    And what DCC control system?

I have seen locos (not Hattons 66) misbehave with one system, but not with another.

    For the OP aquilla.

Rather than tinker with CVs - there is the autotune using the facility on the ESU decoder.

It's in the ESU manual under "Automatic calibration of the motor"

I tried the auto tune...no joy.   As for my control system, it's a nce powercab

Mine runs fine at slow speeds & if this was a common issue, it would have generated a lot of discussion by now...but it hasn't.

It seems therefore that he problem is either with your example or decoder/compatibility rather than loco related.

This raises the question: what decoder is fitted?

Esu v5 . ...One with legoman sound 2 with Jamie goodman,  all run jerky.  My 6 bachmans with Esu v5s and various sound files including factory fitted are super smooth

  3. Can anyone give me some pointers on how to get the Hatton 66s  to run at a crawl and stop being jerky.  They all have vs sound, but at speed steps 1 to 10 are jerky. My Bachmann ones are perfectly fine out of the box. My layout is a depot layout, so slow speed is required. I have tinkered with some of the motor control cvs on one, but to no avail. The locos are well run in on a rolling road. Ta in advance

Mine is a sound fitted, I think the sound files are a lot better now. The start and stopping distances are quite lengthy. As you say slow running is very good. Bachmann have done a good job on these.

Certainly have, my hattons ones are now shelf exhibits lol.  I fitted the esu file which is very good along with a boom box speaker from rails exclusive, my others have Jamie goodman with megabass.  Both combinations have the correct sounds for the 66, the nice high pitch tone, which the em2 just doesn't give,  I think someone demonstrated the esu file recently somewhere on here. But I can get my 66s to crawl at a snails pace without any jerky movements.

  5. I got the db cargo 66117 no noise issue, but it was a nightmare over insulfrog points at slow speed, it's fitted with sound, the esu file and would stall and the sound would cut off as soon as it hit the frog. I fitted a stay alive and now it's fine, very good slow running from step 1 to 10, will crawl along. I've ordered another cargo with factory sound, but will change the speaker to a megabass .  Plus I will renumber it.

  6. It's a shame hattons didn't do the latest db cargo red livery, now Bachmann have released theirs. I don't know if Hatton will ever be releasing any more in the future, but the db was a missed loco. Would also be nice to see the newer lighting as seen on many 66s with all 4 lights, the Hatton lights don't seem bright white enough on certain models.

All I did was to place a small flat blade screwdriver behind the pickup and eek it outwards gently bit by bit until it contacted the wheel better. No great force is needed.

I've installed a stay alive from dcc concepts and this has cured the issue.

I had this issue, I just splayed out the pickups. One bogie was barely picking up at all, once I'd splayed out the pickups, it ran beautifully.

I also took the opportunity to give the pickups and wheels a clean, despite it being a new loco.

Yep, found there was an issue with mainly the centre wheel pick ups.  What is the best method of splaying them, seeing they seem to be naturally sprung. I've fitted a stay alive in the new one and that's improved it no end, will get some more in new year.

    Hi All,

    Numpty alert....

I've recently taken delivery of one of the latest sound fitted Bachmann 66's. Lovely model and very pleased with it (well with how it looks and sounds anyway!) I've put on the track to test and although the sound fires up when flicking through the functions, I cant get the loco to actually move. What am I doing wrong?

For info the loco as supplied is on address 3.

The controller I'm using to test it is the fairly basic EZ Command Control centre (so naturally the loco's chip has more functions available than the controller does)

Grateful for any help received, having a serious brain fart it would appear!

    Chris

My db one runs like a bag of nails over insulfrog points, it stalls, shorts, lights flicker when passing over the frog. I've today replaced 2 points with electrofrogs and they are much improved, can get it to crawl on speed step 1 over them. I've also ordered a stay alive to see if that helps with my remaining insulfrogs,  don't fancy ripping them all out. My older 66s are generally fine. I have 3 Hattons 66s and they are very jerky at anything upto speed step 10, whereby the Bachmann 66s are silky smooth.  I use an nce power cab.  Might be worth checking the pick ups as I noticed on my new one the centre wheel pick ups weren't touching the wheels. Also noticed whilst on the rolling road if I lifted one end of the loco off the rollers, it stopped running. It also wouldn't run unless it had all the rollers under each axle, take one out, loco stops, bit strange for all wheel pick up.

  10. Hi. I have a brand new Bachmann 66 in the db cargo livery. I've fitted it with a v5 loksound decoder. It's been fully ran in in both directions on a rolling road. When on the layout, bearing in mind mine is a depot layout and requires slow speed operation, it tends to often stall or a short occurs on points. My trackwork is all peco code 100. As the leading wheels hit the frog, it will often cut the sound and stop, sometimes the leading wheels will pass over the frog and it the rear wheels that cause it to stop. Sometimes, when it has cut out, if I touch the bogie or body, it will start to move again, though I have to reset the sound. It doesn't do it on specific points all the time, can be random.  If I move the loco at a higher speed, I can see the lights flicker as it passes over the point frogs. It will go over the point blades fine, it's more to do with the frog and it also seems to happen more in one direction than the other. My previous purchase of 2 Bachmann 66s seem more tolerant.  The layout is fairly new build,  with all new track. I also have a few Dapol 68s and Hatton 66s all of which have no issues over the points. I've checked to see that the pickups are all touching the wheel backs. ...If even tried the old nail varnish trick on the frogs, but it still stalls.....anyny help would be appreciated

This looks good, but the main headlight colour is still too warm.

They do a replacement for the Bachmann 66 too, which allows the lighting options including the 4 white lower lights to be illuminated.  Maybe the can do that for the Hatton 66 as many are receiving the new light clusters.

