  1. Thanks Al,

The terrace view is in fact a coloured turn of the century view of the actual street involved (Grantham's Westgate):

so a bit too good to ignore altogether - however, I agree that it doesn't really 'work' from a perspective point of view.

It only really 'works' from a low down viewpoint...

... but that's not what an exhibition audience sees!

this also illustrates how I'm limited with what I can do with the church spire (the third tallest in England apparently!) - my backscene isn't too high so I can't position it any higher up.

Thanks for your thoughts. It'll stay as it is for the Grantham show and I'll ponder on what to do in the meantime.

Looks good to me, I lived just off Westgate in Stanton Street. Was there a garage at the Wharf Road/Westgate junction in those days? I remember it in the early 1950's as a kid!

  2. I call that place 'the valley', used to spend all day there in the Summers of 59-62! Played 'wars' in the woods watched a lot of loco's and 'flattened' pennies on the tracks!!

Happy days before electrification and high wire fences!!

  3. My Dad moved from Rochester up to Grantham with the A&B move. He was a vehicle tester and during the war they made and he tested Bren Gun carriers. I worked in the machine shop in 1972-3 when it was still a vibrant company making dumpers, graders and light rollers.

  4. You've done it now Brian! I suggested my wife looked at your shed build and she just said, "Knock the old one down and build a bigger, better shed like Brian has!" So, plans are afoot!!

(Thanks, smiled when she said bigger as my present shed is only 6x8'!)

  5. Just a quick remincense, late 1950's,my brother, 2 mates and I would buy a 2d platform ticket at Grantham and board the Nottingham train which was made up of non-corridor stock and ride to Nottingham Victoria for a day's trainspotting. Lot's of Midland loco's, Brits and diesels not seen in Grantham were watched while eating our 'sambo's' and 'pop' then 5pm back on the Grantham train and spend half an hour on the platform before giving up our 2d platform tickets and going home. Happy days, we did this for a couple of years and then DMU's replaced the old loco and carriage stock, so that was the end of that!

  6. Hi, as a newbie it's taken me most of the night to read/scan through this fascinating thread. I was born in Grantham and lived in Stanton Street (now Morrison's car park!) and only a stone's throw from the Blue Bull! I had to walk through the'tunnel' on Station Road to reach my school (Huntingtower Rd CP) so train spotting and copping and visits to the shed were regular!

I don't ever remember seeing a turntable though, was this removed prior to my childhood? I remember also standing on Springfield Road watching the loco's turning on the 'triangle'!

I am really enjoying this nostalgia trip and the high quality of your modeling the area, thank you very much and I will keep watching..

    Cheers
