  1. Hello i need some advice. When the NRM released Butler Henderson in GCR livery i was a bit flushed and bought 2. I have been purchasing stuff to start my layout soon they are unused and when Mons was released i thought i might sell one.I have changed my mind and im gonna get 1 of them renumbered to 508 Prince of Wales .What i want to know is who is the best to carry out this work to professional standards it has to be that good. On another note could this model be made into a D10 easily as if im gonna do this i might go the whole hog as i really like The Earl of Kerry as well. Lastly when you put Butler Henderson and Mons side by side there is a lot of differance in Tender colour and handrails colour its strange but i like the subtle differances. Regrds ezza

  3. I'm going to wade in with my two pennies worth on the whole age argument.

I'm 23 and my earliest memories of the mainline railway are Anglia Railways 86's. As a result, I do indeed have a collection of Anglia liveried stock and I feel that there's an element of truth that people model what they remember.

But equally, my primary interests and subsequent collections cater for 1980's sectorisation, 1960's green/blue transition (1968-1973) and the GER in all it's Edwardian glory.

Why? Because I like them. Simple as.

Would I like to see Hornby go further down the pre-grouping route? Of course!

But equally am I happy they're doing 50033 in late NSE? Of course!

(Incidentally, having emailed Hornby, I've been assured the shade of blue will be more accurate than the photo on their website implies!)

With the modern railway lacking that element of... atmosphere... that say, BR had, is it any wonder younger modellers are happy to go with whatever takes their fancy era wise? Especially when it comes to pre-grouping. If you have no ties to an era, why wouldn't the bright colours of pre-1923 appeal?

Absolutely agree. Im youngish and i hate modern railways ,might have something to do with working on the miserable railway where new stations are a bus shelter with nothing pleasing to the eye ,with the constant smell of urine in the morning and the scourge of grafitti everywhere! In modelling pre grouping reigns for me! love railways in there zenith with the beautiful liveries and stunning architecture ,you can eat me if you think i am ever going to spend one penny on anything modern it sucks!BTW the next comment that connects your age with the era you model and holds this to mean that because you 25 you model the modern era i am gonna go mad ,There ought to be a site that caters for misery of modern era modelling, counselling might help a labotamy is what these people need so bloody depressing! There rant over .Regards E

  4. Appropriate- if it hits the shops in 2018. (Cue the tired old joke about Bachmann lead times).

That's different, but not for me sadly.  I'm Directored-out, I've got four of them of different flavours (Butler Henderson ltd edition, Mons, Somme Model Rail ltd edition and the GBL knock-off as Gerard Powys Dewhurst). so I'm out.  The J11 in GC condition on the other hand- I'd have had two or three of them.

I buy anything in GC livery Zeebrugge was unexpected ,Mons ,Butler Henderson and now this please make something for them to pull ! J11 i would have another 2 of them .I have pre ordered the ROD and 4 of the Wagons with WW1 sheeted tank and LBSCR railway H1 in umber wow thats stunning,My GC pre grouping fix has been satisfied and after buying Mons and the Birdcage coaches my pocket is suffering ,but i will pay for pre group stuff but we desparately need something to pull .Scenecraft was a dissapointment for me though.

  5. Well then you should come and join us in the pre-grouping section, we don't bite and you can learn a lot. 2 years ago I never even though I could build a kit, I am currently scratch building an SE&CR O1!! (Hopefully Hornby won't announce one of them!!)

Think ive done it ,thanks mate!

  6. As someone who hopes he can be called as a "younger" modeller. (I'm under 30 so I hope that counts!!) I have to agree. I have no interest in modelling what I remember from my youth, Aquafresh belongs on my toothbrush, not my layout!! :jester: :jester:

I model the pre-grouping era, as I have always had an interest in Victorian / Edwardian history, and let's be honest, they had the best liveries!!

    Gary

Here Here 100% agree . Strange that younger modellers are expressing a preferance for pre grouping era and liveries.I think Bachmann are realising this .I too love the edwardian era and have loved the thought of having a layout ,but in the past they were too toy like for me (not any more) .And , when Bachmann made the GC buildings in scenecraft that was me hooked .I model GC but will buy anything (almost ) pre grouping as well .SECR Birdcage and Mons D11 were my latest purchases. Anyone who makes any GC rolling stock Barnum and others i am in for at least 20 to complete my collection .Now the RTR are superb and ERA 2 is getting popular im in for the long run!

  7. I rather suspect that having been starved for so long, we would.

On the wider issue of pre-grouping liveries there may be a touch of the demographics starting to kick in here. The popular theory goes that modellers prefer to replicate what they knew and loved in their youth, hence the dominance of British Railways steam , giving way to transition, and to green and to blue diesel. It follows therefore that sooner rather than later, its going to be a lot less significant in terms of the market place. I don't believe that interest in steam will die out. far from it, but I do think that interest will be a lot more wide-ranging and keener to look at older railways

. Quite agree I am a younger modeller and I don't remember BR steam and really loathe anything in BR black and really don't care which emblem it has on for goodness sake. However, my passion in the hobby is pre grouping why model the railways in there decline model them in there most glorious zenith.just a thought.

  8. Hornby seem to concentrate on groups of models. The GE section has B12, D16, J15, B17 plus B1, K1, L1, O1. They have started on the NE section with the Q6, plus the LNER standard types. About time therefore they followed up with a J27 or B16/1 or G5. What I would really like however is a GC A5, although Bachmann seem to have adopted the GC.

Totally agree on A5 in GC livery top of my wishlist.