But that is because the EM2 points downwards...

Yes, I removed mine, the bass was totally not what a 66 is like. The sound needs to escape, with the Hatton model as it stands it's trapped in the loco. I've got a Jamie goodman file in both a hattons 66 and Bachmann,  and the Bachmann is far more realistic, nice high pitched whine that the 66 has. Both are fitted with megabass speakers. I've tried the speaker in both orientations in the hattons. My plan is to drill a number of small 1.5mm holes under the roof grill as per Bachmann and see what happens.

The sound on Hattons 66 is the best rtr from any manufacturer on the British market as far as I’m concerned.

Recently Bachmann has produced great models of the 158/159/121/117 but the speakers are weak.

Sound file is good, in my humble opinion the em2 is the wrong speaker, way to bassy.  I've a mix of megabass and a boombox on mine and they have a much more quality sound. I also note the Hatton loco doesn't have slots to allow the sound to escape upwards, in essence,  there's a solid baffle in the way. On the Bachmann 66,sound can freely emit with minimal obstruction due to the slots in the top radiator . I'm tempted to cut some slots into the radiator on the Hatton model to see what difference it makes.

Everything crossed I won't need them Rob! Like to think minor snags I'd fix myself - unless it wobbles like a drunk duck.

Got one today, got the body off easily...but gently.then added stronger adhesive over the detailing parts on the body shell. Chipped tested, body wobbles as predicted,  so removed and cut back the axle box shafts, glued back in place and now steady as a rock.

The free ESU soundfile downloaded from their website.

Sounds pretty good, had a look on the esu website at ìt, apart from the bits in Germany,  it's better than some of the UK based sound providers. Unfortunately I don't possess the esu programmer to do it.

  16. I have a number of 170 units..00 gauge from Bachmann and as it seems that we are not getting a retooled version for some time, I thought I would try and get my original ones going again.

When I first got them, I fitted dcc decoders by hard wiring as they were not designed with dcc sockets.

I used to run them with the Hornby elite and they worked fine.. I now use an nce powercab and when I came to reprogram them, they all gave a....short circuit detected...error.

The nce will let me continue programming..The at the next stage it gives....cannot read c.v .error, so basically I can't program them

I use a separate program track...which is all ok as I tested another loco which has a dcc socket decoder and all ok

It seems that there maybe an issue with either the decoders...All 4 of them...or compatibility issue with the hard wiring or motor and the nce unit.

    Any advice welcome.

There's no design error, the circuit board works as specified. i.e rear cab light is for train manager's use, can be on or off whether travelling or not.

As Charlie says, this is controlled by the additional components on the PCB, no decoder can overcome this without changes to the PCB, so it's a specification decision that we probably have to live with. I would have liked to have the driver's cab light available and separately controlled too, but the specification prevents this, even though a decent decoder could have managed this quite easily on its own.

But this is not the cause of aquilla's problem. The instructions give details of the Function Outputs which operate the described features. These are not the Key numbers on your handset (Function Keys) but numbers of the physical connections to the decoder. These are not necessarily the same number as the Function Outputs, so some of them are, coincidentally, the same and some are not. The  instructions to which you refer could be clearer in this respect.

To match the actual lighting features to the F keys you wish to operate them will, it seems, require some remapping.

Not a problem to solve this if we know which decoder you have installed. If it's a Bachmann or ZIMO I can help, if it's some other brand, someone else will probably oblige.

For DCC running, all dip switches should be left in the 'on' position (as delivered). The 'off' position is for turning lights off when on DC.

    Best regards,

    Paul

Cheers for that and I would agree that Bachmann should of given the function keys numbers as there will probably be quite a few out there who would assume the same as I did.

I have the Bachmann plux 22 decoder and use the nce powercab.  I'm now quite used to the function numbers doing what they do, only 6 to remember, so all is well.

    Cheers guys.

  18. I'm building a small terminating branch line station, which is current day era. What I'm looking for in the world of 3rd printing, as I haven't a clue about it, are a few items often found on modern stations.  Firstly...The small standard platform shelters..often made of aluminium and perspex, these are found across the UK in various forms. Secondly,  the self service ticket machines that now again are commonplace across the UK.

As many modellers model upto date layouts, things like modern station furniture could be a nice line for someone to take up.

Do the Cab Light work at the Front end???   Charlie

If you mean the internal cab lights...They operate on the rear car when travelling forwards. .which I believe is correct as it would be the train managers end who can have the cab light on

The motors do make a slight whirring when they start but they're not noisy.

In terms of your function buttons that's quite interesting to read as the leaflet does not detail F2 braking function (which the Bachmann Decoder leaflet does) so Directional Lights End B (on/off) is actually F3 and so on. With F6 Day / Night actually F7.

Mine are a bit scrambled as well compared to the Bachmann instructions and I've got the Bachmann plux 22 decoder in it

  21. Hi guys   I have just purchased a new 158 and standard plux 22 non sound decoder all fitted and duly ran in.

Now according to the supplied instructions the functions show f0  as lights..which function correctly. ..f1 directional lights off end a....correct...f2 directional lights off b end...correct....f3 pass compartment lights...incorrect..operates rear cab light ...f4 cab lights leading end..incorrect..operates passenger compartment lights...f5 door interlock lights...incorrect. .does nothing and f6. .directional light mode day/night..incorrect..operates door interlock lights. The instructions don't say how the dip switches should be set for dcc..but they are all in the on position.   Is there something wrong here.  Ta for any advice

Having read the article...I adjusted the motor control cvs 51 and 52 as described and now my 66s will start at speed step 1 at a really slow crawl...It was very jerky before and I had to wind the speed step to 5 to get it to move...albeit jerky.  I use an nce power cab.
