  1. Sorry wasnt specific in my last post....I appreciate the planned locos in the series....was just wondering what or if was replacing the next model initially listed as locomotion. There seems to have been a common thread this will not now appear. In previous weeks the next model has been shown on the release of the current one ...in this case the compound. Is it an omen that the series is running out of steam. If it does what will I do with my time, instead of blogging....blimey I could even take up modelling. ( not in the fashion sense that is for all those of a sensitive nature.) On the subject of modelling my urges got the better of me and have forsaken the Ivatt for now,and am applying plasticard to my donor Hornby railroad compound.body. It and the comet chassis now seem more likely to be a match made in heaven. The body already minus the raised footplate and new splashers in place. Will photo in due course when looking more like a class3 belpaire. High level gearbox now running sweetly.....really must start finishing some of these projects, instead of starting new ones.. Crickey that's another portion of modelling time spent on this infernal device.

Thanks for reminding me about the class 3 440s a couple languished at my local shed Saltley for a couple of years after nationalisation...now still got the comet compound chassis, albeit in need of new break gear. A handy mashima motor...a markits gear box I have just got to run sweetly after a number of years in my spares. Plenty of plasticard....wasn't I doing something else? Oh yes a high footplate Caprotti. This project stalled last week shredded part of the high level gears. My fault not the product, thankfully Chris at high level has replaced the gear. (Excellent products and after sales service.....usual disclaimer)I will be using this for another project. So many locos to model so little time...or funds.....now where have I left the toffee to test the new class 3 chassis?

Please find attached a cornucoppia (forgive spelling if wrong) of compounds..1157 is the Bachmann model. 1159, an early Hornby body, on later railroad chassis, comet breakgear This had been originally on a comet chassis. This had gone together very nicely but the combination of plastic body...440 wheelbase and my inabilty to weight sufficiently wouldnt pull toffee. Do I hear a murmur from those of a western persuasion..either LN or GW that neither could the real things...the crimson two need no introduction....the GBL is on plinth (1159 is now an excellent performer thanks to the new chassis.)
  7. Please keep showing progress of the models shown on this page....it was the shot of the high footplate 5 in an earlier post that confirmed my intention to produce same. My own efforts ar'nt exhibition models but I like to think they pass muster as "layout" locos to borrow a phrase. I have bought the compound and it seems to compare very well with the Bachmann NRM model I have. I keep looking at the models link to see what the next might be...usually this seems to be put on the day of release of current modell....any ideas as it seem it won't be locomotion. In respect of an earlier post smiths at Stourbridge and Merry Hill always seem to have stock.

Just reread my last post......I wish to correct myself, it is a hold your breath moment regardless of cost when you start to deface an attractive model, albeit wishing to improve or adapt it....the GBL rendition of the black5 is an attractive model in its own right. The statement about having supported the big boys is also misleading, as the recent purchase of a Heljan Garratt will show this iIs an ongoing commitment., rather than something that has ceased because of my buying this mag.
  9. These models exist (sorry to those having difficulty buying in their local shops) do we ignore them or buy them whilst they are available. I for one have supported the big boys in the hobby and thank goodness for them. One side effect however has been the demise of the small cottage industry suppliers. I have hacked expensive locos to produce something different, but it wasnt a such hold your breath moment when dremel met black 5, recently. As stated I fully appreciate the weathering mans reviews especially when accompanied by a comprehensive parts list that can both rectify and lift these models above their humble beginnings. My own view lets appreciate them whilst they are here....this blog alone has opened up a number of other topics posted by contributors which I have enjoyed and learned from.
  10. If at first you dont succeed.....give up and let someone else do it....( H Simpson). It appears ive got the hang of this now..use my mobile rather than ipad.....just for good measure included GBL coronation body renumbered etc..also Bachmann NRM compound. Will update on Black 5...as can be seen currently being butchered. The cylinders comet...with their chassis.. valve gear Hornby Duke caprotti attached to solid bar . From such a mish mash hopefuly a sawn will arise in due course....

  13. Dear all on subject of Triang class o8 many years ago and in the absence of the better models that duly arrived, I obtained a Triang body. They had obviously adapted it to fit their then standard 060 chassis. I removed the excess length over the buffer beams and married it to an impetus chassis. I repainted it BR black as class 11 12043 . It wa originally in EM and sat for many years in my to do sidings to be converted back to OO. I have worked on it recently and will attempt to photo and post in due course. On the subject of this series, like most of us I cannot ignore this source of reasonably accurate bodies. I have as stated an extensive fleet of locos mainly of my modelled area and period.....Midlands LMR 50s and 60s however will always find room for "visitors". I have the catle awaiting the parts listed by The weathering man and an intention to model as a double chimney version. A K3 A3 an 28xx are all on display. I already have 3 compounds reworked Hornby on railroad chassis two bachmanns one in MR livery, but will still buy the GBL version and the class 4 tank. Sorry to ramble will attempt to photo and post some of these reworkings in due course including the high footplate Caprotti which is bits on my workbench
  14. Il Grifone I fully appreciate Sir Williams enduring and life long love of Swindon and it's products. I am just pleased he bought his expertise over to the LMS and formed the team that produced the locos I love. I do admire the products of other companies, not least when they are modelled as John Dornam has done with his king models. On this last subject just read about King Henry's final journey from Tyeseley to Swindon.....a poignant read not least the salute from the locos on shed! Off now to test run my Caprotti chassis......comet models with high level gearbox...mashima motor....as stated photos in fue course
  15. Dear all a newcomer to this forum however have been following since beginning...my tag might give away my modelling preferences. Firstly may I say always enjoy The weathering mans reviews....so much so bought a book this afternoon about the GWR 460s. So that is where my favourite loco designer got his inspiration from....married to Tom Colemans lLanky and Yorky cabs..... One area that does not seem to have been mentioned is the use of these bodies by the P4 ...EM modellers. I used to have an extensive EM collection and used to entreat the guys at Comet models to produce more of their chassis kits....only to be informed the RTR boys (understandably) wanted to sell complete locos rather than the bodies alone. I have returned to mainstream OO and have an extensive fleet as Mr York can testify. I have so far used the streamline duchess body on a current Hornby chassis. The black5 is currently being butchered to produce the high footplate Caprotti with comet chassis...scratch cylinders and an exquisite set of Hornby duke valve gear...photos when more presentable
