  1. Thanks again 25kV. What a tragic incident! Presumably the apple green livery was thought to be a satisfactory compromise given other safety measures were in place.
  2. Many, many thanks 25kV. Does Mr Hatcher's book refer to the white livery as being applied for staff safety reasons?
  3. Hello. Does anyone know how long the white livery lasted for? I assume it was applied for staff safety purposes given that the approach of the locos was difficult to hear amongst all the racket!
  4. Many thanks Jeremy. Very helpful - may I quote you as a source or would you prefer to remain anonymous?
  5. Many, many thanks for the info Perthbox. The 3 month membership will do the trick!
  6. Thank you so much for all this info. Jeremy. Much appreciated, May I use some of the content towards a caption to appear against the photo in the British Railways Illustrated magazine?
  7. Sorry about the missing 'P'. This sort of stuff isn't of my era I'm afraid so I posted the image without checking. Very lax. Does no-one have the build date, how many were built and what their distribution on BR was? From somewhere I dredged a scrap date of July 1987 but I can't verify it. Any straws gratefully clutched......... Thanks very much.
  8. Thanks Wheatley and Wickham. Photographs of these beasts in action with info seem very scarce. Hopefully something might give from the Shildon link which I'll pursue.
  9. Hello all again. The same sort of question I posted yesterday for the Matisa I'm now adding for the L&T vehicle seen at Lowestoft at an unknown date - i.e. when built, service whereabouts and ultimate demise etc, etc. Any straws thrown my way would be greatly appreciated. Nick.
  10. Hello. I've attached a shot of one of the above photographed at Clapham Junction in 1952. If possible I'd like to know a bit more about these machines and their existence on BR at this time and how long they survived. I have basic info on this type of machine (70hp, Leyland powered etc) but nothing on how many there were at the time and where they were based. Any info very gratefully received. Nick.
  11. Thanks very much pH. One or both will probably turn up at an auction at some point and sell for £nnnnnnnnnnnnnn.
  12. Hello all. Does anyone know of the whereabouts of the above nameplates? Although the plates were still carried after a works visit to Darlington lasting from January until March 1962, at some date afterwards (probably prior to its July ’63 move from Heaton to Aberdeen Ferryhill) they were removed. An enquiry to the Green Howard’s regimental museum at Richmond revealed that the plates are not in their possession (although they would dearly like one of them at least!) so it is assumed they are currently owned by a private collector or even at York. Nick.
  13. This really is delving into the annuls of the arcane! Thanks very much gents. I like the Tennyson source, but one wonders which was used by the SR PR Dept. back in the 1920's when it was decided to name the new locos? Perhaps it was an amalgam where everyone in the department put their choice in a suggestion box.
  14. Fascinating and often hilarious stuff. Thanks very much. I like the 'Sir Florence' suggestion as a misspelt possibility. Btw. All the records state the nameplate was 'Valence' not 'Valance'
