  1. What sort of meter did you use to measure the output? DCC is what is known as a high frequency square wave AC power source. An ordinary voltmeter won't give you an accurate reading even if you have it on AC. If it was set to DC, then it may read zero because of the high frequncy change of polarity.

If you bought it new recently from a retailer in the UK, then send it back to them and ask for it to be replaced as it is faulty.

Ah, a very good point about the meter settings! Changing to AC measure seems to work and outputs ~17v as expected.

Edit: It seems there was an issue with the decoder. It all functions well now! Thank you for your help!

  2. Hello,

Thank you for your reply. I've measured the output from the command station and it shows as none. I turned it on again and now the whole controller seems to display strange values and move the throttle and loco address on it's own!

It would seem the system was broken out of the box. Is there any place I can have it repaired? Quite disappointed considering how expensive it is.

  3. Hello,

I've recentry tried to set up my DCC system. I haven't done a layout before and I just hooked up my Dynamis Ultima to a single piece of PECO track with one loco on it (DCC Fitted). The loco is brand new with a new decoder.

I don't seem to get any power on the track but there are no errors shown on the controller. There's definitely power going in the command station (~17V) and the receiver shows constant green light. Can you give me any tips or suggestions as to what is happening?

    Thank you!

  4. I intend to buy at least two of these (037, 042) and then maybe wait for other liveries (freightconnection pack would be very tempting). I am quite certain I'm not preordering at least for a few months to come.

If Bachmann judge viability of the model by preorders alone I'd say they'd lose quite a few bucks from me.

  5. I'd say they will probably just remove the skirt by default and you can add it if you wish. I usually add buffer details to the driver side and the coupler on the other.

I'm more interested how they'll tackle the problem with the bogie springs. The Heljan 86's ones look incredibly fake so I hope Bachmann will add real springs.

  6. Bachmann duplicating the Class 86, 87, 90 or 92 will always be a financial risk because they would know the current models could be released again before their new one reached the shops and so soak up some or all of the pent up demand. Could Bachmann keep production a secret until release, to try and avoid that?

A preserved Class 87 in BR blue heading a railtour out of Paddington on the newly electrified GWML might tempt me if a new 87 model was produced.

Seriously doubt any of the Hornby's models can compete with a new one.

  7. Next electric will be the 88 from Dapol in my opinion (keep in mind this is actually an electro-diesel so you don't really need catenary).

    From here:

David Haarhaus at Bachmann Europe said:

Actually the answer is very simple. The factories do not produce products in any alternating fashion, steam era, Diesel era, steam era.

We have to add the relatively small quantity of club models onto our main production runs to enable them to come to market. With a new tooling, it is easier to plan a limited edition for the club as we have a clearer idea of when the R&D function is complete, and when production will take place. Therefore, normally we always try to produce a club model on the new tooling. There has not been a great deal of suitable new Modern Image tooling recently. Blue Pullman, 10001 do not really lend themselves. Class 40, Blue or Green? We took a gamble on the 85, and by and large it paid off.

  8. The 66 isn't really up to standard - it's not anywhere near as good as the Bachmann one. Neither is the 47 (either of their toolings), or the Deltic. Plus all of the AC electrics are very dated.

Yes, I forgot they produce a 66. But since Heljan recently accounted a H0 version (may be a rescale is on the way?) and Bachmann already have a nice OO version I doubt Hornby will bother.

When it comes to the ACs.. well, this is what I was referring to in the last sentence. ;)

  9. What I find intetesting is that Hornby were sniffing around this.i wonder if the wheelbase and bogie centres already matched an existing model such as their class 67?

Might have been easy to lop an 68 body onto a modified 67 or whatevers chassis.

At least we know Hornby are or were fishing to bring out a brand new modern loco.maybe now they will retool one of their own old models instead......

The class 67 has metal chassis and it is different from the 68s so it isn't usable. I think Hornby genuinely wanted to make a brand new model. When it comes to retooling they already have all their modern diesels up to standard (expect 59) so I doubt there will be a retool.

We also know very well what else modern needs retooling and we also know this won't happen by Hornby.

  10. This might be the only modern image thing I want to buy.....

If you like this one you will probably want to check out the 88 as well.

Strangely Dapol are yet to announce the model officially. Perhaps the release date is a part of the deal with DRS?

  11. In OO gauge:

    Locomotives:

    E2001

    Class 87,90,92

    EMUs:

    Class 374 Siemens Velaro

    Class 375/377 Bombardier Electrostar

    Class 380 Siemens Desiro

    Class 444 Siemens Desiro

    Class 700 Siemens Desiro City

    Wagons:

    MK3, MK4 coaches

New Drax Power Station Biomass wagons

    Thanks for looking.

  12. After Heljan messed up the 86 so badly I doubt the next 86 will be anything less than the 85 accuracy wise. Corner cuts clearly do not work with this one.

  13. What's all this doom and gloom about electrics? Why doesn't the rest of Europe have this issue? How come much more narrow range machines an the continent can make profit while an 86/87/90 can't?
