    I don't think it would be possible to assemble a complete, correctly liveried, rake from the original tooled mark 4s, as Hornby never produced the TOE vehicle adjacent to the class 91 with that tooling, for example.

    You would also be able to get away with intercity liveried mk4s with the 89 in GNER livery. It did happen very briefly

    The new Mk4 tooling may well in time be re-used for different liveries. This is not as likely for the 89 because Accurascale are doing all variations of it in 1 batch, so it may be a case of buying it while you can.

    Heartily recommend keen systems bits for mk4s. I’ve done two rakes of mk4s and it’s a marked improvement. 

  2. Well, despite the many naysayers here, I enjoyed myself. Yes, there were some empty spaces but at least that allowed some breathing space where needed. The lack of seating did seem to be a problem for some but that’s an easy fix. My only bugbear was the arrival in Saturday morning. Loses of waiting around and no one j owing what to do, but that’s a venue issue and not the show’s organisers. 
     

    Excellent range of layouts, decent trade and good value show for almost Central London 👍

  3. Further work to the GC set. The filling job has been smoothed off but some minor work still needed for it to be 100%. The glazing has also been cut away where the windows were filled as well as the roof for the TSOE being cut to size. Next job will be cutting holes in the floor for the Keen couplers. Someone also will be doing the paint job as I can’t do it in my house. 
     

    Usual uploading issues when using an apple device. Deal with it.

  4. Calbourne is on the back burner for now, having been screwed over by Modelmaster. There is also a 313 and 89 in the works as time and motivation permit. 
     

    Latest project is turning some old Hornby mk4s into a Grand Central set as despite the real thing being shelved, I always found the rolling stock to be very smart. Being the old tooled coaches, the first task was to make changes to the coaches to reflect the refurbishment done by GNER c.2003. Filled windows and the DVT wifi dome. In the end, the coaches will be keen coupled as described previously in the thread.

    •  I do think the TfW FLIRTS will happen. See this still from the Greater Anglia video 
    • loco hauled mk3s from the Oxford range

     

    What I say every year and still hasn’t happened

    • regional railways and NSE mk1s 
    • eurostar centre coaches (maybe even a retool)
    • Electrostar

  6. 3d printed samples of the upcoming class 755/4 FLIRT at GETS today. Motor to be a low profile type in one driving car and most likely arriving Easter 2023 according to SK.

    (I can never seem to get photos to upload the right way up here so rotate your device/head!)

    Whilst numerous power cars were put into East Coast grey, only one rake of coaches received the livery. It probably made more commercial sense to to go with the NXEC rehash and bring it mainstream rather than as an exclusive- as it was. Perhaps in the future as well as the 91 and mk4s in the same livery?

  9. Ahem, Electrostar. Just saying!

     

    Such an obvious and glaring omission that no one seems interested in picking up even if it had PROFIT in flashing lights on the side. Works all over the south of England. 25Kv, 750v amd dual voltage versions, loads of liveries, various lengths and subtle variations available, but this is Hornby so they probably think it’s a diesel railbus (see class 91 post on social media that was quickly taken down)

  10. Oh that is poor. The blue isn’t even straight across the nose and the running number for 43006 is wrong too. I’ve always been a great supporter of Hornby it’s becoming increasingly difficult to want to spend any money on their products. If the class 91 and mk4s are like this, then it’s game over as far as I’m concerned.

  11. Ok, not entirely ECML rolling stock. I also like Isle of Wight railways. 
    Having missed out on a BR black version of Calbourne, I have started to set about converting a mainland DJ Models O2 into an IOW version. Vectis 3d printed model railways supplies the necessary parts, for not much at all. No relation, just a satisfied customer. 
    As I can’t remove the body from the chassis (despite reading everything on how to do it) great care is the order of the day, as well as studying pictures and comparing to my EFE version of Chale. 
    I’ve only got as far as fitting the extended bunker. Filling, paining and then adding the air tank, pump and pipe work to follow, eventually.

  12. For the DVT, the process is the same as the coaches, but with a few differences. 
     

    1. On the chassis, the hole for the keeper plate needs to be 7mm from the end. There are faint mould lines with will be the edges of the hole along the length. The same 23mm from the 7mm point 

     

    2. The hole is narrower than on the coaches. As a result the keeper plate needs to be reduced in width. Cut along the lines marked in red. Note- the pic shows a coach, not the DVT, but I forgot to take a picture!

     

    All other steps, as previously mentioned.

  13. 4. There is a bit of a tongue on the coupler; file down to allow free movement. 
    5. For the female attachment, I opened the holes a bit to make coupling easier. Fit to the coupler arm and add to keeper plate- ensure it can move freely.

    6. Remove original couplings from bogies and rotate 180 degrees on refitting to coach. Reassemble coach et voilà!

  14. Fitting keen couplings to Hornby mk4s:

     

    1. Goes without saying, but dismantle coach down to its component parts- very quick and easy, but the seats may need some gentle persuasion!


    2. The shaded area drawn on the underside of the coach is to be cut out. 4.5mm from the end and then 23mm from the 4.5mm point. Lots on holes drilled and gentle use of a Stanley blade. File to smoothen any rough edges.

     

    3. It’s best to file the opening on the keeper plate so that the coupling can move more freely. Fit thus. Adjust as needed and ensure plate is level and glue

    I’ve often said 313/314/315/507/508 or 317/318/455 families were ripe for a model

     100% agree with this point. How an Electrostar has never been produced is beyond me! 
     

    in addition it would be nice if the following were included in the 2022 range:

    Steam era

    • More terriers
    • More 4 and 6 wheelers (4 wheeled southern coaches in particular)
    • A4s

    Modern era 

    • Electrostar 
    • Eurostar centre cars 
    • Viva-rail D Train 
    • East coast grey 91 and mk4s
    • GNER 91 and mk4s pre refurbishment (it might also encourage the 89 by AS and Rails to become a reality)
    • Limby class 31s and 33s- I wonder if there’s much demand for just the chassis of various older models that have been upgraded with a better motor?
    • Greater Anglia FLIRT (the bi-mode one) 
    • Network rail/DRS DBSO
    • Regional Railways mk1s
    • Intercity charter mk1s

    Ambitious? Yes. Will they all happen? Probably not. Should I be optimistic? Definitely. I’m probably right somewhere here, yes?
