King class mocked up as 6030 ‘King Charles III’

If the GWR naming convention was followed, it would be 6027 named King Charles III.

This is due to 6029 King Stephen being renamed King Edward VIII in 1936; then 6028 King Henry II being renamed King George VI in 1937.

If we accept that Queen Elizabeth II would not and did not be named on a King; then the next inline to renaming would have been 6027 King Richard I.

I am at last in receipt of a Dapol Mogul (Thank you to Derails for sending a second one and DPD for 24Hr service)

What's the betting that Royal Mail finds and delivers your original one tomorrow?

Seems that you have received terrific service from Derails though.

  3. This may be a really daft question, but I'll ask it anyhow ...

If Bachmann are viewing Hatton's as a manufacturer, and therefore as a competitor, and thus refusing to have them as a seller of their products; could Hornby and Heljan and Dapol all do the same such that Hattons just end up as a manufacturer/wholesaler as they would then have nothing much to sell in their shop as all the other manufacturer's would also view Hatton's as a competitor?

  4. Seem like Morley have upgraded their Vector to a Zero Three version.  It seems that these are same/similar price and have a centre-off knob.

I think I'll be getting a MORLEY Vector Zero Three Crawler when the wallet allows it.  I think they look much better than the Gaugemaster ones.

Thanks for the suggestions, gentlemen. The only thing against that Coronation is the price!

A Midland Compound (Number 1000) is a little more affordable and quite iconic if you would like a tender engine; or as adb98008 suggests, a 2-6-4T if you would prefer a tank.

  6. This reminds me of when my wife ventured into the model railway room and admired all my GWR steam locomotives standing proudly in front of the engine shed.

What does GWR mean she asked?  Why are they all green she inquired innocently?  Why don't you get a nice red one?

She hasn't been allowed back since.

But if I ever had to choose a red one, I think I'd secretly go for a streamlined Princess Coronation.

  7. Morley have just brought out a Vector Zero Two Crawler.  I assume that this is to refine the slow speed control.

    Anyone got one?  Any good?

I am thinking or replacing my H&M Duette with something a bit more modern; and this seems to fit the bill with hand-held untis and slow speed control.

  8. On four cylinder GWR locos much of the problem was not just the width but the position of the cylinders, and their basically flat sides. On the two cylinder types the widest point was lower down

    ...

This side effect of the "Modern Railway" has meant many modern multiple units built since the days of BR have actually had to be built slightly smaller than previously.

    71000

    I found this all fascinating.

  9. Regarding the "King James I" R3331 - am I missing something, is there a reason no-one is buying this particular model? Did Hornby over-estimate demand, is everyone 'Kinged out'?

At £70 it seems rude not to get one - in these times of more expensive models it is almost the cheapest new large model you can buy - apart from the Railroad A1s.

Perhaps Hornby flooded the market to kill off the opposition - the hattons king.

And it is a bargain, along with the Bristolian set.

  10. Thanks Rob. However, the CPL transfers are the regular Yellow/Red/Black decals, i'm wanting Yellow/Red only. See the difference between the two in these images. I am not that certain that the Yellow/Red/Black transfers will suit a black loco, even if the black will be invisible against the black loco, as Fox Transfers claim. See what you think - recent re-liveries using the respective Fox Transfers:

    CoY

Just a thought, but as the lettering was applied to the prototype by transfers (as in this video of them being applied to 4041 in 1913: at 4m30s - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nc04ic2ELAQ); were the prototype lettering transfers in yellow/red/black on the black locos - and the black on black was invisible, especially under the grime.

Applying the yellow/red/black transfers to your black model may replicate exactly what actually happened?

  11. It seems to me that there is a problem with the pickups on the 14xx pointing down and contacting the back of the flange at the bottom.

When the loco (or any rolling stock) passes through pointwork,  doesn't the inner face of the flange contact the check rail to guide the stock through the point?  One side or the other depending on it being a left or right handed point.

Therefore each time the loco goes through a point,  all the outside of pickups on one side or the other will rub along the check rail. However well they may be  adjusted to start with,  they aren't likely to last like that too long.  Or am I missing something here?

I have attached a couple of images that show the over-length pick-up wipers and that the rear driver is a tad too high on the track.

Indeed mine initially fouled on point check-rails (see post #1) but I solved that by easing out the rear trailing wheels (see post #4) but post #30 seems to have a far better solution.

Mine can pull 3 hawksworth coaches (it wheel-spins on 6); but is quite happy darting about with its auto-coach.

  12.  is a little tight through my Peco Streamline Code 100 points so I will check the back-back when I have more time.

This indeed was caused by the back-back being a tad too close on the rear trailing wheels.  This was exacerbated by the pick-up wipers being at rail level such that the engine gets stuck at the check rails on most turnouts.  I eased out the rear wheels and now runs much better.

  13. have they put a dcc socket in it?

There is a large weight that the fills the boiler and the motor is in the firebox.

There is room for a DCC chip in the cab but no socket that I recall seeing.
