    Evening all

Has anyone successfully converted one of the new tooling 20s to EM or P4 yet?

    Tia

I've done a pair to EM using Ultrascale wheels. Gibson wheels would be fine also (I'm doing a new tooling 47 with Gibson wheels having done one with Ultrascale.

I've reused the existing bearings and gears (the Ultrascale wheels are intended for the older version so you don't need their bearings or gears - hence Gibson wheels make more sense). I've used 2mm ID, 0.5 mm thick brass washers with the Ultrascale wheels also, having reduced the plastic boss.

The bogie frames (particularly the brake rod detail) need thinning as well.

I have the same lighting problem with a 37001 version....headcode lights and tail lights don't appear to work. Switches as recommended, brightness experiments next.....

The lights do work, but were so dim as to be invisible in daylight, and only obvious in near darkness. They’ll be tweaked, slightly.

Chap I had in Poland which I posted about earlier with the same problem was finally solved, seems the decoder wasn't sitting correctly, one side was catching on the plugs, maybe you have a similar problem

I had the decoder out and carefully refitted it when I first ran the loco whilst trouble shooting the start up sound problem. In that case an email to Accurascale brought a quick response with a fix, before I’d seen on here that others had the same problem.
At some point the body will be off for crew to be fitted and I’ll look into the lights problem further then. Curious it isn’t just mine though.

I also recently owned Accurascale's D6704 loco. I got it working on the DCC layout and controlling it via the NCE Power Cab. It runs on OK layout, the sound is very good. However, the lighting functions as per the accompanying instructions do not work? Meanwhile for model 37402 Stephen Middlemore, I also use almost the same functions, cabin light, headlight... works well

  5. The picture below shows the 05.04SO empty Banbury-Old Oak newspaper van running as 3A19 on 28 May 1988 (running 14 minutes early, hence the picture quality). This, I seem to remember, had a layover at Oxford before continuing later with additional vans picked up at Oxford (the loaded train ran Paddington-Banbury via High Wycombe with the single GUV).

The loco is 50 035 but was sometimes a Class 31. 3V19, as per Martin Loader's picture,  would seem to be more correct given it was an inter-regional train.

Martin has a second picture of 3V19 here: http://www.hondawanderer.com/31123_Didcot_North_Junction_1986.htm

Is it possible to use the print dialogue to convert the Templot templates to PDFs?

It is possible to produce a .pdf of the entire Templot layout, and open it with Adobe reader in the hope of being able to use the poster function to split the file into individual sheets…..but the Adobe poster function appears not to be supported at the moment either!  Nevertheless individual point templates could be produced.

Hopefully  there will be a fix eventually.

    Thanks for the suggestion,

    Ian

Edit: See “Printing” here (I’ve no idea what it means but that is apparently the reason for the problem): https://developer.apple.com/documentation/macos-release-notes/macos-14-release-notes

Hi, we are sorry to hear that you are having problems with your HAA hopper. We have a rake of 36 of these that we take to various shows and locations for promotional purposes which we get out and put into their boxes each time and none have lost any of their parts yet. I would suggest that you have been unfortunate. If you would like a replacement hopper please drop us a line and we would be happy to help.

    Regards

    Cav

Thank you for your offer but it will be fine, just needs a little bit of work to put the bits back on. Some were in the box on arrival incidentally.

Nevertheless it is a good model of the prototype and looks the part, as I mentioned.

    Many thanks,

    Ian

    Detailing

Accurascale have made more use of separately fitted parts, whereas Cavalex have used moulded detail in a few places (such as pipes along the chassis), albeit it's been well executed.

It seems Cavalex have in fact used a number of separately fitted parts as the wagon I have (bought singly recently - Accurascale only sell in 3s, and I only needed one, a "green carded" stray) is slowly dismantling itself, and I'll soon end up with a kit. It really is green carded at the moment.

5 of the 8 spring dampers have so far dropped off, the most recent disappearing as I turned the wagon over to start running some glue in amongst the various parts still attached, and is proving elusive. Whatever glue was used in manufacture doesn't seem particularly effective (quite apart from items being applied at all angles, but at least they're easily removed for straightening).

Overall however it does look the part, or will do when I've put it back together, but buying 3 Accurascales and selling 2 might have saved some hassle. On the other hand I'll have the pleasure of doing some proper modelling, making a new spring damper, and having all the bits pointing in the right direction. And I'll give it a tidy it up with the file. Lucky I don't have 45!

Yes, from Prince's Risborough to Aynho Junction, with a passing loop at Bicester. In the early 80s it was diagrammed for a 50, I think. At least, it was a 50 most of the times I saw the evening (northbound) train. I used to walk home from school, then cycle to a spot overlooking Wycombe North Yard to see it.

    Jim

There was a 17.42 Paddington-New St via High Wycombe in the early 80s. Presumably this was the train later cut back to only run as far as Banbury. The weekday Banbury newspaper train in the 80s was normally a class 50 and 1xGUV which ran via High Wycombe also (returned to Oak Oak via Oxford).

The picture shows a diversion however; 50 005 on the 08.50 Paddington-Glasgow/Edinburgh passing Ardley, diverted via High Wycombe as the line was closed between Didcot and Oxford for engineering work, 3rd December 1983.

  10. Banbury, 27th April 1985 (Kodachrome 64, early on a dull Saturday morning).

58 025+another [58 026] failed on an empty MGR from Didcot, propelled into Banbury by a Class 31 hauled parcels. 58 023 standing on the up goods to assist the failures.

Edit: Just checked RCTS "Railway Observer", Vol 55, P 324 (July 1985 edition), available FOC online on their website:

"On 26th (April) 47578 worked the 15.01 New Street-Newcastle. Next day a northbound m.g.r. train had super power behind 58026+58023+58025 noted passing Saltley."

Their Observer was mistaken, 58023 having rescued failed 25/26.

I don't know what the parcels was; Redhill-Manchester perhaps?

  11. Ruston 33/40.

About 10 years ago I built an IP Engineering "Larger Scale" kit for a 20hp Ruston, actually 1/12 scale rather than 1/13.7 (7/8ths), and although a small prototype was always obviously a little large. It was built originally for 18" gauge with extended side frames, later being regauged to 2ft but retaining the frame extensions. Picture shows it working on construction of my present line.

Recently I've decided to rebuild it. I considered a 44/48 but it scales closer to a 33/40. So a new frame has been made, the original bonnet is being reused (still slightly too large) and a cab is being fitted.
