  1. The Nestle factory here made a product called MILO , a chocolate malted drink which came in granular form & is still available .

My Dad used to load out of the Depot when he worked for Robsons Border Transport in the  60's & we had many free samples .

  2. A friend of mine who is sadly no longer with us worked as a fireman then passed fireman out of Saltley depot  over the S&C to Carlisle , he said it was the longest freight turn in the country with the same crew.

David transfered from Carlisle Kingmoor to Saltley as promotion up to driving was faster , loco's he mentioned were Crab , Black 5 & 9F of which the mechanical stoker fitted ones had a habit of running short of coal , he said that loco would be serviced at Durranhill shed even though it was closed before the next turn down south .

  3. A Huge Crane is now on site ready for lifting ,it looks to be placed on the site of the old British Fuels coal depot where my Dad used to work in the 70's on the thing he called the Ostrich, I hope it's  still standing in the morning as it's rather windy up here .

I came across this 1912 track plan of the area this evening , it covers Durranhill sidings to Petteril Bridge junction -

P.S My place of work is behind Petteril Terrace near the site of the old turntable .

  4. As it's gone a bit quiet , here's a few pic's taken 55 years ago from the Cumbrian Railways Association Library of the scene of the accident .

    .

    1) Petteril Bridge junction Signal Box  Aug 67 - B&Q is now on the site of the buildings to the right of the Box , the railings lead up to the start of the Bridge .  https://cumbrianrailways.zenfolio.com/p434662995/h27610BF3#h3237b0c3

    2) Petteril Bridge junction Signal Box  Aug 67 - To the left of the box is the site of the Midland goods sheds , later BRS with the Green parcel vans , the remains of the foundations for the bridge crossing the river to the goods shed are still visible when you walk along the river bank on the north side.

Hope these are of interest , as a kid I used to sneak onto the remains of the goods yards here & at Upperby across London Road.

The Cumbrian Railways Association site is well worth a visit .

  5. The heater was marketed as a "Trueshopping" 3kW model sold by Amazon and was received as a gift.

Some heaters of this design have been reported to cause overheating issues with the supply flex/plug but mine is fine now that the plug was replaced.

Nevertheless,it is never really advisable to leave these things unattended.

A 3KW heater if used at it's higher setting should be used with a 16A power supply which means uprated wiring , sockets & plugs - https://www.rselectricalsupplies.co.uk/gewiss-iec-309-16a-switched-interlocked-socket-240v-gw66004_265?gclid=CjwKCAiA9qHhBRB2EiwA7poaeEVNkU9B9AVdlErq87q4g10GEmFfLRQBfZsI3VgYxEl6UlPFyqgw-hoCT18QAvD_BwE

  6. The building in the background in the picture is the control room for the Down yard hump which was nearer the big mound of earth to the south of BSW timber than the entrance to the wood yard , the yard masters office / Tops building was next to the North entrance to the woodyard & ballast recycling depot .

  9. I thought these pics were familiar - I have bought a number of these negs off a seller on ebay & was outbid on a few more including a Black Five at Stainton crossing .

One from the collection  -  http://www.railpictorial.com/piwigo/picture.php?/3559/category/13 & my purchase on ebay - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/60955-at-Kingmoor-Marshalling-Yard-with-mixed-goods-20-3-65-/351035908222?ssPageName=ADME%3AL%3ACOSI%3AGB%3A1123&ViewItem=&item=351035908222&nma=true&si=1FwmOwepPA%252FQXBb4kmXfP9y5ZkA%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557  - click on the pic & it should make it bigger ..

I have emailed the Paul Claxton Collection regarding the above & given him the name of the ebay seller & am waiting for a reply .

The collection that I bought came with copyright from the seller so how do I stand ?? .
