  1. Connoisseur 4F Tender Cab I finally finished off a Connoisseur 4F kit that I've had in a half-competed state for - ahem - a couple of years. I fancied customising the standard kit a bit so settled on building an example with a tender cab, like this: These back boards were added where inclement weather was regular and served to provide a bit of protection for the crew. I'll be numbering mine as 44277, a Skipton loco in 1962. Here are a few pics of the finished item and the tender cab which I scratch-built out of brass sheet:
  2. I finally re-uploaded all the missing photos!
  3. I'd only compromise the build in ways which didn't affect its performance or appearance on normal radius curves. A little extra side-play should be OK and can always be removed with extra washers if necessary.
  4. I should have made it clear that I'm talking about 4 foot RADIUS, not diameter. Apologies for being ambiguous.
  5. What's the chance that a 9F will go round a 4 foot radius curve? Caveats: - DJH 9F kit (unbuilt) so things like axle sideplay, pony clearance etc. can be adjusted to suit - Test track only, so if some items of rolling stock don't go though, fine - Test track only, so no propelling of stock - O gauge finescale using Peco bullhead track I have a 10 foot square room and I'm thinking of running a single-line test track round the walls (maybe with a passing loop accessed through Peco medium radius (6 foot radius) turnouts). I want to keep the curves to 4 foot to minimise the real estate taken up by each corner. Thoughts?
  6. All pictures now reinstated.
  7. Updates I can't believe it's been over two years since I posted to this thread! I haven't abandoned Offerston Quay and indeed some things have moved forwards (slightly and slowly). I've just finished going back over all the previous posts and re-adding all the missing pictures. Please enjoy if you haven't seen them before!
  8. I always loved this scene. The stone building in particular was the inspiration for the office building on my layout.
  9. Hi Ken, It looks like you're doing the usual thing of lightly springing the centre axles, but is the leading axle compensated with a central pivot? I'm about to start a DJH 9F and trying to decide the best way to do compensation/springing/whatever ... Duncan
  10. Has anyone got the instructions for a Branchlines O-16.5 Model 'T' Ford Railcar kit BL.7 or BL.10? I obtained a couple of unstarted kits from ebay but they came without instructions. Although quite simple, it would be good to have the official instructions to hand if anyone can send or scan them for me. Happy to cover all costs of course! Thanks, Duncan
  11. Hi Trevor, I'm following this with interest. I got a factory-sound Class 122 from Rails of Sheffield just before Xmas. I have also found that the synchronisation between revs and speed is not very good. When coasting to a halt, the revs can play at full tilt until just before the railcar stops, when the brake squeal sounds and the engine reverts to tickover. You can just about hear it here: I suspect that this sound file contains only two types of engine sounds - revving up or tickover, but not coasting. I've tried to make it play the tickover sound when speed is reduced by one step but it ignores the CV changes I tried. I also miss the brake key found on all @pauliebanger sound files. F7 plays the brake sound but doesn't affect the speed. The manual refers cryptically to this feature working if 'RealDrive' is activated but makes no further mention of what this is. In hindsight I'd have installed a decoder with Paul Chetter sound file myself. Please do post any findings!
  12. Crane A couple of videos of the painted and weathered crane in action. Here's the handheld control box. One switch for left/right, one for hook up/down. Couldn't be much simpler: I'll have to find a suitable crane operator now.
  13. Many thanks for the kind words Paul. I hope to be able to spend some more time away from work and playing trains modelling.
  14. Cheers Mark! The crane is currently drying in the airing cupboard prior to being painted, but I'll try to remember to take more photos when it comes out.
  15. Crane Wow. It's been a year since I posted on this thread. I haven't been idle, although it's a close thing due to work and other distractions. I've recently been playing about with the idea of motorising the ubiquitous Peco LK-735 yard crane: I'm not talking about radio control here, just some switches on the end of a wire, which directly control motors in the crane. I used a tiny 3V 58RPM gear motor from ebay to operate the crank handle, replacing its axle. The other gears are as per the kit, except that the big gear axle was replaced with some 2mm brass rod for strength. The whole crane rotates on a 12V 3RPM motor mounted under the plinth. I think it's the sort of motor that turns the turntable in a microwave. The motor spindle forms one path for the electrickery to reach the crank motor, and a slip ring under the crane provides the return path. This means that the whole crane can rotate freely and can also be simply lifted off its base, leaving only the sturdy rotation motor spindle protruding. For even more safety, the whole plinth can be unplugged from below and removed. A very large, very ragged hole under the plinth gives clearance for the motor body: Here's a quick video of the crane in operation on Offerston Quay, before being painted or detailed: Since the jib doesn't raise or lower, there's an inevitable compromise on what bits of track it can access. It can reach both wagons in the video and the quayside setts to either side. If a barge was moored, it will just about reach that as well :-) I'll post some more details here when I've made some more progress!
  16. I saw them in Rails today! My sound version isn't in yet but the ones in the glass case looked good.
  17. Ever Given is on the move: https://www.vesselfinder.com/?imo=9811000
  18. The other distraction on my time is the fact that the middle 5 panels of my 9-panel 12in:1ft fence blew down last week :-( So I'm also playing with concrete and fence-posts.
