  1. A break from laying track and working on the magnorail and for me electrics which I hate with a passion I took on a Scale Model Scenery Barn, this still needs weathering and I've also spent time building more Wills and Ratio platforms and station buildings, again these will need weathering also, but a good start.

The barn was built then wrapped in Slaters Pastikard rather than using the kits wraps that are provided, for me this looks far better.

The station platforms comfortable holds this 5 coach mk1 rake with a class 25, ignore the track work underneath the platforms are resting on the fiddle yard for now till I get the next baseboard built.

  2. A regular question we get asked during the Warley show is how to make baseboards for model railways, luckily I've managed to spend a lot of time with club member Ian Carter and he shared a few tips.

Use good quality Birch Plywood purchased and cut by a timber merchant, this enables you to build strong square baseboards.

Pin and glue the ply together using butt joints, but hammer the pins in on an angle almost like dovetails, this reduces the risk of the pins pulling out.

I've used these L shaped brackets to strengthen the corners, screwed in on angle, the large hole was drilled out to enable nuts and bolts to join the baseboards together.

For baseboard alignment I used these metal dowels from Station Road Baseboards, however DCC Concepts now sell alignment dowels that can be used to carry power from board to board. This is something we would consider for future projects.

    So what did we use

    9mm Birch Plywood frames

    4mm Birch Plywood tops

    6mm Birch Plywood trackbed

    No More Nails Glue

    L shaped angle brackets

    Station Road Baseboards Alignment Dowels

We will add further build images as we get on with this new layout

  3. Looking good Terry, that track looks far better now it's been weathered round the concrete bridge, let me know if you find any mk1 buffet open second or firsts, never seem to get hold of them, can only get brakes at decent cost Andy
