Try "bee_studio" on Eb** for replacement motor...

Thanks, I’ve had a look and don’t see anything obvious.

My “H” 0-4-4T (one of the first releases) was quite reluctant to move at times when first received, requiring the odd nudge into motion. I discovered by loosening slightly, the four motor top housing screws the problem went away.

I cut out and placed a thin “gasket” of paper around under the face of the motor top housing which has the effect of raising it very minutely. Clearly, as originally fitted, the top housing was fouling but this simple mod has proved most successful.

Thanks, but this isn’t the problem as the motor has exactly same problem when separated from the chassis.

I wonder  if that is the same type of motor that was fitted to the H class. I have three of them and two had to go back to Hornby as the motor was overheating, one of which damaged the loco body. I think that it was due to poor construction of the motor.

    All the best

possibly, I didn't see the part number linked to the H but it would make sense.

  4. Hi Folks,

Some time back I converted an M7 to EM Gauge, it has never run smoothly at slow speed so I put it to one side and got on with other things.

Anyway, today I stripped it down and it very much appears that the problem is the motor itself. With the motor separated from the chassis it stalls or doesn’t start at all. I’ve tried on both DC and DCC.

It looks like the motor has not been available as a spare for some time.  Does anyone know of a motor that could replace it, or does anyone have a spare?

    TIA

There doesn't seem to be much online.

I take it you have found the SREmG website,

    https://sremg.org.uk/model/4mm_lugg_vans_01.html

I would definitely recommend this. Search on eBay, second hand book sellers, etc. as they normally pop up for about £8.

    hi Jason,

I have the book but nothing useful in it I’m afraid.

    Hi Russel,

Not sure this is really what you need but it’s the Hornby model.

I know that making a model of a model is a cardinal sin here on RMWeb but, assuming Hornby’s research is correct, it shows what lettering went where…

All the photo examples of the prototype that I can find on the web are so grimy that the lettering is obscured.

    Cheers

    Thanks Darius,

    That’ll do for me!

Looking at the Side by Side maps on the NLS website, there were two locomotive turntables on the south bank of the Thames opposite Cannon Street.  Presumably the Hither Green table is one of these?

The right hand one shows up on the 1860 map and the left hand on a later map but look the same size. I guess it’s possible that one moved on.

Had a look at the details of the Hither Green TT.  It’s recorded it was originally at Cannon Street Station.  I wonder if the lattice frame was added when it was moved to Hither Green?

I read that too, but surprised if Cannon Street had a table of that size.

It goes bigger the question, why did it get designed and built like that who was going to fall in there .... if it was designed today I'd understand in today's HSE driven environment to stop toddler's falling in when their mummy's were too busy on their mobiles to notice that Tarquin had run away

    Ilfracombe wasn’t unique

I wonder if someone involved once worked for the North Eastern Railway?  The N.E.R. preferred to have the turntable pit covered over.  They insisted on the G.N.R. doing the same at Doncaster.

An alternative is, the turntable at Ilfracombe was moved from somewhere else, where it used to be a covered over example, so some bright character decided to have the handrails rotate instead?

    Paul

I don’t think these tables were ever covered over. Similar one at Hither Green, now reinstated at Robertsbridge on the RVR.

Drawings won't help much, your turntable is much bigger than the one at Ilfracombe - or any other UK one for that matter. You'll have to design it yourself.

It’s not a lot bigger but whatever happens it’ll be a DIY design.

There are photos of a S160 at the station I'm modelling during WW2, so I will be ordering one, the question will be how easy will it convert to EM gauge.

    I’m sure we’ll find a way!

Nice to see some more progress  Russell. I've just completed my goods shed for my Ilfracombe layout and earlier on in the year the signalbox too. I gave Andy over at railmodel.co.uk some drawings and he made some laser cut kits for me. If you have the space for the full size shed its available on request as well as 2 versions of the signalbox (banked per the prototype or flat bottom) if you wanted to give them a crack to help keep things moving on for you?
