  1. Well that was a disaster...It seems when the gloss varnish is applied it lifts the matting compound out of the paint and dries matt. Even after 4 coats its not getting better. Perhaps Johnsons Kleer might do the trick?

  2. I just cut the wires to mine. In reality 99 out of 100 you couldn't see that a headcode was lit anyway except at night, and I dont run my layout in the dark.

  3.

Now when they come to what has always been a poor piece of tooling in the form of the V2 - a loco which is the Kristin Scott-Thomas design of the loco world - they don't retool to produce what would be a really stunning item. It's not normally something I would wish for, but Hornby! - opportunity here.

I wish to hell they had done that instead of wasting time on the B1. The Bachy V2 once you know its wrong really grates!

  4. The coloured parts were in the bag. I've decided to try and give the loco a gloss coat to match my other Heljan westerns which are all in gloss. Will Humbrol acrilic gloss varnish do the job do you think?

  5. Thanks David!

I challenge ANYONE who thinks Thompson designs were ugly or uninspiring to come and say that now with these superb models. Kudos Hornby - looks like another winner to me!

They are BUTT ugly.compared to Robinsons beautiful original design, and mores to the point they were no improvement either like most of Thompsons meddlings.

  6. There was a shipment a few years back where the factory glued black valences onto the models, an error they caught before delivery. More than one livery in the shipment had this issue. The correctly coloured parts that matched the body were included in the box, but you had to remove the black valences yourself, since the factory left these glued in place.

Are the black valences already glued to the model? Check under the foam in the box, hopefully you have just overlooked the body coloured spares...

I'll take a look later. I'm sure they will be as the model has never been run and all the detail bits are still bagged. You've cheered me up no end!

  7. I've just bought a model of D1015 Western Champion in baby pooh brown, but the front part of the valance where the foot steps are is painted black. I've looked on ebay history and it seems some are black, some are body coloured. Which is correct?

  8. Well D605, if you were working on these locos day in day out you should already be well aware of the what's coursing through those wires above your head and shouldn't need reminding!

Yes but the signs were put on locos to warn of the dangers. Just because they are there all the time with an electric loco is no reason to leave them off. I think MaxStafford answered the question best, theres no need to get aloft, plus theres no steps or anyway of getting up there.

  9. What struck me as a little odd was theres no OHE warning flashes on the model, then I looked at pictures of the real things in that era, and they don't have any too. Why was that? I thought everything had them after about 1961.

  10. You really just need to tear it down and give it a good work over, see how the motor runs once you have the gear towers sorted. I didn't care for the motor in my copy, it was noisy...

Its running very well now, goes quite fast, but boy is it noisy! I noticed when I was rebuilding that the motor is very coggy indeed. Is it only a 3 pole?

  11. I have also heard and seen for myself certain problems with the latest batch ie bodys not fitting and noisy motors rattleing around camshafts.

    richard.

From what I can tell, its the worm drives being very loose in the bogie towers that are thrashing around, and this gives the impression that the driveshafts are distorted. If you read the thread I stared about 6 axled Heljan locos I posted on there how I cured it.

  12. I've just been given a Ribble livery 17. It runs, but slowly. Now if I do what some on here have done and make the gear towers very free running, do you think the original motor will be ok?

  13. I have just received my maroon Heljan Western only to discover that the body doesn't fit properly onto the chassis. On one side the two clips on the base of the body don't fit onto the two recesses leaving a gap between the body and chassis. Has anyone else experienced this? The chassis appears to be fouled inside the roof preventing the it from sliding cimpletely into the body. This was the case before fitting a DCC chip so that is not the cause (as with other Heljan locos).

Try turning it round. Mine was on the wrong way round when I got it.

  14. And the blue/grey 'porthole' coach.

Yeah I was wondering about that. Its not a P3 LMS coach is it? Or were some Thompson ones like that? ( I really don't know me passenger stock!!!)

  15. Post #468

I believe the Swindon Museum will offering D1000 in delivery desert sand.

    Thankyou ;)

160 notes is a bit beyond me mind you...pity!

  16. I would think the castings cost pennies (OK cents) to make; trouble is getting a slot on the production line as you say. If Hornby were really really eager to please they'd have some chassis blocks machined up from solid metal in the UK. Now that would be expensive.

Emm bespoke billet machined stainless steel chassis. You'd run it with no lid on! LOL

  17. Because Hornby don't make models themselves anymore its not possiable to do a run of anything that isn't scheduled to be made. When the next class 31 run is scheduled they will make another run of replacement chassis. I expect they are quite expensive to make so you can understand Hornby been cautious in the numbers they comission. The last run obviously wasn't anywhere big enough.
