On the topic of QC - Hattons have added at least 10 A3 R3439 Woolwinder in LNER Gloss finish in their pre-owned listings in the past two days.

Looks like a bad batch as they all have a marks on the boiler.

Edit: spelling error & NOT BEING ABLE TO SPELL THE NAME OF THE LOCO

Does anybody ever buy these Hatton's seconds? You only save a few pounds off a new one.

  2. When fitting a TTS decoder to my P2, I found the loco a bit restrictive.

I extended the 4 pin socket into the tender and put the decoder and speaker there.

  3. This is my favourite Locomotive type, and I was totally caught out by this announcement.

I have five of the present incarnation, but will be definitely adding at least one these.

Pleased to see a tts decoder is being released.

That's how to do it, Bachmann. Where's my long overdue V2?

  4. I have had mine on pre-order with Rails for £141 for ages.

By time it comes out it will probably be £500, allowing for inflation.

I am not impressed, whatever their excuses.

I bought the the previous incarnation, which needed redoing, but this seems to be going on forever.

There are plenty of Hornby locos to buy instead.

  5. Hi

You could try one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20x30-Bass-Speaker-Compact-Fits-Inside-Most-Bachmann-Diesels-DCC-Sound-Reflex/253470999735

or one of these Zimo LS26X20X08-1W from here http://www.youchoos.co.uk/Index-Shop.php?L1=Speakers

The second one will be louder than the first but the first will have more bass

    Paul

Will the first one fit under the latest Bachmann Class 37 fan assembly? The second one doesn't.

  6. R8249 and TTS both have a motor limit of 500mA constant with a slightly higher peak value shared by the functions.

So it would be risky fitting the TTS decoder?

I have refitted the R8249 and ordered a Bachmann Class 47 to use the TTS decoder.

I hope that works out ok.

  7. Just a word of warning if you intend to use these on Heljan locos. I tried chipping a Class 47 and the current draw fried the chip. No problems so far with Bachmann 37's and 47's

I have the Heljan Class 47 'North Star' 4794.

I fitted the TTS decoder, and, after a circuit the sound started to distort.

Taken off the track for a short time restored it to normal, but then it repeated the process.

Is this a sign of overload, or just another faulty decoder. My Hornby Elite also had trouble reading the CVs.

Is this a sign of overloading. I would hate to fit a new chip and damage it. A bit expensive.

It has been happily running on a standard R8249 decoder for years.

I have just measured the current values.

Heljan Class 47 shunting speed 0.24A       Full on wheel slipping 0.6A  attempted stall failed, could get enough grip on rails.

The loco never went faster than shunt when trying out decoder sounds.

  8. Any gap when looking from above is going to be hard to see. Look at it from side on on and you’ll see straight through it.

I would have to view with my nose on the baseboard to notice the small gap. I think the flanged wheels go some way to compensate.

  9. Thanks Charlie Have now tried this on a loco that I had managed to re-programme. It didn't work. Getting fed up with Hornby now. 50% of the decoders I have bought look like they are faulty. I shall look forward to meeting somebody from Hornby tomorrow at the Electric Train Show. And wait their explanation. I couldn't even unscrew the HST body either to get that decoder out. The screws just seemed to spin and not actually undo.

    And what did they say?

  10. What sort of rating sugar cube is suitable for use with the decoders? I've had a quick look and got lost in various Ohms and such, the most common being 8 I think. TTS for me is probably exactly what it's intended to be, an entry level into digital sound so I'm not really clued up on what I can use with what yet!

I'm sure I've read of people also using iPhone speakers to good effect, would that be a good solution for the space starved perchance?

    Cheers

    J

I use the YouChoos Flame 12  but there is a good choice.

  11. I have just subscribed for 13 issues of the digital version. Great value.

As I am more used to buying hard copies, I was worried about the read quality. No problems, even on my phone, using the pinch and zoom features, the experience is great.

    Recommend it to anybody.

  12. Thanks for your inputs.

I should go by the above photograph, and move the ashpan to the right hand side.

I can't figure Brassmaster out. What is this detailing kit, and how do you buy it?

  13. This photo of a similar loco shows the ashpan lever on the right hand side.

This lever makes the Hornby one look rather overscale.

This image, posted earlier, shows the reversing rod on the left hand side, but is not too clear about the ashpan lever,

  15. I have just bought one of these, used off ebay. The seller seems to have quite a few for sale, so its history puzzles me a bit.

The running plate looks pretty straight to me, being far better than the picture on the box.

However the cranked metal piece  fitted under the cab was loose, and the other metal piece under the running plate was missing,

Looking through the above, and looking at my old LNER Flying Scotsmen, I am confused as to where they go. Can someone advise me, as I have a feeling the older locos differed from the later ones.

  16. "Mazakgate" strikes again !!!!!

At least Hornby Customer Services do the decent think and attempt to repair of replace models or offer a voucher in lieu. Excellent service I think, considering some of these products are 10yrs old or more and well out of the guarantee period.

When I recently queried this with Hornby concerning my Evening Star, I found them less than helpful.

  17. I recently purchased the Minoru. Although I have three others, Brown Jack, Coronach and Flying Scotsman 62 weathered, I didn't notice the 'ski slope' issue on the Minoru until I read this thread.

It is not obvious to the eye, but easily shows up if you line up the front buffers with a carriage. As this issue does not affect my other A3s, does it mean all future A3s will be affected?

You know, sometimes ignorance is bliss.

ps. the weathered loco above looks awful.

I'm having my Coronach weathered by Grimy Times, which will be much more realistic
