suitable figures seem very hard to find

Have you looked at ModelU's range of figures?  Even at 1:76 scale, they have recognizable features, superior to white-metal cast people.

We took advantage of their scanning service to obtain figures of friends in their West Somerset Railway working outfits.

You could have Clive driving a bus over the bridge!

It would look magnificent sitting in a siding, ready to go on site. But how often do such things happen in one location?

Less often than a bus on a bridge.

Where can I buy decent salted peanuts?

    Roast your own...

    • Buy 1kg raw, shelled, peanuts
    • Create a salt solution with, say, 1 tablespoon of salt in 1L water
    • Soak the peanuts in the salt solution for about 20 minutes
    • Drain the peanuts
    • Heat your oven to about 200 degrees C
    • Put the drained peanuts in a baking tray
    • Put the tray in the oven for about 23 minutes
    • Remove and cool

the dynamo will generate enough power to be able to see safely where you're going at half that speed

If the bike electrics are 6v, then it's more likely an alternator, with a large selenium plate rectifier to convert a/c to d/c.  The alternator is good for 12v, and you can substitute the selenium rectifier for a solid-state one with less electrical loss.  A 12v supply will help improve your lighting and you can substitute LEDs for some bulbs, such as the flashers and side-lights.

Many thanks. Confirms what I suspected. Powerpoint is different. How to get round that remains a mystery at present though.

Use print to PDF, then attach the PDF here.

My computer has a 'Print to PDF' option when I choose to print a document from Office.  If that doesn't appear on your computer then there are free PDF printers available.  A PDF printer is not a physical printer, but a piece of software that converts your Office document to a PDF file.

I seem to recall the New Year's Day holiday was a relatively recent thing

1st January 1974.  I think it was chosen by Ted Heath as a reward to the electorate for choosing to enter the Common Market (now the EU).

  7. I need some brass bushes for proprietary (e.g. Hornby) loco axles.  I think they are 3mm diameter.  There are plenty of sources of 1/8" top-hat bushes, but I can't find any for 3mm axles.  High Level make hornblocks in several sizes, including 3mm, but what about plain bearings?

    Am I searching in vain?

you can make it feel even bigger if you use the wide angle of the iPhone then crop

That plays tricks with the apparent gauge of your tracks.  In your second photo, the mainline looks broad gauge with a converging standard gauge branchline.

    Little Muddle wide-angle distortion

One definition of a gentleman is someone who knows how to play the bagpipes, but doesn't.
