard to come by - on tinterweb at least, though I haven't reached for my stash of Platform 5s yet. What I can't figure out from that image is whether it's "InterCity Sleeper" or "Inter-City Sleeper" so if anyone has any more concrete photographic evidence then that would be useful and then I can make a new pack for everyone on the web site.

Steve, the 1988 Platform 5 stock book has a photo of SLEP 10542 in Exec livery which shows InterCity isn’t hyphenated, at least on one side of that coach. The 1989 book also has the very end of an IE coach in formation with an ICC liveried example. It’s just possible to tell that this isn’t hyphenated either.

  4. Looking good John! I’m also inclined to agree with comments about previous RTR colour saturation levels being too high, but I’m just after something that matches. Here’s my first one (top), after the window surrounds have been picked out and first wash of paint applied to the lower body. Bottom model is straight out of the box for comparison.

  5. Firstly, a big thanks to Dapol for finally producing this model - I, for one, have been pestering them for a few years so it’s great it’s finally arrived. Yes, there are a few compromises, some a little frustrating, but at least we have, in my opinion, a halfway-decent body shell to build upon.

For colour comparison, I've just taken the photo below in artificial light, showing in descending order:

    Mk1 Farish BG

Mk2C BFK (converted from Farish Mk2A using standard Phoenix Precision paints P146/7)

    Dapol Mk3 sleeper

    Dapol Mk3 TS

    Mk2F FO Farish

As I’ll need to run Mk1s and 2s together with the Mk3s - as most of us will - my sleepers will be getting a trip to the paint shop.

  6. Just found this very useful thread whilst doing some researching. Does anyone happen to have equivalent trip working diagrams for St Blazey engines for the late 80s/early 90s at all please? I've got a few WTT Section PFs for the main diagrams but, in common with the OP, am trying to find more detail about the trip workings for maximum realism. Rivercider's 1975 diagrams are a great starting point but I expect things would have changed quite a bit in the intervening 10-15 years. Tim H's comments above are very useful and any similar information in the same vein (or redirection towards other threads I might have missed) would be greatly appreciated.

  7. Great photos, I'm looking forward to seeing this again! I should be at the York show on Sunday or Monday afternoon - I'm sure I can persuade the other half to do some shopping in town - I'll stop by to say hello and have a butchers at the train turn table!

  8. Jerry,

Firstly, great to see TM in the flesh at Warley - it looked superb. Now kicking myself I didn't ask you about the off-scene turntable as Trevanion Dries (in its latest re-hash) will use something very similar, with a diameter of about 24" to feed a scenic board of 54" length. Hopefully I'll be able to make it to the Aylesbury Railex but in the meantime, any top tips, problems and solutions you came across in its construction that you'd care to share would be gratefully received!
