Prototype for everything corner.
rab replied to jonny777's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
I'm sure there are many other definitions, but here are two picked at random: Tunnel: an artificial underground passage, especially one built through a hill or under a building, road, or river. Bridge: a structure carrying a road, path, railway, etc. across a river, road, or other obstacle. -
Anyone got an easy way of fitting Peco bogie coaches on the track?
rab replied to Sweep's topic in Narrow Gauge Modelling
One of he best (and cheapest) investments I've made. My only problem is I keep losing mine, but that's no different from screwdrivers, pencils etc. -
Having just read that the Warley show at the NEC is no more, and with the news earlier in the week about Hattons closing, I can't help but wonder if the third bit of "big news" will be that Gostude is to cease trading on Ebay. :)

WCRC - the ongoing battle with ORR.
rab replied to 6990WitherslackHall's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
I guess WCRC should consider themselves fortunate that it's a leap year, meaning they have an extra day to complete the work. :) -
End of Warley National Show - but now it's not the end of a show at the NEC.

I only managed to get to Warley once, in 2022, (tis a long trek from darkest Devon), so am glad I've been able to tick that one off my bucket list. I really enjoyed it, and, as others have said, I was amazed that a group of volunteers was able to organise something on such a large scale. Would agree with what has already been said about how the announcement has been made, "going out on a high", which they truly deserve -
Fusion 360 is a good system but I'm not sure I would recommend it for a beginner/newbie. I have used other 2D & 3D CAD previously, including AutoCAD but didn't find Fusion 360 that easy to pick up

Okehampton station footbridge roof blown off
rab replied to Kris's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
From what I remember the argument went something like buses/coaches stop at bus/coach stations not road stations, so trains must stop at a train station not a railway station. (Oh dear, have I just opened the worm can lid again) :( -
While I agree with you on this point, I can't help wondering how many people felt the same looking at Barry scrapyard. Building new fireboxes, casting new cylinders, nah, you got to be joking!! But look what's been achieved. So, restoring failed hardware, unsupported software. A lot of the work that's been done on preserved railways is down to retired railway employees sharing their years of acquired knowledge and skill There is a new generation of techies heading towards retirement now, who knows where their acquired knowledge and will be put to use.

Not sure I agree there. I spent a very enjoyable day on a local preserved railway last week. I had "plain old rides on a plain old train" for a reasonable price Extras for the 2+2 where there if wanted. I would suggest what is pushing prices up in preserved railways is running costs, (fuel etc) and wages.

"Cut in half every time a train comes through". Road traffic has to wait, why can't pedestrians?
-
This thread should help to ensure that is the case. The more madness that is highlighted, the easier it is to avoid it.

Diverging a bit (shock, horror), I've just finished wiring up my Kato turnouts, (30 of 'em) and i used 16mm x 16mm trunking fixed to the edge of the board. Where the wires reach the edge of the board, I cut a notch in the lower side of the trunking, and fed the wire in through. When the cover strip is fitted to the trunking, the notches aren't visible. The wires do have to be tied though, or they tend to get in the way when trying to snap the cover on.

I totally agree with you but I guess the weak part in that statement is how do you define "personal stuff". Yes it means stuff you have but no longer want/need, but anything you buy becomes your personal stuff. I could buy a loco on eBay one week, and sell it the next week making a profit, but I bought it, so therefore it was mine, albeit only for a few days

On-train wifi at risk
rab replied to Oldddudders's topic in UK Prototype Discussions (not questions!)
I can't help feeling a slight sense of deja vu here. About sixty years ago I remember people saying that British Railways seemed to be deliberately driving people away by removing apparently well used services. Then they called in some guy called Beeching, who recommended closing lines because they weren't being used. -
Or is it another case of the the few spoiling it for the rest???
-
Is that why it's described as OO DCC Gauge. I didn't realise DCC affected the gauge. You learn something new every day. :)

I think your reference to "being overtaken by events" is important in a situation like this. You can plan as much as you like, you can consult and discuss with no end of experts, but the outcome will only be as good as the information and knowledge available at the time. Very often, when listening to someone ranting about "wrong"decisions that were made 50 or so years ago, I am reminded that hindsight is a wonderful thing. Without wanting to take this thread off in an alternative direction in my opinion the Beeching plan is an example of this. Decisions were made based on the situation at the time. Yes if those decision makers knew then what we know now, the outcome might have been very different. (Of course if the outcome of Beeching had been different, there might not be preserved railways today, and we wouldn't be having this discussion)!

It's a weekend with a bank holiday following. Isn' t this the usual time for the forum to throw a wobbly??? :)

Station Name Board - Raised White Lettering on Black Background
rab replied to rab's topic in Scenery, Structures & Transport
Thanks for all the responses. It sounds like for the period I'm looking at, I could probably get away with either raised white on black, or cream on brown. White on black wold be an advantage for me as I only have an electrostatic monochrome printer. -
I am (very) loosely modelling part of my layout on Plymouth Station around 1960. Would the station name boards still have been raised white lettering on a black background. If so what was the font used on these? If not, I'm assuming they would have been steel signs, but what colour lettering and font, and what colour background?

Just struck me that this thread title is a bit of a contradiction: FS usually causes a lot of "commotion", rarely is there "low-commotion" about it :) :)
