Yes, and the agreement was to leave a single line in place which is why one track was lifted by 1983 whereas the other remained intact until 1986.

That explains it then, still seems a long time to keep a single line in situ that’ll never reopen again!

By 1988 the track on the ER side only went as far as Penistone Goods, there had been a plan to leave  a Speedlink siding there for Hepworth Iron Co but there was no grant funding available for it. The last few lengths of CWR came out in spring 88. 20200713_102032.jpg.78d89891ef505b6216f9716b0ff6c23e.jpg

A Peak arrived shortly afterwards with 30 Tubes for the recovered sleepers, after loading they stayed rather longer than intended after the locals helped themselves to most of the bearings !

The gent on the left is Barry Roberts, a lovely man who was very sadly killed on a relaying job at Aldwarke Jcn some time after I took this.

Fantastic image, I’ve always been fascinated by the pictures after closure of wire less gantries and trackless formations.

I've started work on the area where BR wagons are scrapped. It's mostly parts of old wagons and kit spares. There's also a skip to take wood from wooden-bodied wagons. I've seen photos of wooden wagons being set on fire at collieries to dispose of the wood but I can't imagine that sort of thing would take place so close to buildings. I'll have more wood on the ground of the cutting site.

I’ve been following this thread since it started it’s amazing how far it’s come along in such a short time, keep up the good work Ruston.

The wagon scrapping area you could have some grounded mineral wagon or van bodies, I’ve often thought of using spare Airfix mineral wagon kits on my own scrap yard layout If I ever get round to building it.

  3. Hello

I’ve been playing around with a few ideas for a small shunting plank based around a scrap yard, most scrap yards have gantry cranes or some type of crane, I’m wondered could the Dapol dockside crane be used in a scrap yard with a little modification?

    thanks

  4. Ben, I originally wanted to model the wharf as well. I thought about making two 15' layouts that could be exhibited individually but taken out together for larger shows. I bought a couple of Dapol dockside cranes as a starting point. As you will probably see in my next post, the layout gets longer anyway - I did say, "As with most all of my projects....."

I'd never thought about using the Dapol dockside crane, well I look forward to your next post Andy, have you seen the link below before plenty of prototype pics
