I don’t whether this helps but here is my 12ft by 3ft 6in N gauge layout. If you look carefully you will see a castle with a 10 coach train and 5+5 IET. This gives an idea of what fairly long trains look like in that sort of space.

And a view of the IET

    Superb layout,

I have been asked if my UTU prints might work in N gauge. I have no N gauge stock or track so fitting it to a chassis/modding the chassis isn’t something I can do but I would expect a similar approach to others that I e done where I used the ends of a donor chassis with coupling and bogie mounts might work. The design itself seems to work, but having a lot of trial and error on supports and orientation. First attempt of UTU1 62384:

Great to see you trying to re-scale to N Gauge. Once I saw your output it was the first question that entered my head.

    Hope they work out ok.

  3. I have seen a photograph of Caledonian Railway Station Furniture in an etch by John Boyle.

I wonder if the drawings would be available anywhere?

I know it was in 4mm but I would like to reproduce the furniture in 2mm scale.

    Any assistance welcome.

In truth, kids only form a very limited part of the model railway market these days, trains just aren't cool any more, and relatively few nowadays take an interest.

Hmm, not many kids could afford £140 for a locomotive and £35 for a coach. They have been priced out of N Gauge.

Couple of questions for any learned fellows out there might who might know the answers.  From all the pics and video clips i have seen of the Glasgow-Dundee services during the early 60's more often than not they are worked by Standard Class 5's.  Did St Rollox provide them for all the diagrams?  Dundee didn't have an allocation and it appears they kicked out there V2's and occasionally A2's for some jobs.  But were they actually booked for a St Rollox loco.  I wondered also whether the B1's allocated at Tay Bridge were ever involved?  The Dundee trains never got the interest that the Aberdeen trains managed and details are a bit sketchy.

    Thanks

It should be worth noting that the evening freight from Bell's Yard, Glasgow, "The Heilan' Flyer" was often run to Perth behind a Metrovick on layover from Condor traffic. It has been mentioned elsewhere by a Perth stalwart from personal observation.

  6. It has been a wee while since the last post on this and suffice to say that progress is being made. The general Gleneagles Station and Comrie Station track and buildings plans will be on the final layout.

Professional assistance has been acquired to build the layout with a complex hidden track layout which should accommodate a good deal of rolling stock.

The layout will be DCC and can be fully automated with the option of selective manual control.

    More to follow,

  7. As have may have been alluded before, the view depicted is in fact Gleneagles within which Gleneagles estate is located owned by the Haldane family. They did object to the hotel using the name under the LMS. Glen Devon appears on the other side of the summit of the pass.

Thank you, thats great.  I'm sure there will be plenty we can share.  The operation of the Comrie branch would make a good subject. I would have liked to have got Gleneagles in but there wasn't the room.  The UP section and DN home board will be on my layout though.

A very good source book for the Strathearn Railways is available :

Branch Lines of Strathearn: Tourists, Tatties and Trains Hardcover – 23 Jun. 2014

Also one I have not seen :

  9. Hi, I only just came across this topic. I lived local to Gleneagles in the seventies. I have researched the station for the last 15 or more years and have actually got an N Gauge layout being built which covers the station and the branch line with Comrie station included. A bit of poetic license introduces a loco facility and turntable and allows a mix of modern and pre-grouping rolling stock. I am familiar with the golf curses, the one nearest the station was "The Prince's Course" a 9 hole course later extended to 18 holes. This was just across the A9 from the station.

Fish trains from the north east passed through the station as well as a local "pick-up" goods hauled by a Drummond Caledonian Jumbo. Various experimental Railcars were used at Gleneagles also for the run to Comrie.

I have lots of other detail I can share.

    Regards

  10. So much for your OO troubles. Happily awaiting the 68 in N Gauge and assured that the 21/29 will eventually one day be produced in N also. Irrespective of the doomsayers. :onthequiet:

  11. 40 mph max over the bridge if I recall correctly. I reckon that's about 40 mm/s in T-gauge!

The bridge has a speed limit of 50 miles per hour (80 km/h) for high-speed trains and DMU's 40 miles per hour (64 km/h) for loco hauled passenger trains and 30 miles per hour (48 km/h) for freight trains.

  12. Nice map but the Birmingham to Glasgow Condor was never worked by the Metrovicks, they were confined to the Hendon to Glasgow Gushetfaulds Condor.

Has there been any documentary evidence of the D6100s working the Glasgow to Birmingham service - I have to admit I am sceptical.

from BR Database, the following was recorded as workings for D6123:

13/08/1963      Sightings   Worked the Aston - Gushetfaulds "Condor" throughout from Birmingham to Glasgow

3/08/1963              Sightings   Worked the Gushetfaulds - Aston "Condor" throughout to Birmingham

21/08/1963      Sightings   Worked the Aston - Gushetfaulds "Condor" throughout from Birmingham to Glasgow

21/08/1963      Sightings   Worked the Gushetfaulds - Aston "Condor" throughout to Birmingham

And so there appears to be evidence of these "Scottish" machines working the WCML.
